c o n t e n tVOLUME 3 ISSUE 4 / April 2011

Each year around this time, it starts. My husband, who is not at all one for keeping up with the Jones’, starts standing on our front porch, cursing our lawn. He points out brown spots. He speculates on insect infestation. He walks measured steps, tossing fertilizer and grass seed. He loads up the weed torch and goes on a flaming frenzy. It’s lawn season. So I asked local lawn expert Ken Kukay for a detailed how-to on creating a lawn worthy of neighbourhood envy. I plan to discreetly put it on Eric’s pillow and blame one of the kids. In other news, it’s Easter! A time of rebirth and spring and newness and chocolate and bunnies. We found the best products in town to celebrate the season – even ones with glitter. We also bring you a look at uxperience, the local, all-inclusive variety show that has tickled the funny bones of Uxbridgians for the past 20 years. Remember the IGA Watchers? An Air Farce to Remember with a plane landing on Brock Street? Read on for more, plus food for Earth Day and your packed community events calendar.

Enjoy!

P.S. Did you know each week we send out a packed email newsletter? Listing community events, recent stories and more, it’s an invaluable tool for residents. Sign up atwww.uxbridgetowntalk.com/e-newsletter.

Pick up copies at: Zehrs, Blue Heron Books, Township office, Uxbridge & Zephyr libraries, Elemi Organics, The UPS Store, the Tin Cup and more.

We talk to our fans each day on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/uxbridgetowntalk.com) but

this month let them collectively pick our front cover! Check out some of their ideas – we laughed at how many people suggested chocolate! – and compare with what we decided on: Colleen Carruthers Lubbock - Bunnies, Eggs and chocolate!! Chris Roth - Daffodils.....April is cancer month.....lovely sign of rebirth and spring. Dawn Fisher - Ukrainian Easter Eggs..Pyansky! I try to do a couple of eggs a year; it’s time I spend remember-ing my Baba (grandmother). Jennifer Martens - Eggs! Kevin Alcock - Maple syrup production. Paige Warwick Morden - Daffodils with some cute rubber boots and a bunny. Le’Anne Megaffin - Spring flowers, chocolate, and bunnies! They all go so well together. Pierre Mitham - How about some of the local newborn horsies?

WHO: Brett Simmonds, owner of Ineo Studios

WHAT: With names such asSinatra Lounge, Hendrix Playhouse and Beethoven Hall, this music haven is tucked into Technology Square just north of downtown Uxbridge. Since June 2010, its halls have resonated with full album recordings (for local band 1985) to piano recitals and summer music camps for kids.

HOW: Despite a first chosen career path in phys ed, Simmonds fell in love with music while working as a producer for films. “You can interact with artists at their shows, but it’s totally different when they’re in their creative element in studio,” he says. Ineo is stuffed with top-of-the-line sound and

recording equipment, instruments and rooms for any level of performer, including music teachers.

WHY: “There’s a ton of awesome local mu-sic and bands in Uxbridge,” Simmonds says of launching a recording studio here. “Plus a lot of bands like to get out of Toronto to record.”

PORTFOLIO: Simmonds has worked with local talent Leah Daniels, composed music for films and jingles for commercials. He recently produced a full album with Ux-bridge band 1985.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7 rooms. 7 guitars, 2 pianos (1 grand, 1 digital), 5 amplifiers, 2 drum kits, 16 recording channels. Teaching

suite rental $22.50/hour. Recording studio rental $250-$5,000/hour. One recent rap song took a record 316 takes to complete.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Long hours. The day before our interview, Simmonds was in studio with a band until 3 a.m.

BIGGEST REWARD: “This is my life,” he says. “The biggest reward would be to have some of my produced music go huge. I just love when people bring their music to me.”

NEAT: Ineo is Latin for to create, to step into.

Uxbridge resident Katharine Shepherd always seems to be on the run...literally. If she isn’t teaching piano, volunteering

her time with the Uxbridge Minor Hockey Association or keeping pace with her husband, Paul, and three sons, Daniel, David and James, she is often found pounding the pavement in preparation for her next big race.

Shepherd’s passion for long distance running started more than 25 years ago when she met a friend who inspired her to take up the sport. “I love it,” she exclaims. “I have such a great sup-port system of friends, and I learn a lot from them. It’s part of my lifestyle, now.”

Shepherd’s very first marathon was the Toronto Marathon in 1998; however, after many weeks of training, she had discovered just a few days prior to the event that she was expecting her third child, James. “I was sick throughout the entire event,” she laughs. Since then, she has competed in the famous Boston Marathon in 2001, for which she had to qualify, and the Mississauga Marathon in 2005.

As if long distance running wasn’t enough of a challenge, she fell in love with the triathlon – a gruelling sport that combines swim-ming, cycling and running into one event. To prepare for a triath-lon, Shepherd alternates between swimming, cycling and running, spending between 15 and 20 hours each week in training.

A highlight in her life was winning the Ontario Provincial Olym-pic Distance Triathlon Championships in Wasaga Beach in 2003, which automatically qualified her to participate in the Triathlon World Championships held in Queenstown, New Zealand later that year. It was at that event where she met fellow Canadian and inspiration, Simon Whitfield, who had won the gold medal in the triathlon in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Always ready for a challenge, Shepherd was approached by the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Auxiliary to be the race director for this year’s Uxbridge Half Marathon, an annual event held to raise funds for the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital. Having been involved since its inception in 2008, she had a vision of what she would want to do if given the chance to direct the event: to conduct a well-organized race incorporating the unique theme of the “Trail Capital of Canada.”

Held on April 23 at Wooden Sticks Golf Club, the Run for the Diamond includes something for everybody: a 21.1K, 10K and 5K race as well as the 300M Dash for Kids, which is followed by an

Easter egg hunt for the young participants. The courses for the major events wind through the scenic Uxbridge Countryside Preserve and on several beautiful holes of the Wooden Sticks Golf Club. Approximately 700 participants are expected this year with hopes of reaching 1,000 to 1,500 runners in the years to come. “It is so exciting to see people lining the streets the whole route long cheering you on,” beams Shepherd. “It’s a great atmosphere!” And with her order already placed for perfect weather, it just couldn’t get any better for a very memorable day.

It’s Wednesday evening and the drama room at Uxbridge Secondary School is alive in song. The three dozen or so

chorus and band members of uxperience are seated facing the piano at the side of the room, sheet music in hand. Music director, Christina Enns, provides some instruction and the group takes it from the top, belting out the words to “Sea Cruise” by Frankie Ford. The room is comprised of 20-somethings to grandparents, and everyone in between. Cheryl Hinzel, director of this year’s show, is seated just inside the door observing the musical preparations for the 20th anniversary perfor-mance of Uxperience.

Hinzel has been a part of the show since its inception, and this year is directing for the third time. Her journey with uxperience began 20 years ago at the Uxbridge Public Library where she was having story time with her three kids. Another mom, Cathy Christoff, introduced herself and talk turned to the new local variety group that Christoff and her husband were starting.

“They were having their start-up meeting literally the next week,” Hinzel says. “I went and I’ve been in it ever since.”

The group’s mandate has remained largely unchanged since it began in 1992: “To get together as a community, to have fun and to raise funds to give back to the community,” she adds.

Uxperience has raised nearly $90,000 for various community orga-nizations over the past two decades. Proceeds from this year’s show will go to Precious Minds Blaze Summer Camp.

Apart from raising funds for deserving community groups, uxperience is also known for being inclusive. There are no auditions to participate in the show and skits are often written to suit those playing the roles.

“The cool thing and the different thing about uxperience that no other group does is that we pick a theme and we write the whole show. We don’t buy rights to something and then put on a show that’s been done elsewhere. They’re completely and totally unique,”

Hinzel says.These one-of-a-kind shows have

captured moments that you would only find in Uxbridge, like the year a filmed opening sequence was shot on Brock St. for An Air Farce to Remember. Where else could you see an airplane rolling through the middle of town, stopping for gas at the Peck Brothers’ Shell station? And who could forget the famous I.G.A. Watchers, a recurring skit that saw Ken More, Steve David and Fred Cotie sitting on a bench observing the town’s daily comings and goings, sparking laughter from the audience before they even said a word.

Cyndie Jacobs, a musician, joined uxperience one year after its inaugural show.

GUEST COLUMN

As the winter snow melts away, it reveals the horror that has been hidden for the last four months: your lawn. How are

you going to turn that soggy, brown patchy mess into a lush, green carpet that is the envy of your neighborhood?

The secret to a really great lawn is you need to build up what you can’t see—the roots. A thick root system will produce a more lush lawn, which will block out new weed growth and provide a less inviting place for damaging insects, such as grubs or chinch bugs.

Your lawn, like you, needs food and water. Fertilize your lawn with a high-quality product four to five times during the growing season, including once in the fall or winter. Over-seed bare spots with grass seed or use sod to add a quick shot of green. Get your lawn mower blades sharpened as dull blades tear the grass tips, which will cause your lawn to dehydrate faster. In the sum-mer, do not cut your lawn too short as this stresses the lawn, creating the perfect environ-ment for weeds and insects to take hold. Water your lawn regularly, using 1” to 1.5” of water per week. Early in morn-ing or in the evening is the best time to water. As for the weeds, try to pull them as soon as you can.

For even better results, ask your lawn-care company about getting your lawn aerated at least once per season and have them provide you with an effective, natural weed- or insect-control program. You should also inquire about the benefits of getting your soil tested as it can also help create a healthy lawn.

With a little time and effort you too can have that lawn which is the envy of the neighborhood.

Julie Fitz-Gerald is a freelance writer based in Uxbridge, where she resides with her husband and two young sons.

The Secret to a Great LawnBy Ken Kukay

rally to me,” she says of her 19 years with the performance group. “It’s my way of honouring my heritage and I love it. It’s also a great way to be in-volved in the community.”

Community involve-ment is what brought Gary Newton out for the first time this year.

“We are actually new to town in the last four and a half years. For me, it’s a chance to get out and meet people in the commu-nity, since I don’t work in town,” Newton says.

While the chorus continues rehearsing, Hinzel heads back through the school to the renovated weight room, which has been expanded to include a sunken dance floor surrounded by mirrors. Here the dancers are learning choreography. For dancer Michelle VanDyke-Houghton, uxperience is a family affair. Her mom, Dale, sings in the chorus and her dad, Ed, plays drums in the band.

“It’s a blast,” she says enthusiastically. “I got married a few years ago and moved away, so it’s nice to come [back to Ux-bridge] for this. We spend January through May seeing each other a lot. It’s nice to be able to do that; it’s an experience that we share together.”

After watching the dancers shake it to “All the Single Ladies”, by Beyonce, Hinzel heads back to the basement of the old part of the school (still known as “the dungeon” for any USS-alumni readers). This is where the writers, or “skitters,” are gathered, their desks arranged in a circle, pitching ideas and formulating skits for the show.

John Wood has been performing skits in uxperience for the past 18 years.

“I find I’ve grown as a performer each and every year,” he says. “I’m always learning things. It’s a great community to meet new people in, to meet new friends and to give back to the community.”

Many hilarious skits are underway for this year’s show, which is a party cruise entitled, Come Cruise with ux. The audience will be brought aboard a three-day, two- night cruise—complete with

a stormy night at sea, a mob dance and a sexy demo life-jacket tease. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a gut-busting night of local hilarity.

Guest Recipe:Playground Granola Bars

We pay homage to Earth Day on April 22 with this ultra easy and delicious granola bar recipe the whole family will enjoy. With our local schools practising litterless lunches, this is a great alternative to store-bought, packaged granola bars. Filled with whole grains and adaptable ingredients, such as seeds and dried fruit, it’s a super energy source with the added benefit of knowing exactly what’s inside. My daughter Kylah gobbled these up when I made them with chocolate chips for a treat.~Laura

INGREDIENTS2 cups rolled oats (not quick cook)3/4 cup packed brown sugar1/2 cup wheat germ3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon1 cup all-purpose flour3/4 cup raisins, dried berries, nuts or seeds (optional)3/4 teaspoon salt1/2 cup honey1 egg, beaten1/2 cup vegetable oil2 teaspoons vanilla extract

FROM MY MOM’S KITCHEN

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease a 9” x 13” baking pan.In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt. Make a well in the centre, and pour in the honey, egg, oil and vanilla. Mix well using your hands. Pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges. Cool for 5 minutes, then cut into bars while still warm. NOTE: Do not allow the bars to cool completely before cutting, or they will be too hard to cut.
