Melaar is a distributor of Graco products in the region whose range includes pumps, valves and related products designed to control the flow of lubricants such as oils, greases and liquid food products. A substantial proportion of sales will continue to come from the production of high added-value pumping systems, which are similar in concept to actuated valve packages, but the combined range will also help open new doors to markets and customers. The company intends that it will operate as a separate product unit within FCX Australia and will be headed up by Phillip Butterworth, Melaar's existing Chief Executive. Concentric opens purpose-built factory in India for oil and water pumps news business Davey Products Pty Ltd, the Australian designer and manufacturer of water pumps and systems for rural, metropolitan, industrial, pool, and spa markets has acquired the New Zealand-based Contamination Control business. Contamination Control manufactures and supplies a range of water treatment products for domestic, rural, industrial and commercial applications in the New Zealand market. The business includes urban and rural households, large dairies, breweries and food processors, municipal water supply utilities and commercial offices. Its product range covers a wide spectrum of water treatment technologies including cartridge filtration and ultra-violet disinfection. Davey is currently the distributor for Contamination Control's Steriflo range of ultra violet water treatment systems in the Australian market. The acquisition offers the potential of a larger market share through a more comprehensive range of water treatment technologies, in addition to Davey's established dealer networks and key accounts in Australia and in its established export markets. Davey Products buys Contamination Control Concentric has opened a new purpose-built factory in Pune (formerly Poona), India where it will manufacture and assemble oil and water pumps for medium and heavy diesel engines. The new complex is equipped with modern CNC equipment, including 14 lathes, 15 vertical machining centres and four special-purpose machines. Concentric commenced operations in India in 1999 and although it is known as an international supplier to truck and construction industries, it also manufactures, lubrication pumps for transmissions and compressor, fans, impellers and associated equipment. Following the opening of the Indian facility, Concentric Pumps will continue to manufacture at its other locations in Birmingham, UK and Itasca, Illionis, USA. Birmingham will remain the group centre of design, development and engineering and recently, the company commissioned a Kira CNC machining centre to form the core of a new dedicated manufacturing cell. David Woolley, managing director of Concentric pumps commented, "We have a rolling programme of investments at all our plants. This reflects the continuing growth in demand from our partners around the world." Voith Siemens Hydro reports a successful 2003/2004 fiscal year. New orders came to 680 million, representing an increase of 15%. Sales for 2003-04 dropped again slightly because of long invoicing periods for major projects. The figure for this period was 466 million. The market for hydropower plants continues to unfold along very positive lines. The global market for electromechanical equipment, with a steady annual average volume of around 3 billion per year leaped to 4.5 billion in the period under review, largely fuelled by the booming market in China. Against this background, Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation saw orders received jump to a new all-time high in the history of the joint-venture company (founded in 2000). According to plan, year-on-year sales dropped owing to the low level of orders in hand at the beginning of the period and to very long project run times in some cases. The R8-million order is for three 1600mm single-stage vertical turbine pumps weighing 17 tons each. The contract is for a US project management company and are to be installed as part of a pumphouse refurbishment project at a dam 200 km north of Basra in southeast Iraq, where they will replace pumps more than 30 years old. The pumps can deliver 4000 litres per second at a head of 20 m and are driven by 1300 kW motors. Standard materials were used throughout, with cast-iron bowls and stainless shafts and impellers. One of the constraints overcome by APE's engineers was the need to fit the pumps within existing sumps at the pumphouse and line up the units to existing pipework. Fabrication was altered to meet this requirement, and special bases constructed to fit existing foundations. Sales director Dave Murphy commented that APE was able to deliver in 22 weeks against competitors’ lead times of 40-45 weeks.
