APRIL / MAY 2013

In January we eased into the new year with a regular meeting at the Swiss Club, enjoying the usual coffee, cake and chat. However, only three weeks later, we congregated at the home of Margrit Kilchenmann, right up on the mountainside above Camps Bay. What a view and what a delicious lunch! . Thank you so much, Margrit, for all your hard work!

As Lucy Salzberg wanted us to taste Martin’s special quiche at the Club, our next meeting had to take place a mere fortnight later. We had a great turnout, and I must admit that the quiche was really exceptional. The thought of this as well as the dessert of real

ice cream with chocolate sauce still makes my mouth water! Many thanks again, Lucy, for your most generous invitation.

Please note that we will now have a little break due to the Easter holidays and that our next meeting will be our yearly braai in Jonkershoek on Wednesday, 24 April. Don’t forget to bring your own crockery and cutlery; the food, some cool drink, tea and coffee will be provided. Kindly let Theres know in good time if you’re planning to be there (021 981 7958 or 082 775 5849 or [email protected]).

For the very first time in the history of the SWISS CYCLE-CLUB, one of our cyclists won an age-category !!

Congratulations go to Annette Weber, who came tops amongst all the “over 70’s”, at a stunning time of 5.04.28 !!!Well Done, Annette, next year for a sub 5hrs! Whilst he was not a winner of his category, Fergus Kenny, who is a long-time member and for many years the auditor of our club, completed, at the age of 80, his first “Argus” in an incredible 6.30.54 !!!We all salute you, Fergus, for this incredible achievement !! But as you might have guessed, there were other Swiss Club Riders taking part, and all of them did better than expected !!

Thomas Tobler         3.05.37Hans Herren            3.19.09  (the 28th Argus-Tour !!)Carlo Ostini             3.23.45 (comes every year from Switzerland for this event !)Markus Elmau         3.25.54Rick Brown              3.38.05Marthinus Potgieter  3.40.00Robert Jegger           4.19.56Robert Keller           5.33.42

And then the supporters at ‘little Chappies’ saw a Swiss guy coming through at anincredible pace, who turned out to be Dean Schweizer, who according to the recordsfinished at a commendable 3.05.51 !!! Well Done, Dean !! Maybe, we can convince you to join our small sub-section for next year’s race !!

Finally, a big Thank You to Martin and his Team for a fantastic ‘Carbo-Loading’ - Spread on the evening before the race; it obviously helped !!!

Report–Back of the 90th Annual General Meeting, held on Tuesday,19th March 2013 at the Club-House of the Swiss & Austrian Social Club, Green Point !

Close to 50 members attended this important event on the club’s calendar, showing their interest in the club’s past & future activities. After reading out the apologies received and a Minute of Silence for those members, who had passed on since our last AGM, the President got the proceedings underway.

Unfortunately, our Vice-Consul, Antonia Fischer was unable to attend, due to important Consulate – Matters, which had come about unexpectedly. Fol-lowing the adoption of Minutes of last year’s AGM, our outgoing treasurer, Annette Weber, was able to present a most pleasing Financial Report; in other words, the club’s Finances are well controlled and it’s profit for 2012 was well ahead of expectations !! A Big Well - Done to Annette and Fergus Kenny, our Auditor.

The President’s Report that followed, reflected on the various events, which had taken place during the past year, and in a nut-shell one can say, that all events, if publisized effectively, enjoy a very active participation by our mem-bers, provided the weather-gods do their bit !!

Green Point, that is the ‘Joint Structure’ between the Swiss & Austrians, is still facing some challenges, which are not of a unsurmountable nature and which will be addressed during this present year.

The Report-Backs of our Sub-Sections (only 2 remain) and Affiliated Clubs (Rifle & Tennis) followed and gave those present an overall impression of their activities.

The Web-Site support as well as our bi-monthly News-Letter will continue to get the Committee’s attention; Hans Kunz, who has been instrumental in put-ting the present Web-Site in place has asked to be relieved of this function. Our ‘new kid on the block’, Samuel Reichmuth, who has already left his mark on the past News-letter, will, albeit operating for the next few months out of Switzerland, focus on a re-design of our Web-Site and, together with Padi & Barend, keep our News-Letter as actual and interesting, as our members expect it to be !!

Talking about ‘members’ ......The task of a Membership-Secretary is one of the most demanding functions in any Club’s organization; Andre Haeberli, who took over this office 2 years ago, has asked to be relieved of his posi-tion, however, he will continue to look after the interests of our Advertisers. ‘Thanks, Andre, for all your efforts of the past and we are glad to still have your knowledge and experience within our team !’

Our relationship with the Consulate, during the past 3 years under the leader-ship of Irene Flueckiger, has been excellent as always and we truly appreciate all the support we are getting from her and her team !!

To the outgoing Committee........ A big ‘Thank You’ for guiding your Presi through his first year of office; Your input, support and critique has always been appreciated and I want to salute you for your unselfish commitment you are showing on an ongoing basis !!

The outgoing Committee then made space for our Day-President, Heinz Met-tler, who found his job made surprisingly easy; within 15 minutes he was able to present the new committee to all members present;- President – Stefan Pflocksch- Vice President – Nicky Rodrigues- Secretary – Padi LoSciuto- Treasurer – Nicole Gasser- Membership Secretary – Nadine Lindinger- Advertising – Andre Haeberli- Public Relations – Michael Hauser- News-Letter & Website – Samuel Reichmuth - Youth-Co-ordinator (new position) – Samuel Reichmuth and another (TBC)

Finally, I am very pleased that Marcie Bischof ’s appointment, as one of the two Representatives for the Swiss living in South Africa, has been confirmed !! She will officially take over from Peter Mueller during the convention in August.Thank you Peter for all you have done for all those years and Good Luck to Marcie ! (I am sure, you will have Peter’s shoulder to lean on , when needed, for still quite a while !)

Please Note:This is only a Summary of this year’s AGM; Detailed Minutes will be e-mailed to you in due course or can be requested from our secretary, Padi, who will post them to you.

Kind RegardsStefan Pflocksch – Your Presi

APRIL / MAY 2013

A great friend and true supporter of the Swiss Club has left us. Erich grew up in Kölliken, did a four year apprenticeship in the graphic trade at the printing works of Ringier & Co in Zofingen followed by Rekruten- and Unteroffiziers-Schule. To further his professional training he then accepted work at a printing works in Berne and in Zürich with Conzett & Huber. (Conrad Conzett, son of the former owner, fought as volunteer in the Anglo-Boer War and returned home after being severely wounded) While working in Zürich he signed a contract for three years with Empresa Editora “Zig-Zag” in Santiago de Chile. They were looking for two experts in photogravure printing (Tiefdruck). Erich persuaded a colleague from Berne to join him. They left Switzerland at the beginning of Au-gust 1947 and arrived in Chile nearly two months later on 25 October, and reported for work next morning at eight. Their task was to build the printing works from scratch and train the required staff. Erich was responsible for Photography-Retouche-Montage, Mario for Copy-Etching-Copperfacing. From 1955 when Mario returned to Switzerland Erich was sole manager as Téchnico de Rotograbado. After 15 years at “Zig-Zag” he received an offer from Nasionale Tydskrifte in Cape Town to assist in establishing and managing a new section. He had come to love Chile, as he said “to describe these experiences would fill a book” but the economical and political situation was deteriorat-ing badly. It was time to move and he never regretted this decision. From 1962 until retirement in 1988, during which time he made several trips to Europe and brought back many young Swiss and German printers, he remained responsible for the reproduction right through to the production of the printing-mould for the photogravure printing. In 1967 Erich bought a large piece of land in Tambo-erskloof extending high up on the slopes of Signal Hill. (In

the early 1980s a group of young Swiss started to make a First of August fire on Signal Hill which was plainly visible from practically the whole of Cape Town. When this had to be stopped, Erich invited the approximately 30 country men to celebrate the National Day on the highest point of his prop-erty with a fire for which he provided the wood) A spacious, hundred year old house stood on his property. He could invite his parents to live with him and his brother who was for a short time also employed at Nasionale Pers. The house required many repairs, most of the work Er-ich did himself assisted by his father. By 1981 everything was finished to his satisfaction. During his school years at Kölliken a friendship had developed between Erich and Margrit Fankhauser which deepened when they both worked at Ringier. After leaving Ringier they lost touch. Margrit married a Pfarrer Meili, had children, but after twenty years the marriage ended in divorce. Thirteen years after the divorce in 1981 Erich invited Margit to come and visit him and his parents and she decided to stay. “When a woman seeks a certain man, she will find him!” They enjoyed many happy years in the old house. When Erich was advised to place Margrit in an Old Age Home with frail care facilities where he knew she would have been most unhappy, he decided to keep her at home where he nursed her lovingly to the end. Erich always said that he never wants to leave his house. He loved the view and seldom went to bed without first looking out by the window at the many lights of the town and Table Mountain against the sky. A few years after going on pension, in 1991, Erich joined the Swiss Male Choir. He sang in the bass, a good comrade whose place was seldom empty. He had a passion for the Swiss Club, Swiss music and Swiss songs. A pity the choir no longer existed to sing him a last song. May his soul rest in peace.

Georg Erich Bossard(18 July 1923 - 28 January 2013)

“THE NAME HAD BEEN WITHHELD WHEN THE SWISS CLUB RECEIVED A MAJOR DONATION TWO YEARS AGO. NOW, AFTER HIS DEATH, THE GENEROUS DONOR WAS MADE KNOWN: ERICH BOSSARD. ERICH, YOU LOVED YOUR CLUB AND WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY SPECIAL WAY OF SHOWING IT.”

Hochzeit in Tulbagh, 23.

PRESI REPORT

to say ... you know where to come to on Sunday, 9th February 2014 !!

With “ Jonkies” gaining more and more popularity, thanks to all the improvements made by our tireless Jonkershoek-Committee, one of our next big events, will also take place there !! “ The Easter – Bunny” will arrive there, this year on a Tandem, which will be auctioned-off, once all the ‘nests’ have been found !!

When we talk about ‘traditional’ events, the Community-Chest Carnival stand right up there, an event, which in all the many years that I’ve been part of it, has always been one of THE Annual Fun-Events with a worthwhile cause !!

In recent years all clubs experienced the same kind of dilemma, ... a shortage of volunteers and keen supporters, who have their hearts on the right spot !!After our Male Choir carried through the tradition of preparing the unique “Rosen-Kuchen”, which proved to be an absolute ‘hit’ at each year’s carnival, with Hedi & Ernest Buerki at the helm, a small group of very committed helpers continued in the same tradition as the years before. We need to salute them for having been the drivers of one of the most profitable vehicles in the Community Chest Team !!

Well Done & a Big THANK YOU from the Swiss Club Committee !!

As far as our Club-Venue in Green Point is concerned, I have the following to report;

DEAR CLUB-MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE SWISS SOCIAL & SPORTS CLUB.

Martin Dannecker, who has been our loyal Caterer for the past 16 months, will be leaving his second home and goes back to Germany, in order to look after his family’s Restaurant Business; we would like to thank him wholeheartedly for all he and his team have done during this past year and we want to wish him all the success and required luck in approaching a new challenge.

A successor to Martin is in the process of being appointed and will take over the Catering-Duties at the Club towards the end of May 2013; In the interim Moira & yours truly will be looking after your and other parties culinary well-being.

Finally, I would like to blow the horn a bit for our ‘forgotten’ affiliations and sub-sections; they need your support; be it by participating at the ‘Feldschiessen” at the Swiss Rifle Club’s Shooting-range, at their beautiful setting just above Simons-Town, or be it by becoming a member at the “Swiss Tamboerskloof Tennis Club”; which does not mean that you can’t phone Hans Herren to find out, where they will be cycling to the on-coming Sunday. Our “Club” has so much to offer !! Why not join into the fun more often !! Wishing you and your families a happy and safe Easter-Weekend,I remain,With my dearest regards,Your Presi & his Committee

These lines will have been written just before our Club’s 90th Annual General Meeting will have taken place, on Tuesday 19th March 2013. Which means, counting the years from the first gathering that some ‘wise women & men’ must have had on the 29th May 1923, our Club is turning 90 years old this year !!What an achievement, made possible only through the tremendeous enthusiasm of the many Swiss, who wanted to maintain and conserve the so valuable traditions of their country of origin !!

In order to commemorate and celebrate this occasion in a deserved manner, we will stage a 90-year Anniversary – Brunch on Sunday, 2nd June 2013; (details will follow closer to the time via post and e-mail). May we see many ‘old friends’ getting together for this festive event !!

As far as our club’s activities are concerned, we had a very good start into 2013; the traditional “Waldfescht”, staged as every year on the 2nd February-Weekend, was a great success!! A BIG THANK YOU to all those, who came to our lovely forest, in spite of some terrible weather-conditions, which prevailed during the day & night before. It was truly a most enjoyable get-to-gether, with lots of visitors and long-forgotten friends joining-in. It felt like the ‘good old’ times !! - So to those that lost out, I want

“THE EASTER-BUNNY CAME TO JONKERSHOEK”

www.gastrofoods.com

As every year, he came again to deliver these beautifully prepared Easter-Egg Baskets to our young members and their friends, this time on the back-seat of a tandem-Bicycle, which afterwards should have been auctioned-off as a valuable ‘Jonkies’ - Fundraiser, having carried such a celebrity; (the auction ,which didn’t happen, will be carried-over !). Having had some real let-downs by ‘Petrus’ over the

past 3 years, the 30 or so kids had a great time searching for ‘the treasure’ in very pleasant weather-conditions; ‘Thank you, Bunny, for being in time’ , because 2 hours later the skies opened-up again !!

On this note, Jonkershoek, again, deserves a ‘big hand’ for what it offers and which was thoroughly enjoyed by the very impressive

turn-out for yet another very pleasing club - event. Finally, a big Thank You to Padi & Roger for organising the ‘colouring of the Easter-eggs’ and Nicky for preparing the 50 nests (and everything else, which made it happen!!)

A most grateful Swiss Club Committee !!
