THE

Happy Spring to our awesome SOSC members! April is one of my favorite months as the cherry blossoms surrounding the Mall in DC usher in Spring. As one strolls through the gorgeous blossom-lined walking paths, it's so nice to pause and appreciate their wonder. April is also National Volunteer Recognition Month, which too is a time to pause and appreciate things of wonder; that being the incredible outreach the talents of our volunteers produce.

No one will say it doesn't feel good to be on the receiving end of a gift, a kind gesture or a helping hand. However, there are experiences in life that demonstrate that it really is better to give than to receive. Volunteering is one of those experiences. "When you volunteer you feel good about yourself, you feel stronger about yourself, you feel better about your abilities, and you get a sense of accomplishment" says Bill McGinly, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Association for

Healthcare Philanthropy. "Knowing you are contributing to the community increases our sense of well-being. It makes us feel happy" says McGinly. "And it helps us appreciate some of the smaller things in life and how important they are to us - things that we may take for granted".

The SOSC’s extensive list of Volunteers include: The wonderful 2012-2013 Board members, our Honorary members, Special Activities hosts for many activities, Trivia Night and fundraising committee members (plus the volunteers for each event). And you, our members, who volunteer for many of our monthly socials, make cookies, and help out with other special projects for the Airmen. We are so thankful for each one of you.Who better than a military spouse can understand the sacrifice involved and the powerful end results of volunteering? We're always ready to say YES and jump

right in! I thank all of you who are currently making our SOSC a fun place to serve and I extend an invitation to those of you looking for a place to make a difference. If you'd like to help, please contact us at [email protected].

Speaking of great outcomes from volunteering, Trivia Night was a HUGE success with over $11,000 in profit! A big thanks to Alice Howe and Michelle McLaughlin and their team of volunteers (check out the photos on the website and in this newsletter).

Our fun event this month is BLINGO!! Look inside this great issue of The Contact for more info! Looking forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events or your name in one of our exciting board positions!!

Again, Happy Spring to everyone!!!!!

We’re Looking For a New Board

For Our New Club! The new Scott Spouse Club of 2013-2014 is seeking a new governing body! This includes a new president and new board of governors. Both Spouse Clubs at Scott AFB will officially merge and become one club in the Fall of 2013 and we need your help! The Scott Spouse Club is a private, non-profit organization that functions on the efforts of military spouses like you. You can impact the community in a positive way by stepping up to a role on the new board! In fact, the Spouse Clubs at Scott AFB are notorious for having a positive impact on their stakeholders. By focusing their energies on both charitable and social components, each year they have the luxury of donating tens of thousands of dollars into the local community and bringing lifelong friends together that might not have otherwise met. By participating, your gifts and abilities will represent a golden thread in the beautiful tapestry of all the collaborative efforts of fellow military spouses. Think of the possibilities!

The Scott Spouse Club is governed by an Executive Board and a Board of Governors. Each year a new Board takes their seat in the club to serve their community through collaborative volunteer efforts. We are searching for a wide spectrum of talents to bring into the new board to make the new combined club successful. If you have found yourself having thoughts and opinions of how the Scott Spouse Club should operate, you may be just the spouse we are looking for to serve on the new board! Volunteering your efforts in the new club will not only help to mold and shape it in a positive way, but will be very rewarding to you and the Scott AFB community.

Consider your skills and abilities and how they might surmount to be an asset to the new club. For instance, do you have profound administrative, social, or accounting skills? Do you have a knack for bringing people together? Are you a behind-the-scenes sort of person? All skills and personalities are welcome! Perhaps you need to speak to someone further about how your skills and talents are equivalent to certain board positions. No problem! Send inquiries to Stephanie Price at [email protected].

Are you ready for the task? You can find the application and job descriptions here: http://bit.ly/10LyvLi. If you’re still on the fence, fill out an application anyway just to get your name in the pot and we can discuss this opportunity further with you. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled year!

Friends Of The Military:

For the past five years, efforts have been underway to develop and expand the H.E.R.O.E.S. Care program to ensure it would serve as an effective and meaningful system of support for military members and their families affected by the stressors of deployment. The leadership of both Operation Homefront National and the Missouri Chapter of Operation Homefront have worked together for more than a year to establish H.E.R.O.E.S. Care as an independent entity. That work is now complete.Effective March 7th, the organization that you have known as Operation Homefront of Missouri will now be known as H.E.R.O.E.S. Care and will be run out of the same location, be staffed by the same people you know, be governed by the same board of directors, and continue to offer and provide all of the services enjoyed by our military families in the past.To read the joint press release CLICK HERE.My thanks to our partner organizations and the tireless work of the many fine people who made this possible.~ Jon Jerome [email protected]
