ABOUT PEOPLE Honors Former ADA President Honored The Indiana University School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Dietetic Internship Program (for- merly the Indiana University Medical Center Dietetic Internship Program), as part of its 90th birthday celebra- tion, and the Pediatric Nutrition Fel- lowship, as part of its 35th birthday celebration, will be honoring Arlene Wilson, internship director, 1961- 1979; past president of the American Dietetic Association, 1973; and win- ner of the Copher Award, 1987. Ber- nice Hopp and Ada Marie Van Ness, longtime preceptors for the Dietetic Internship Program, will also be rec- ognized. Obituary Alice (Eugenia Proctor) “Jean” Anderson, MS, RD, December 2007, was an ADA Member since 1943, and member of the Maryland Dietetic Asso- ciation. Anderson earned a degree in institutional management from the University of Alabama in 1942, and completed a dietetic internship at Walter Reed Medical Center in Wash- ington, DC, in 1943. She earned a Mas- ter’s degree in Institutional Manage- ment from the University of Maryland in 1976. Over a period of 29 years Anderson held various positions in the Department of Dietetics at St Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD, culminat- ing as director of Dietetics. She retired in January 1991. Honorary ADA Member Samuel J. FomonPassesSamuel J. Fomon, MD, was professoremeritus of the University of Iowa De-partment of Pediatrics. He graduatedwith honors from Harvard College in1945 and earned a medical degreefrom the University of Pennsylvaniain 1947. He completed his residency inpediatrics at the Children’s Hospitalof Philadelphia, was a research fellowat the Children’s Hospital ResearchFoundation in Cincinnati, and servedas a captain with the US Army Medi-cal Services at the US Army Hospitalin Fort Dix, NJ. Fomon then began hiscareer at the University of Iowa Col-lege of Medicine in 1954, starting asan assistant professor and eventuallyadvancing to director of the interna-tionally recognized Infant MetabolicUnit, which later became the Divisionof Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics.Following his retirement, this unit

was renamed the Samuel J. FomonDivision of Pediatric Nutrition. Inaddition to his duties in pediatrics,he became director of the Universityof Iowa Graduate Program in Nutri-tion, and in 1993 became professoremeritus.

During his tenure at the Univer-sity of Iowa, Fomon wrote many ar-

ticles for professional journals andchapters for books, but he is bestknown for his own book, Infant Nu-trition, considered the definitivebook on the subject. Fomon also re-ceived numerous awards, includingthe Borden Award from the Ameri-can Academy of Pediatrics in 1966,the McCollom Award in 1979, andthe Bristol-Myers Squibb/MeadJohnson Award for distinguishedachievement in nutrition research in1992. In 1986, the Midwest Societyof Pediatric Research created theFounders Award, which honors a se-nior investigator of the organizationwho has made a significant contribu-tion to medical literature and fos-tered pediatric medical research inthe Midwest. The award has sincebeen renamed the Fomon-PetersonFounder’s Award. He was named anhonorary member of the AmericanDietetic Association in 1985.

Niedert Becomes First RD to ChairProfessional and Technical AdvisoryCommitteeKathleen C. Niedert, MBA, RD, wasnominated and appointed to the of-fice of Chair for the Joint Commis-sion Long Term Care Professionaland Technical Advisory Committee(PTAC). Niedert will serve as therepresentative leader of the LongTerm Care PTAC for the next 2years (2008-2009). She has activelyrepresented her long-term care pro-fessional association on the JointCommission PTAC for the last 2years. Kathleen is the first regis-tered dietitian appointed as PTACChairperson representing the Amer-ican Dietetic Association.

The Professional and TechnicalAdvisory Committees (PTACs) arean integral part of the Joint Com-mission’s advisory structure. Byrepresenting the views of a diversegroup of professional organizationsand other interests and by provid-ing expert advice, PTAC members

assist the Joint Commission in thedevelopment and refinement ofstandards, elements of perfor-mance, and survey processes. Inaddition, each PTAC provides ob-servations regarding environmen-tal trends, educational needs, andother important issues facing eachof the fields in which the JointCommission offers accreditationservices. The value of the PTACsstems from the diversity of perspec-tives and the discussion and debatethat occurs at the PTAC meetings.In the final analysis, PTAC mem-bers are expected to be proponentsof their respective bodies of knowl-edge to the Joint Commission, andproponents of the Joint Commis-sion to their constituents.

In addition to the Long Term CarePTAC, there are five others: Ambu-latory Care PTAC, BehavioralHealth Care PTAC, Home CarePTAC, Hospital PTAC, and Labora-tory PTAC. Each PTAC will:

1. Provide advice and make recom-mendations to the Joint Commis-sion regarding new or revised stan-dards, elements of performance,and survey processes.

2. Provide advice as to the educa-tional needs of the field and offersuggestions concerning the devel-opment of new education pro-grams, publications, and other me-dia.

3. Provide information and advice re-garding current or anticipated de-velopments in the field which mayhave standards or survey processimplications.

4. Provide a representative to partic-ipate in meetings of the Standardsand Survey Procedures (SSP) Com-mittee.

5. Serve as a resource for appointeesto accreditation decision AppealHearing Panels, as described inJoint Commission accreditationmanuals.
