The 28-member European Union has temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes, the king of fruits, and four vegetables from India from May 1, sparking protests from the Indian community, lawmakers and traders.

▬ ECONOMY ▬

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India was forecasted to rise to 5.5 percent in 2014-15. This was revealed by the Asian Development Outlook 2014. The report was released by the Asian Development Bank. The rise in the GDP was due to improvement in the performance of the Industry and services.

Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs notified rules for ten more chapters in the new Companies Act,

2013. The new Companies Act, 2013 that was passed by the Parliament in August 2013 came into effect on 1 April 2014.

According to the ADB Outlook 2014, developing Asia is expected to extend its steady growth from 6.1 percent in 2013 to 6.2 percent in 2014 and 6.4 percent in 2015.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had revamped its committee on disclosures and accounting standards. This committee advices SEBI on matters related to disclosure requirements and accounting practices for various market participants.

World Trade Organisation (WTO) projected that the world trade will grow by 4.7 percent in 2014. It also projected that the growth in 2015 will slightly be faster at 5.3 percent, which is 20 year average growth rate.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision issued Final standards for measuring and controlling large exposures of banks to customers. These standards will take effect from 1 January 2019.

Inflation based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) reached a 3-month high of 5.7% in March 2014. This hike was driven up by increases in prices of food items and fuel costs.

Capital market regulator of India, the Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued detailed corporate governance norms for listed companies. The norms have been launched for stricter disclosures and protection of investor rights, including equitable treatment for minority and foreign shareholders.

Union Government of India decided to continue the export subsidy of 3300 rupees per tonne on raw sugar shipments for April - May 2014 period.

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Ltd (IFFCO), India's leading fertiliser cooperative, got permission from the Quebec Provincial Government to set up a 1.6 billion US dollar Urea plant. Quebec province, Canada's largest, is located in the east-central region of the country.

Government Internal Revenue Order (GIRO) Advisory Group (GAG) under the chairmanship of Prof. Umesh Bellur has submitted its report to Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

President Francois Hollande on 31 March 2014 appointed Interior Minister Manuel Valls as next prime minister of France. Manuel Carlos Valls is a Spanish-born French Socialist Party politician. He was the Mayor of Évry from 2001 to 2012 and a Member of the National Assembly since 2002.

Karim Massimov was named as the new Prime Minister of Kazakhstan after Serik Akhmetov resigned from the post.

US President Barack Obama on 4 April 2014 nominated Sunil Sabharwal as the next US Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Admiral Robin K Dhowan (PVSM AVSM YSM ADC) on 17th April 2014 took over as the 22nd Chief of Indian Navy.

SC appointed Hudson McHugh as 3rd arbitrator to resolve dispute of Centre and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on KG basin.

Union Cabinet on 16 April 2014 approved the appointment of Narendra Kothari as Chairman of the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC).

Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram has been designated as the new finance secretary.

Suresh Kumar Reddy appointed as the First ambassador to ASEAN and East Asia Summit. This was done by The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) .

Rajeev Suri appointed as President and CEO of Nokia Corporation.

▬ BANKING/BUSINESS ▬

RBI (Reserve Bank of India) in its first bimonthly monetary policy statement kept the key policy rate (repo) unchanged on 1st April 2014.

The Reserve Bank capped the ways and means advances limit for the central government in the first half of the new financial year (FY 2015) at Rs 35,000 crore per week. The interest rate on WMA/overdraft will be based on a) WMA: Repo Rate b) Overdraft: Two percent above the Repo Rate

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its first bi-monthly monetary policy statement for 2014- 15 directed banks not to impose financial penalty on the consumers in case of non-maintenance of minimum balance in their saving accounts.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) adopted the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) combined as the key measure of Inflation.

RBI has appointed R Gandhi as the Deputy Governor on 3 April 2014 for a period of three years. He is the successor of Anand Sinha.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 2 April 2014 granted in-principle approvals to IDFC Ltd and Bandhan Financial Services Pvt. Ltd to start new banks in India. The two entities, Bandhan based in Kolkata and IDFC based in Mumbai that has received the approvals are non-banking finance companies. Bandhan is a microfinance institution and IDFC is classified as an infrastructure finance company.

Qatar based Doha Bank announced on 3 April 2014 that it will be opening its first branch at Nariman Point in Mumbai in India. The branch in Mumbai will be opened as a full-fledged bank in May 2014.

After launching accounts on Facebook and Youtube, the country's largest lender SBI took one more step on the social media front by launching a twitter handle. The Twitter handle for SBI is TheOfficialSBI.

SBI is going more social by Twitter now, SBI is already having Facebook and youtube accounts. Now this banking gaint has launched its twitter account. It was launched on 11th April 2014.

The country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has launched a financing scheme for women fashion boutique owners. ‘Boutique Financin’, the scheme is designed to offer working capital expenses as well as term loan for boutique owners.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision on 15 April 2014 issued Final standards for measuring and controlling large exposures of banks to customers. These standards will take effect from 1 January 2019.

The panel known as GIRO (Government Internal Revenue Order) Advisory Group or GAG, headed by IIT Bombay professor Umesh Bellur, was set up last October and was looking into GIRO- based electronic system. It is a centralised process that allows payments for utility bills, educational fees and insurance premium by just visiting the bank branch.

GIRO committee set up by Reserve Bank of India has suggested a mechanism for centralised bills payment system in the country, primarily by setting up two organisations - Bharat Bill Payment Services or BBPS and the Bharat Bill Payment Operating Units or BBPOUs.

State Bank of India (SBI) has signed an MoU with Enable India, a non-profit organisation, to train persons with disabilities towards economic independence.

The deadline for switching to new format bank cheques under the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) ended on 30 April 2014. Now, transactions with cheques that have Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) and not CTS technology will be likely to take four days or more from the date of deposit to credit the amount. Banks will now clear non-CTS cheques on Mondays and Fridays only.

Former American middleweight boxer, Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter died at his home in Toronto, Canada following a battle with prostate cancer. He was 76.

Arturo Licata, the World's oldest man died in Italy at the age of 111. He was awarded the Guinness World Records title of oldest living man on 28 February 2014 at the age of 111 years and 302 days.

English actor Bob Hoskins who worked in films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Mona Lisa, and Hook died at the age of 71 due to pneumonia.

Indian theatre personality and artist Khaled Choudhury died at the age of 94. April 30: Famous British actor Chris Harris died at the age of 71 due to cancer.

World's oldest man, Arturo Licata died at the age of 111. He was awarded the Guinness World Records title of oldest living man on 28 February 2014.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Walter "King" Fleming was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He died at the age of 91.

Former President of Guinea Kumba Yala died at the age of 61 due to cardiac arrest.

Ashish Bose, veteran demographer died in New Delhi due to illness on 7 April 2014.

Mary Lou Petty, an American Olympic swimmer died at the age of 98.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Niedringhaus shot dead in Afghanistan.

Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, V K Murthy died on 7 April 2014 at his residence in Shankarapuram. He was 91.

Novelist Sue Townsend on 11 April 2014 died after a short illness.

Mickey Rooney, the American film actor died.

A Dutch priest Frans Van der Lugt was shot dead in Homs by a gunman. He was 70.

Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana (MGPSY)is a Pension and Life Insurance fund scheme introduced by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs for the Overseas Indian workers having Emigration Check Required (ECR) passports.

Objectives of MGPSY:

To encourage and facilitate the Overseas Indian workers by providing government contribution to:

1. Save for their Return and Resettlement (R&R) 2. Save for their old age 3. Obtain a Life Insurance cover against natural death during the period of coverage.

The government contribution available under the MGPSY is for a period of five years or till the return of subscribed worker back to India, whichever is earlier.

►► European Union bans Indian Alphonso mangoes, veggies :

The 28-nation bloc European Union (EU) has imposed a temporary ban on the import of Alphonso mangoes, the king of fruits, and 4 vegetables from India effective from May 1, 2014.

The move by EU has led to protests from the Indian community, legislators and traders. The temporary ban includes Alphonso mangoes, eggplant, taro plant, bitter gourd and snake

gourd, and prohibits the import to tackle the deficiency in the sanitary certification system of such products exported to the EU.

EU has imposed a temporary ban on following:-

The EU’s Standing Committee on Plant Health decided to impose the ban after 207 consignments of fruits and vegetables from India imported into the EU in 2013 were found to be contaminated by pests such as fruit flies and other quarantine pests.

►► Rajeev Suri appointed as Nokia’s new CEO :

Rajeev Suri (46) has been announced the new CEO of Finnish telecommunications gadget manufacturer Nokia.

Previously, Suri was the head of Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), the smaller network equipment unit of Nokia when the company still made mobile phones.

Suri one of those rare top corporate executives who have attained heights without pursuing any MBA/PG degree.

Recently, Nokia finalized a $7.5 billion deal for the sale of its struggling mobile phone business to Microsoft.

►► Justice G Rohini becomes first ever woman Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court :

President Pranab Mukherjee cleared the nomination of Justice G Rohini (59), the most senior judge of the Andhra Pradesh high court, as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

Prior to Justice Rohini’s appointment, the Delhi high court had a strength of 40, out of which 9 were women. She will be the 10th woman judge at the Delhi high court.

In February 2014, Collegium of Supreme Court of India, headed by Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam nominated Justice Rohini as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. She will charge as the first woman chief justice of Delhi High Court, 47 years after the court was established in October 1966.

Justice G. Rohini is expected to stay for a period of 4 years if not elevated to the Supreme Court. At present, out of 29 judges in the Supreme Court, only 2 are women.

“Crusader or Conspirator? Coalgate and other Truths” authored by former coal secretary P C Parakh released.

Controversy about the book:

Parekh in his controversial book has alleged that the PM Manmohan Singh incapable to avert his own junior ministers from blocking a move towards a more transparent system of bidding for coal blocks.

Parekh has also claimed that the coal scam could have been averted had PM Singh hard-pressed for reforms, including e-marketing and open auction of coal blocks, as recommended by Parekh to PM. The book details the corrupt practices under the UPA and NDA regime.

►► “The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh” – Book by Sanjaya Baru, former Media Advisor to PM:

“The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh” – a memoir by Indian policy analyst Sanjaya Baru released. Mr. Baru was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Media Advisor from May 2004 until August 2008.

Controversy about the book:

The book proclaims that PM Singh had neither complete control over his cabinet nor the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The book instead alleges that a considerable power was possessed by the Congress Party’s President Sonia Gandhi, to whom PM Singh was entirely “subservient“.

Thus, the book paints a incriminating portrait of a PM who was in office but “not in power”, while Congress President Sonia Gandhi called the shots.

►► Election Commission ropes in Aamir Khan as ‘National Icon’ :

The Election Commission has signed up leading Bollywood actor Aamir Khan as its 'national icon' in the run-up to 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Aamir will be part of the EC's voter awareness initiatives.

His main task would be to encourage more and more people to vote in the General Elections.

Aamir joins the league of four other ‘National Icons’-Indian Cricket team Captain Mahendra

Singh Dhoni, boxer MC Mary Kom, badminton ace Saina Nehwal and former president APJ

Abdul Kalam.

►► Justice R.M. Lodha to be the next Chief Justice of India :

Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha (64) as the next Chief Justice of India. Justice R.M. Lodh will have a short tenure of 5 months as the Chief Justice as he is scheduled to

retire on September 27, 2014.
