It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I try to keep that in mind when I hear of the various publications around that seem to try and pass them-selves off as ‘The Five Valleys Directory’. Competition is always healthy and seeing these publications about isn’t the problem-the problem is when I get feedback from people telling me that they have been telephoned by someone calling themselves ‘The Directory’ and who they believed to be the FVD. I would like to make it clear to every-one out there that if you receive a call from The Five Valleys Directory, it will only come from me and all others are poor impersonations -I cannot be held responsible!

Having got that off my chest, it’s lovely to be into a Spring edition. I do hope you like our cover this month which was provided by Sheepscombe School. What a beautiful rural environment to have a school-you can read more about it on pages 30-31. Spring seems to make us all more cheerful but just in case you are finding it all a bit of a strug-gle at the moment turn to page 20 for our article on ’Happiness’ by Zoe Warner.

Being a ’fairweather’ gardener this is about the time I start looking at the garden and thinking I really must make a start. Our People Profile this month is Tiggy Lessner, a garden designer who braves the elements even when she isn’t working!

Until next month……..Catherine

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Firstly, be realistic remember nobody is happy all the time. A good aim is to be the happiest person you can be. Happiness is not determined by objec-tive factors, but by how you feel/ react to them. Only you can make your-self happy not other people or objects. However if someone makes you feel good about yourself and you feel happier around them try to spend as much time as you can around them, and vice versa if someone makes it hard for you to feel happy and good about yourself remove yourself from them or spending time around them. Firstly, if you are suffering from a severe illness feel low or depressed or other mental health issue always seek medical advice and book in an appointment A.S.A.P. with your GP. Make some “me” time for yourself every day, a nice relaxing bath, a walk, something you enjoy doing and do it without feeling guilty about it. Savour good moments every day, think of something good and enjoy thinking about it. Drop impossible tasks in favour of tasks that are at the outer limits of your skill set. Practice mindfulness Exercise, move your body Eat a regular balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit vegetables and fish and drink lots of water and herbal tea. Cut out/down on toxins such as tea, coffee, alcohol, smoking drugs- get help quitting them if you need to. Speak to your GP for sign posting in the right direc-tion Forgive yourself and forgive others, let go of grudges and anger you are holding onto, learning meditation or practicing Tai chai may help. Stop thinking and talking about your problems all the time, concentrate on talking about other topics Develop a pastime-listening to music, reading , drama, dancing Focus on what you have not what you don’t have or want. Never lose hope. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope is something you can never afford to lose. With hope you always have a path towards happiness. Hope re-minds you that everything will be ok. With hope, you know that whatever looks terrible is only temporary and it will not last and that soon enough, things will be just fine.

People Profile

Tiggy Lessner

Garden Designer

Where were you born and where have you lived? I was born and brought up in Huntley, Gloucestershire in a Victorian house with a large garden and productive vegetable garden. For a very short period in my youth I moved to Scotland and London. Other than that I have for the last forty two years, lived within a four mile radius of my present home in Box. I lived in Waterlane, Oakridge for ten years where my four girls were born over a period of five years. I then moved to France Lynch for twenty years where my son was born several years later-he was a bit of a surprise! I have lived in Box for the last ten years. I have eight grandchildren, four boys and four girls.

I recall my first visit to Oakridge when I ran out of milk and was told just to go up to the farm and help myself to whatever I needed from the huge fridge in the yard and to leave a note to tell the milkman what I’d taken!

Influences in your life? I have always liked to be outside and so landscape and gardening have always been focal points to me, other than bringing up my children of course. I was a full-time parent for a long period in the 70’s and 80’s before becoming a profes-sional gardener and then designer.

Do you have any particular hobbies? As I have said I need to be outside and I am an open water swimmer. I go swim-ming in Lake 32 at South Cerney three or four times a week and camp overnight so that I can swim in the evening and morning. There is a triathalon group I belong to who also camp out there and I get up about 6.00a.m and swim out to the middle of the lake to be with the coots and grebes, it gives me a sense of great tranquillity; as does watching the cormorants stretching their wings on the pontoons moored out on the lake. I am happy to swim in all weathers through-out the year even if there is snow and ice on the edge of the lake, I also do a lot of cycling but not running-that doesn’t suit my knees! Do you manage to take holidays? Mt holidays are action-packed! I have been to the Lake District to swim in Crummuck water and Buttermere and to walk the hills in-between. My last holiday was canoeing with friends on the Wye and for my next one I am going surfing in the Gower where I can also ride one of my daughters ponies.

I used to combine my love of the outdoor activities with painting and draw-ing landscapes but I have decided to concentrate on my work and main passion, garden design. When I was studying garden design I was warned that only about 35% of the designs I presented would actually be built. My average is more like 95%. Before I design a garden I meet the owners in their home for a consultation to understand their personalities and style. If their interior taste is for big and bold this is what they appreciate in their gardens. It is important to know the view of the garden from inside the house and where they like to sit in the garden-where their favourite place is in the garden and why. Consultations enable me to explain the cost and get to know what they would like in their garden. Gardens are a personal choice and I have a completely open mind as to what people may choose to have in their garden.

I have recently designed a garden which is only 2.5 metres x 9 metres and features a beautiful snaking stone wall with a roof and blue slate created by Max Comfort, an architect. I am also working on a design for a six acre garden and am perfecting a beautiful Georgian rectory garden. If I was given £500.000 to create a garden without proper consultation with the owner, I would not take on the commission.

Balance is so important in a garden. On two projects I have completed, a garage and some decking were completely dominating the views and I managed with careful planning to redress the balance. In another garden I had to redesign a water feature to ensure the family tortoise did not continue to fall in a pond!

Simplicity is what I seek-a strong design layout is what is important. It is not about planting stunning plants, if the garden design flows the plants can develop over time. Everybody’s personal outdoor space is important however big or small, that’s why I love the job I do.

The Ladies Fit, Fun, Five Fundraiser

Tuesday 30th April 2013 Stroud High School Sports Hall

6.15-8.45pm

On Tuesday 30th April, JUST CLASSES are hosting a Ladies only evening of fitness fun class taster sessions with all proceeds being donated to the MENINGITIS TRUST.

There will be 5 half hour taster sessions that will run from 6.15pm-8.45pm at STROUD HIGH SCHOOL sports hall which is situated on Beards Lane, Cainscross Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 4HF.

BODYCOMBAT/ATTACK (6.15pm), TURBOKICK (6.45pm), SH’BAM (7.15pm), a FUN SURPRISE SIZZLER (7.45pm) and BODYSTEP (8.15pm)

SH’BAM is hailed as the NEW Zumba of 2013 with easy to follow moves and great music, whilst TURBOKICK

with high energy routines and kicking and punching drills has come straight to Stroud from the USA and is not available anywhere else in the UK. BODYSTEP and a mix of BODYCOMBAT and BODYATTACK

are old favourites from the LESMILLS programmes.

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It can strike quickly and kill within hours – its impact can last a lifetime. The Meningitis Trust is the UK’s primary provider of

professional services and community-based support for people affected by meningitis.

This is a great opportunity to help a worthwhile cause and try something new. We are asking for a minimum donation of £5 but as every little helps, we would appreciate whatever you can give to help support the Trust.

Whether you want to punch yourself fit, kick yourself a new butt, wiggle away your waist, shake yourself some new hips or step your legs into great shape; there is something for everyone. Bring a drink, bring a towel, bring a friend,

and have some fun and help make a difference! You can do all the sessions or just some. The choice is yours!

Just Classes, located in Stroud, specialise in community-based group fitness exercise, providing classes that you would normally only find at a gym. Our professional instructors are fully qualified LESMILLS instructors and have been

training different groups and ages of people for many years. Visit our website at www.just-classes.co.uk

The event will be held in a spacious sports hall which has been generously loaned to us by Stroud High School. There is ample room for everyone and free parking directly outside.

For any further information regarding this event email [email protected]

or call Keri on 07790608001

Sheepscombe Primary School and the Little Lambs Nursery offer a friendly,

creative and caring learning environment for your child.

Located in a beautiful rural setting, and with easy access from Painswick, Stroud and the Five Valleys, the school embraces a broad-based curriculum and is very proud of its Guardianship status with the nearby National Trust Ebworth Estate. This wonderful resource is within close walking distance and is regularly used by all pupils as an ‘outdoor classroom’ to develop and extend class work. Our beautiful, genuine Yurt provides a base for the day and shelter from the elements!

We’re also proud of our strong links with the local community, both with-in the school and beyond, where we regularly take part in local activities and events. The school places great emphasis on caring for children with a variety of needs and abilities; our newest staff member is fully BSL (British Sign Language) qualified. We also offer a range of lunchtime and after-school clubs in art, music and sports.

The Little Lambs Nursery at Sheepscombe Primary welcomes children aged 3+ and encourages each child to discover their full potential and to feel confident and supported in their individuality within a secure, caring

and nurturing environment.

Situated within the boundaries of the primary school at the heart of the village, Little Lambs also em-braces outdoor life with constant ‘inside outside’ free-flow activi-ties. Learning follows the DfE Early Years Foundation Stage Framework which places emphasis on learning through purposeful planned play.

Does anyone remember the Hilaire Belloc poems about the tragic early death of Henry King from eating little bits of string or Matilda and her dread-ful lies? Or the tale of King Canute and his belief that he could command the tide? Do these two poems and a fable have anything in common you may ask?

Well, I am sure Henry was told time and time again not to eat string, and didn’t take any notice. This is a bit like our attitude to our environ-ment. We continue to exploit it recklessly despite advice to the contrary. As a career politician recently observed, generally when scientists put forward their views based on scientific research we accept what they say. They say there is a connection between smoking and cancer, we stop smoking! Indeed, we pass laws stopping us smoking in many plac-es, Contrast carbon emissions and climate change which we can evi-dence with our own eyes. Are all these scientists dreadful little liars like Matilda? Well, even if they were, proper insulation of our homes and alternative energy sources must be a good idea as coal, oil and gas supplies are running out . The steps we have taken so far hardly skim the surface of the problem.

We still persist in seeking to extract oil in the Arctic and the latest idea is to extract minerals from the depths of the oceans, by scrapping the ocean bed. Surely the environmental damage this will cause is obvious. We still drag our coastal sea floors for shell fish, causing horrific damage to the habitat of the fish and wonder why they are becoming scarce. There are no fishing-free zones anywhere in the world so how do we expect fish stocks to recover? We are still cutting down swathes of rain forest despite scientific warnings. We are still refusing to talk or think about any measures to control the ever increasing human population. We set aside a special day for saving children on the planet but we do not have one day in the year dedicated to saving the planet for all these children. Why are we just carrying on as if nothing is happening to our world?

King Canute? Well, that will be the futile attempts of future generations to stop the flooding when the ice has melted and the oceans flood our major cities, devastation brought upon them by our failure to respect Mother Earth. GSD Lifeline was set up over 5 years ago as a small, specialised and highly dedicated German Shepherd rescue. Based in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire we rescue and rehome dogs from across England and Wales. These dogs find themselves with us through no fault of their own; for example some are found abandoned and are at risk of being put to sleep unless rescued.

All our dogs are health checked, vaccinated and fully assessed prior to adoption. Due to the number of dogs currently in our care we now desperately need

Adopters – some of our adopters have owned the breed before, for some it’s their first German Shepherd. We match the right dog to the right home.

Foster homes – providing a caring and settled home environment before re-homing. Volunteers - for example to undertake home checks and help with fundraising.

You can find out more about what we do, view dogs needing homes or make a donation by visiting our website at www.gsdlifeline.com or email [email protected] You can also find us on our growing Facebook community.

Could you offer one of these lovely dogs a forever home?
