AP Spanish Language Syllabus  Course Overview 

The AP Spanish Language course is conducted completely in Spanish.  We encourage all students throughout their Spanish studies to practice the target language consistently with their teachers and peers. They should be able to use the Spanish language to:  

• Understand conversations, lectures, oral presentations, newspapers, instructions,  Internet articles, and short stories. • Express themselves orally by convincing, arguing, inquiring, and describing. • Express themselves well in a variety of styles, using different strategies for different audiences. 

 Course Outline 

To teach the AP Spanish Language Course, our school uses Repaso (McGraw Hill) and Triángulo (Wayside) as the core materials. Repaso provides students with a very thorough grammar review and practice. Brief explanations are offered in class when needed, and students work regularly to complete activities at home and in class as needed.  The tests that accompany each chapter of the textbook are given as take­home assessments.  While a strong command of grammar is essential for communicative functions, we use class time for students to interact with each other and with authentic materials. 

Triángulo provides students with extensive vocabulary building and recycling, and a wide selection of materials taken from authentic sources, presented in the same format as the AP Spanish Language Exam.  We use the essay topics provided in Triángulo to write one practice essay every three weeks. Students peer edit each others’ work, make revisions, and 

submit the final essay for a grade, based on AP Scoring Guidelines. We also use the multiple­choice listening and reading comprehension practice as well as other free­ response sample prompts.  The use of Triángulo allows for tremendous interaction in the classroom, language building and usage opportunities, and practice with the item types on the AP Spanish Language Exam such as paragraph completions and informal speaking.  

Holt Advanced Spanish AP Language Preparation Workbook and Barron's AP Spanish 2007 have been added to give students listening and writing practice in line with the 2007 revisions in the AP Spanish Language Exam.  We utilize these resources to practice integrating all four language skills.

For our semester exams we use somewhat shorter mock AP Spanish Language Exams using multiple­choice items from past released exams, and creating free­response questions that are similar in type and difficulty as those for the AP Exam. Students also respond to one essay question related to readings used during the semester. Later tests are administered in the format of the AP Exam in the weeks just prior to the May AP Exam date, as a way to prepare students for what is to come.   First Semester  Unit Chapters from Repaso Chapters from Triángulo

An audio or video source is selected and students are given a theme such as medio ambiente, salud, telecomunicaciones, deportes. At the beginning of the year, students are allowed to listen more than once to an auditory stimulus, and may even be provided with a written script for longer pieces in order to scaffold students’ comprehension. Later in the year, the audio prompt is not replayed, nor are students provided with printed text. The goal is always to listen for controlled information, taking notes. Students can be asked to outline the information, complete grids, or use graphic organizers, learning to extract details versus main ideas.  After listening, students work in pairs to share what they believe is the overall theme, and they are required to provide two to three specific details from the listening that support their answer. Later, students apply this strategy individually when using audio or video sources as inputs for both the essay and formal speaking sections of the AP Exam. Listening assessments are done several times a week.  Students listen to formal and informal recordings then they answer multiple choice questions based on what they heard. Sources for authentic listening activities:

 Reading Skills

During the year, we read and discuss in Spanish the following literary excepts.  Students learn vocabulary and other linguistic features through reading and class discussions and they continue to improve writing skills by writing an essay comparing the works of each author after reading.  

The following short stories will be used:

After reading the short stories, students take multiple choice tests to assess their comprehension.

Students also are assigned independent weekend reading.  Students read and summarize articles, short stories or contemporary literary excerpts in Spanish and keep a running list of new vocabulary.    Timed multiple choice tests are given after they have read to help prepare the students for the timing of the AP reading sections.

Additionally, students use authentic reading sources and engage in the same 

type of synthesis activity as described above in the Listening Skills section, (read, summarize, share aloud with group, etc.).

  Writing Skills 

During the first semester using written sources such as newspapers, magazines or short stories, the students identify and underline two to three main points/concrete details. Next, students paraphrase in writing, in their own words, these details. In groups of three, students orally compare summaries to assess their comprehension of the text. As students work to prepare an essay every three weeks, their ability to synthesize the audio and textual input sources improves.  Gradually they are able to recognize cultural elements in the texts.  They are to write a formal, well­organized analytical or persuasive 200­word essay on a topic provided.  At the beginning of the year they have limited use of reference materials but are allowed to use dictionaries less as the year progresses. 

During the second semester, students read several related articles and listen to a related recording.  They then write a formal essay modeled on the AP format in reaction to a personal, academic, cultural or social issue addressed in the recording and the readings.  Throughout the year we use peer evaluation to help the students improve their final product. Final essays are assessed using AP scoring guidelines.

Throughout the year, students make journal entries of 1 page in length. They are provided with a short article taken from an authentic source on a controversial topic. They are required to read the article and in their journals, write their opinions—pro or con—about what they have read, making sure that they cite some part of the article as evidence.

To give students the opportunity to practice different styles of writing, students' formal and informal writing is periodically assessed.  At least once every three weeks students have 10 minutes to read a question and write the response in the form of a letter, postcard or an email using language that is grammatically and semantically accurate.  This written correspondence will be formal sometimes and informal others.  Students decide based on the linguistic cues in the prompt the appropriate style and formality of the writing.

Speaking Skills    

In order to provide an opportunity for students to integrate their skills and to practice interacting with a native speaker, students are assigned a conversation partner and are to meet with them approximately once per month.  Conversation with native or near native speakers of Spanish is essential for those who have not had the opportunity for travel to Spanish speaking countries. Students have topics and are to prepare questions prior to the meetings.  After the meetings, students share with the class what they learned.  Differences in word choice and structures that are specific to the countries and cultures represented are addressed in class. Speaking face to face with a native speaker of Spanish who is not a language instructor is invaluable.  This helps students learn about the culture of Spanish speaking people.  Students share with the class what they learned from their conversation partner.  Our conversation partners help to assess our students' comprehension and fluency by completing a communicative ability evaluation checklist after the meeting.  One of the assignments for their meetings with their conversation partners is to practice the format of the simulated conversation.  Whenever they meet with their conversation partner, the student initiates, maintains and closes a conversation on a directed topic but during the second semester, the student is a given sample outline and practices the conversation, timing the responses and tape recording the conversation.  The tape recording is then assessed using the AP scoring guidelines for speaking.

Students are also assigned cultural topics to research and present to the class orally.  Students describe and present information with grammatical control and good pronunciation in an oral presentation of two or three minutes. Each student also participates daily by preparing a question of the day and participating in the daily discussions.  More formal debates or discussions on topics that correspond with assigned material are also assigned.  During these debates, students express opinions based on research and formulate 

questions.

Since the class is conducted in Spanish, students are required to speak in Spanish and are graded on their participation.
