Application Details Research and Development Minigrants for 2017-2018: Application Review Proposal Summary: The overarching goal of this project is to introduce undergraduate students to multidisciplinary research in online social networks (OSN). OSN research is inherently multidisciplinary, which draws upon theories from social science, or how end-users interact within OSNs, and computer science, or how OSNs can effectively represent and communicate information to end-users. In line with CI’s mission, this minigrant provides the opportunity to bridge disciplines and allow students from multiple majors to work on analyzing existing OSN data and design new OSN features. Additionally, this proposal specifically seeks students from multicultural backgrounds, which will allow for a better exploration of the socio-technical factors that affect technology adoption. Specifically, this project can be broken down into four phases. In Phase 1, students will analyze existing online academic conversations extracted from undergraduate online discussion-boards at CI. These conversations will be analyzed for pattern extraction and a social network analysis will be performed focusing on factors such as quality and sentiment. This social network analysis will be used as input for Phase 2, which will focus on the development of a new OSN design component as informed by Phase 1. Phase 3 involves implementing the Phase 2 design in an existing OSN platform and incorporating it into the Spring 2018 section of COMP342, a course that is cross-listed with Sociology and Communication. Phase 4 involves measuring the impact of the new design in an educational setting and reporting the results at appropriate peer-reviewed academic outlets.
