DESCRIPTION

The quality of the urban space lighting elements presented here is undoubtedly synonymous with beauty, which is a direct result of the care and attention to detail implemented during the design process, a feature on which the iGuzzini company philosophy has always been based. Less evident is the fact that behind this visual quality lies a real financial advantage in terms of the amount of energy saved by using an optic which also preserves the environment, respects the health of citizens and offers increased safety for the entire urban community.

We have worked in and for “light”since 1958. This was the year whenthe Harvey Creazioni, a smallcompany that produced lamps andchandeliers, was founded. Today weare the premiere Italian manufacturerin the “Lighting” market, and werank among the top Europeanmanufacturers. We want be the creatorsof good lighting: light that shinesin a room, a house, a building, amuseum,a cathedral, a company, a plaza, anairport, and, yes . . . even an entirecity. Good lighting has to be createdwith the awareness that it has tointegrate with its environment, takingcare not to invade it, darken it, orviolate it. Light must be respected, and light has to, in turn, respect thenature of people and things.

The iGuzzini mission is therefore to study light, to know light and tomake it known; improving theintegration with architecture throughindustrial design. Because of this, alarge part of what we do is to offerconsultation on lighting techniques, both in the design phaseand as an after-sales service.

Creativity and innovation

Design

The culture of industrial design isone of the main values within theiGuzzini company philosophy. In 1991, the ADI (the Associationfor Industrial Design) recognisedthe activities of the company bypresenting it with the highesthonour in the sector, theCompasso d’Oro, “for thedevelopment of a highly coherentdesign and production philosophythroughout the years, in which theculture of Design has been botha common denominator and an element of distinction”.

The 1991 prize followed the 1989award and paved the way for the1999 award, but the motivation ofthat year effectively underlined theDesign factor as an “element ofdistinction”, drawing attention tothe precise commitment tocombining technological innovationwith aesthetic/shape-relatedresearch, which has made thecompany so recognisable againstthe current landscape.

Concept

Through its collaboration with thecompany’s own technicians andmany prestigious designers,iGuzzini has been gaininginternational recognition for years, for example the company receivedthe IF Design Award from theIndustrie Forum Design organisationin 1987, 1989, 1997 and 2006.

Special products

One of the most significantphenomena to occur in theindustrial production sector inrecent years is customisation,or the opportunity of providinga response to specific situationswith the implementation of specialproducts. An example of this situation waswhen the special Colour Woodymodel was created for theKowloon area of Hong Kong. The requirement in this case wasthe insertion of lighting fixtures inan environmental context whichwas characterised by speciallighting effects, implemented everyday at set times during the night, while maintaining the high qualityof the basic lighting provided duringthe remaining night time hours.

A high resistance to wind was alsorequested (the wind can reachspeeds of 300 km/h in thislocation), in addition to a systemfor the diffusion of sound, to beused during exhibitions and events. The flexibility guaranteed by thehigh performance levels of theimplemented technology meansthat in this case - as in many othercases - the special requests werefully satisfied by transforming thestandard solution into a uniqueand customised system.

Visual comfort

Visual comfort is considered inthe creation of lighting fixtureswhich prevent unpleasant glarefrom occurring. If, generally speaking, this is aregular measure taken toeliminate discomfort, it becomesan indispensable feature in urbanenvironments where glare alongtraffic-heavy streets can becomea real hazard for motorists andpedestrians alike.

This hazard can easily be avoidedthrough the use of lighting fixturesfitted with certain accessories, for example spill-rings, bafflesand indirect lighting systems, which offer ideal solutions forevery type of product andguarantee increased safety withoutinterfering with the aestheticfeatures of the fixture itself.

Improvedcolour rendering

Quality of Light

Through an expert use of light, the features of the space andof the architecture itself havebeen highlighted. Each lightsource was chosen afterconsideration of the specificfeatures of the different locations. If, in ancient times, people couldtalk about a ‘genius loci’ whenreferring to a particular spiritconferring a special atmosphere ona single space, we could now usethe term ‘genius lucis’ to describethe special lighting requirementsof the space, because each spacehas its own light-related needs.

For example, the mainly warmcoloured lighting from sodiumlamps may be suited to a historicalenvironment, while a halide lampwith its cold light is better suitedto a more modern architecturalsetting. The wide choice ofsolutions therefore providesimproved colour rendering andoptimises the lighting designaccording to individual cases.

Semi-cylindrical illuminance

The following 4 zones can be identifiedaccording to the distance between people in agiven area:- the “intimate” zone- the “personal” zone- the “social interaction” zone- the “public” zone. The public zone is the areainvolved in the consideration of safety withingreen spaces. In fact, the minimum distancewhich allows a person with a normal level ofvigilance to take evasive or defensive action isapproximately 4 m. Reduced distances affectthe actual performance of reactive behaviour.

Safetyfor citizens

When discussing public spaces, the light quality offered directlyconcerns the safety of the citizenswho use the space. The night-timeillumination of public spaces whicheliminates dangerous shadowyareas becomes more than a singleelement bringing peace of mind tothe people using that space.

In many cases, it provides an idealopportunity to restore run-downareas or places with dubious night-time access to the community.Good lighting can therefore keepwatch over our safety at the timeswhen we need it most.

Recanati urban lighting plan

If an Urban Development Plan isused to organise building expansionaccording to a basic design, anurban lighting plan has the taskof organising the lighting of urbanareas, acting on the desire toimprove the quality of life of thecitizens where safety is concernedon one hand and the aesthetic imageof the city at night on the other. The lighting technology solutionschosen for an urban lighting planfirstly follow the morphological andenvironmental characteristics ofeach area, while remaining awareof the individual features andhighlighting the historical andregional heritage of the area.

The plan then involves the selectionof the hardware, lighting fixturesand systems used to achieve thedefined objectives effectively, according to the specific installationgeometry in the area. Particularattention is paid to the integrationbetween the lighting system andthe pre-existing context, and howthe systemsfit alongside any urban furniturewhich is already present orwhich is due to be installed.

The main director of this plan, theprofessional responsible for theconstruction of the general plan, can utilise the skills of localtechnicians and lighting technologyexperts who are able to implementthe plan and provide a response toeven the most varied requirements. The Recanati Project in 2003 wastruly the exemplification ofall these steps.Mr Terzi, an internationally-renowned architect, in collaborationwith local technicians and the LocalServices, orchestrated an urbanlighting plan which took account ofthe historical buildings in the city.

The most important considerationof them all was the ancient wallwhich surrounds the city and leavesits imprint on the urban geometry. The company was able to collateall the requirements of the projectand provide a response using thehardware which was most suitedto the final implementation. The flexibility of the lightingfixtures, guaranteed by themultitude of solutions available, plays a determining role in makingiGuzzini a well-prepared and reliablepartner in the implementation ofany urban lighting plan.

Saving Energy

The consideration given to theenergy saving policy, environmentalimpact and the limiting of costs(and thereby taxpayers’contributions) in relation to theoptics used in public areas directlyconcerns the quality of the fixturesused in urban areas.Technological evolution in thecreation of increasingly refinedoptics which help to prevent lightfrom being wasted dependsdirectly on the quality of theproduction and frequentassessment procedures used atthe various processing stages.

The effect of this quality directlydetermines the quantity ofelements used: highly-evolvedoptics and fixtures are, in fact, capable of performing theirfunctions more efficiently, therebyincreasing the distance betweenone element and another andreducing the total number offixtures used, up to a total savingof 9 units per illuminated km(as detailed in the above table),with all the resulting benefitsin terms of electricity consumedand costs incurred.

Two optics show how a wellthought-out designcan providediametrically oppositeresults: in the firstcase, the light

beams emitted

by the lamp are

reflected by the

optic without

invading the

shadowy area of

the spill ring,

directing all the lightoutside the fixture;in the second, unsuitable designleads to theobstruction of therays emitted, whichin turn causes thefixture to becomedangerouslyoverheated. The optics are createdin anodised aluminiumso that the naturalshine of the materialremains unalteredover time.

Street optic (ST)This fixture makes it possible to implementgreater centre-to-centre distances between thepoles and therefore to reduce the number offixtures, decrease visual impact, reducepurchasing and maintenance costs, and also tosave energy.

Optical pollution

The link mankind has with the sky isof an atavistic nature. Interfering withthis relationship leads to the disruptionof the natural balance, not only forhumans, but also for plants andanimals. In the convention which tookplace in Paris in 1992, UNESCOhighlighted the enormous damagecaused to the night sky by excessiveartificial light and declared that thestarry sky was a piece of heritage tobe looked after in a responsiblemanner. Light pollution, in addition tobeing responsible for this, also causes30% of the energy supplied (dataprovided by the Dark Sky Association)for the illumination of cities to bewasted.

In order to resolve the problem, it isnot necessary to plunge the citiesinto darkness, but simply to adoptrules for the implementation oflighting using fixtures which, through concentrated andasymmetrical optics, baffle screensand fresnel lenses, are capable ofproviding light without increasingthe already high level of lightpollution. It is not sufficient simplyto use these fixtures; they mustalso be installed and maintainedcorrectly in order to guarantee aneffective limitation of lightingpollution.

11

The main effects of optical pollutionare recognisable both on a generalenvironmental level, through thealterations and mutations in thenatural development of livingspecies’ vital activities, and ineveryday experience, where glareeffects can limit and jeopardise ourmobility within cities (this is true ofboth traffic-laden and pedestrianstreets). The more private andpersonal phenomenon of intrusivelight is also an issue.

It has actually been calculatedthat excess light produced bymalfunctioning light sources notonly damages the outdoorenvironment, but penetrates privatedwellings in the form of intrusivelight, altering the circadian rhythmsof the inhabitants and seriouslyaffecting their psychological andphysical well-being.Through the implementationof fixtures which are capableof overcoming this type ofdisturbance, the battle against lightpollution (in addition to improvingthe environment, saving energy andreducing costs) is aimedat preventing the phenomenonand safeguarding health.

Quality of the optics Painting

An optic made using qualitymaterials and created usingadvanced techniques will stand thetest of time, which is a guaranteethat its performance levels will bemaintained and that the initialreliability data will remain unaltered. The quality of the optics alsoensures that maintenance work willbe performed in the quickest timepossible, thus avoiding morecomplicated and laboriousprocedures which could have adetrimental effect on the outputof the lamps.

The desire to offer high qualitystandards means that liquid paintis more likely to be selected, ratherthan powder application. Liquid paintis undoubtedly more expensive, but it offers decidedly superiorperformance efficiency: it is morecompact, more uniform andprovides greater resistance to badweather and ultraviolet rays. The safety certification of the fixturesis demonstrated by the allocation ofvarious seals, such as the CE brandand ENEC approval. In contrast with the former seal, which is obtained as a result of thecompany's self-certification process,ENEC approval is assigned by thirdparties only after close examinationinvolving a strict series of checksbased on the relevant EuropeanRegulations (EN), through a QualityAssessment System which conformsto RegulationsUNI EN ISO 9002.

Maintenance safety

The insertion of elements suchas the switch and fuses betweenoperating parts, although notcompulsory according to currentlegislation, is a guarantee of simpleand rapid maintenance andprovides further assuranceof the safety of the fixtures.

Consequently, the lighting plansmust take account of the smallestdetails of each individual situation, highlighting artistic heritage, creating charming atmosphereswhich are capable of inspiringemotion, and guaranteeing thesafety offered by the light itselfthrough the avoidance of thedangers which may lurk in darkareas.

Lighting implementation within atown/city centre is much morethan a simple functional lightingrequirement: it gives a new andunusual appearance to the city, which is completely different fromthe familiar daytime perspective.

The safety of the systems, theattention to detail evident in thedesign of the fixtures and thesheer number of solutions on offerfacilitate the achievement of eachobjective identified in the lightingimplementation design process

In this way, respect for the existingstructures has been combined withtechnological innovation and anoptimal centre-to centre distancebetween fixtures has beenachieved, thus creating a uniformlight, avoiding the introduction ofunsuitable poles and alsopreventing intrusive light fromfiltering into private residences. Thelighting of the square involvedaccenting the architectural detailsof historical structures such as thefountain, this time using all theoptic options offered byMaxiWoody. In order to limit thenumber of poles used and to avoiddirect glare without departing fromthe functional illumination ofpedestrian areas, MultiWoody wasused. This enabled several fixturesto be installed easily on a singlesupport.

Town/city centres

When formulating a design for thePlaza Costitución in Malaga, it wasimpossible to ignore its links withexisting historical features. ViaLarios, for example, the streetleading to the square, contains aseries of historical fixtures whichhave strong connotations in thecollective memory of the citizens;the intention was to create a senseof harmony between this featureand the contemporary technologyapplied in the design.A solution was identified using theceiling-mounted Platea positionedunderneath the eaves, witha blade-of-light effect optic anda source providing white light.

In the Viale Marconi park in Como, the main objective was to give anew lease of life to an area in thecity which is seldom used at night. This was balanced with the desireto enhance the lighting with a well-designed selection and to highlightthe structure at the end of thepark.

The most efficient response tothese requirements was theimplementation of the Nuvolasystem, winner of the Compassod’Oro prize for design which wasawarded to the company and to thedesigner Renzo Piano. This systemis used to create a uniform yetaesthetically pleasing andfunctional light both horizontallyand vertically, highlighting theVolta Temple at the end of the parkwhile avoiding the risk of glare.

The network of roads whichcomprise the thoroughfare trafficcirculation is one of the mostdelicate and important parts in thelife of a city.Illumination becomes anindispensable element whichit is not possible to do without. It is more important than everbefore that the choice of fixturesplaced along the thoroughfares isnot the result of distractedconsideration. The fixtures must besuited to the requirements of thesituation and safety is the primaryconcern.

As a result, the issue of lightpollution, the quality of the optics, and the possibility of a correctillumination which does not wasteprecious light in this case areelements which become morefundamental than ever for thedesigners and for the inhabitants ofthe city who use the road network.

To celebrate the centenary of theMetro (the underground system inParis), nine of the stations wererefurbished and social themesimplemented, the work beingentrusted to internationally-renowned planners and designers. The Villejuif station was allocated tothe architect Mario Cucinella who, together with iGuzzini, orchestrateda design around the theme ofsport. The lighting selectionsinvolve warm lighting for theplatforms, in order to guarantee apleasant and comfortableatmosphere for the passengers, and a colder lighting used toilluminate the graphics of varioussporting images displayed on thewalls and on the ceiling.

Platea fixtures were chosen for thelight directed towards the platformand Woody fixtures for the lightdirected at the walls and theceiling. The fixtures are arrangedin groups of four and mounted onmetal supports, where emergencylights and loudspeakers are alsolocated.

A large area like the areas usuallyused for city transport servicescould become an urban emptyplace at night without a suitableillumination system. This can be overcome easily withthe implementation of a special andcarefully considered project whichis capable of highlighting andemphasising the presence of theselarge and fundamental spaceswithin the fabric of the city, because light can breathe life intothe largest of spaces, whiledarkness or bad lighting turns it intoa useless - if not dangerous - void.

The Milan Fair in Rho-Pero,designed by Massimiliano Fuksasand officially opened in March2005, is centred inside a largearchitectural ‘rippling sail’, which isone and a half kilometres long. Two paths branch out under the‘sail’: one at zero altitude for guestswishing to visit the eight pavilions(the height of which varies between7 and 10 - 12 metres); the other isat an altitude of six metres andleads to the bar, the meeting roomand other function rooms.

During the day, the completetransparency of the structureallows natural light to penetrateand illuminate the area, while atnight a simple yet effective designdevised by Fuksas in partnershipwith iGuzzini provides the lighting. In the pavilion zone the Laviniasystem was used and street opticsattached, both for 400W directlighting and 250W indirect lighting,in order to guarantee an averageof 300 lux on the ground.

The altimetric progress of the sailis particularly winding, withvariations ranging between zeroand 10 - 12 metres and consistingof continuous peaks and troughs.A double-arm Lavinia system wasused here, in the same colour asthe roof so as to guarantee theuniformity of the assembly. An asymmetrical flood optic wasfitted to this fixture with 250Wmetal halogen light sources.Platea 250W fixtures withasymmetrical optics were usedto complete the outdoor design.

When light is applied to animportant architectural structure,it becomes a way of interpretingthe beautyand history of the structure itself.Fixtures which are capable ofemphasising buildings, highlightingthe interplay between ‘full’ and‘empty’ used in the construction, fixtures with personality which arealso discreet, in the hands of adesigner become preciousinstruments which can be usedto discover a special way ofexperiencing the historical memoryof a city and its treasures.

The magnificent Cathedral in SaintPetersburg and the areaencompassing the buildings infront of it, presented an interestingchallenge when planning thelighting scheme. Its Russian-Byzantine style, characterisedby the exquisite onion-shapeddome, imposing bell tower and avariety of spires, required carefullydesigned illumination in order toemphasise the richness of theelements without disrupting thebalance between the different partsof the architectural structure.

The dramatic sculpted effects ofthe elements were highlightedusing superspot versions ofMaxiWoody projectors and Plateaprojectors with flood optics, carefully positioned on the roof instrategic positions so as to obtainthe desired theatrical effect; Radiusfixtures were used to illuminate therailings. The inside of the bell towerwas illuminated using Radiusfixtures with luminous fluxvariance, thereby achieving adynamic effect aimed atemphasising the vertical buildingwhich is such an important symbolof the historical memory of thecity.

The finishing touches wereprovided by MaxiWoody fixtureswith refractor optics, which weremounted on poles or positioned onthe roofs of the buildings along theGriboedov canal and used toproject the elliptical beams of lightilluminating the building facades.

The quality of the urban space lightingelements presented here isundoubtedly synonymous with beauty, which is a direct result of the care andattention to detail implemented duringthe design process, a feature on whichthe iGuzzini company philosophy hasalways been based.Less evident is the fact that behind thisvisual quality lies a real financialadvantage in terms of the amount ofenergy saved by using an optic whichalso preserves the environment, respects the health of citizens and offersincreased safety for the entire urbancommunity.Correct optic design is, in fact, the mainreason for the financial and energy-related savings achieved: an optimalluminous flux emission can beobtained, which means the numberof fixtures used can be limited to onlythose which are absolutely necessary. As a result the distance betweenfixtures is increased, therebyovercoming the more serious effectsof environmental light pollution and theharm caused to individuals by intrusivelight entering their homes. This lightingquality is also a guarantee against glare, which is always the cause ofinconvenience in pedestrian areas andcan become an actual hazard on roadsor in areas with heavy traffic.Safety during maintenance proceduresand in the management of the systemsis assured through various awards,in the form of approvals from thirdparties such as the prestigious ENECorganisation. The usual wide range of options offeredand the extreme flexibility of theseoptions have enabled real productcustomisation based on even the mostunusual requirements and features. Each product becomes a rare andprecious tool in the hands of thedesigner as he prepares to design alighting plan for any urban landscape, modern or ancient, in any geographicalconditions or climate.
