5Inner-city PalimpsestBuilding the City Above the City
My dissertation emerged from a fascination with the rich urban and architectural fabric of dense inner-cities, and the layered palimpsest, and strong sense of character as a result of the piecemeal evolution of the city over time.
There is a vast amount of airspace above the existing city of Cape Town which is being underutilised and underdeveloped. The dissertation explores a method of placemaking less dependent on the ground plane, and able to occupy the underutilised airspace above existing blocks and erven; densifying the city, and expanding its capacity, while maintaining the unique sense of character and rich urban fabric which is a product of generations of small steps in development.
The project is an attempt at simultaneously engaging in, and negotiating between the pragmatic ideals of city-making, and the poetic nature of a timeous and precious patchwork of urban fabric. By utilising the underutilised existing airspace in the city, the project adds residential density to the city and contributes a new public realm and public facilities which is an asset to its surroundings and neighbours.
It unlocks a new realm above the ground plane and explores the relationship between verticality and cross-programming. Lastly, its physical resolution represents and contributes to the timeous evolutionary palimpsest that is the citys urban fabric.

Edendale Primary SchoolManenberg, Cape Town
Edendale Primary School, an existing school situated in the Manenberg township of Cape Town, is one of seven small scale primary schools within the area. These schools are referred to as plaaintjie schools, and were constructed out of prefabricated units as a short term solution to the education crisis in many Western Cape townships. However, the schools have been left as is, with minimal maintenance, are being treated as a long term solution, and serve as a sad reminder of our countrys history.
In response to the problem of an increasing number of school-going children and dilapidating school buildings, the Western Cape government has begun to construct large scale primary schools in many areas in need. These schools can accommodate up to 1500 children.
Manenberg is currently one of the most notorious gang areas in the Western Cape. Gang violence, drugs and domestic abuse is sadly a part of everyday life. The headmaster of Edendale Primary School disclosed that pupils as young as 11 are becoming members of gangs and that almost all the pupils are affected by gangs in some way.
The brief of the project was to design a new primary school which could accommodate 1500 primary school pupils according to the WCED guidelines.
The site of the school is at the border of two areas of Manenberg, and on an arterial road through the township. The current school is situated on the neighbourhood side of the site, away from the arterial road.
The new school needed to achieve several things; to provide a safe and secure environment for the learners, use the school building to create an urban edge along the arterial road, and turn over unused land to the community in creating a common green which would act as a common neutral space before entering the school building.
The school building is conceived as an undulating courtyard space with the classrooms creating a perimeter block. The perimeter opens and closes to create precincts within the courtyard for different age groups. The courtyard is surveilled by the hall and dining room in the centre, and by the library at east end.

Simulated Office StudioManenberg, Cape Town
The simulated office term is a tradition in the school of architecture. For a term, groups are formed within the class and made to act as offices working on an assigned project. The aim is for the team to develop a design from concept through to construction documentation, keeping the design and construction circumstantially relevant as well as within a budget.
The architectural teams consult with similar teams of quantity surveying students and have further consultations with practising construction managers, structural engineers and architects.
The Edendale Primary School project was essentially used as a concept competition, with six designs chosen for the class to take forward. My project was chosen as one of the six, and I was assigned a team of three classmates to form our office.
Our team developed the design of the classroom modules through the use of offsite precast concrete elements and replicability, and investigated using off-the-shelf elements in innovative methods to achieve great architecture within the tight budget constraints of R50 million.

Founders Garden PrecinctForeshore, Cape Town
The Founders Garden precinct project was an urban precinct design project with the aim of designing a precinct in the foreshore of the Cape Town inner-city. The foreshore is a swathe of reclaimed land, built by the Apartheid government to extend the harbour and create a new modernism-influenced master-planned business district in Cape Town. The foreshore has an incredibly hostile pedestrian realm; course urban fabric, and daytime population swell due to it housing office space almost exclusively.
Together with a partner, we produced a series of mappings of the city at 4 different scales, and used this as a prompt as to how best to unlock the foreshore. The growth of the foreshore has stagnated considerably in recent years due to the lack of access. The elevated highways which create access to the city from the southern suburbs surround the foreshore with no access, and the land on the other side of the highway has been monopolised by PortNet and TransNet (harbour and rail companies).
The proposal starts at a macro scale, and proposes to shift the development of the harbour and unlocks the land blocking the expansion of the city to the east. This will allow the creation of new housing and mixed-use development from Woodstock in the east through the Foreshore and through to the V&A complex to the north-west.
The precinct itself is on a smaller scale, with the subdivision of the site into four smaller blocks with a varying range of public to private; wide open to more intimate spaces.

Foreshore Information ExchangeForeshore, Cape Town
As a continuation of the founders garden precinct project, the project involved selecting a site within the designed precinct and develop a project with a mixed-use programme.
The site used for the project is the block overlooking the newly established public square. The site has a huge importance in surveying the square and providing a counterpoint to the public outdoor activities taking place.
Considering the context of the precinct and the areas one dimensional programme, I decided to pursue a public building which would offer the surrounding new residential buildings public facilities and act as a new public activity hub, as well as diversify the foreshores programme.
The new building is composed of a media hub and library overlooking the public square, a retail edge along the ground floor, and apartments on either side of the library.
