Biographical Information

1. Senator Mikulski is 72, born July 20, 1936 in Baltimore.

2. Senator Mikulski earned her B.A. at Mt St. Agnes College in 1958. She went on to earn a Mastersdegree in social work from the University of Maryland in 1965.

3. Senator Mikulski has never been in any branch of the military.

4. Senator Mikulski has had numerous awards and recognitions. To name a few, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Arthritis Foundation, the National Humanitarian HealthcareAward by the National Patent Advocate Foundation, and the Public Service Award byEmergency Nurses Association in 2004.

5. Senator Mikulski has no children and has never been married.

6. Senator Mikulski was the first Democratic woman elected to the United States Senate to hold aseat not previously held by her husband.

Professional Experience

1. Senator Mikulski worked as a social worker for the Baltimore Department of Social Servicesfrom 1965 to 1970, as a chairman for the DNC Delegate Selection Committee in 1972, and as anAdjunct professor at Loyola College from 1972 to 1976.

4. Senator Mikulski was first elected to the Senate as a junior senator in 1976. In 1986, she waselected as a senator in the House.

5. Senator Mikulski is currently serving her fourth term as a senator in the House.

Senate Work

1. In her first term, Senator Mikulski won a seat on the House Appropriations Committee. Later,she became chairman of a subcommittee. She is currently ranking Democrat on the Commerce,Justice and Science Subcommittee.

2. Senator Mikulski is currently ranking Democrat on the Commerce, Justice and ScienceSubcommittee. She is also the Senates chief superintendent of the space program.

3. Senator Mikulski has a tendency to vote far to the left and so votes yes on liberal issues suchas the support of Roe v. Wade and the ban on assault weapons while she votes no on conservativeones such as President Bushs tax cuts and the ban on same -sex marriage.

4. Senator Mikulski, having been a social worker and the daughter of immigrants, has deep rootswith immigrant and urban America. During her time as a social worker in Baltimore, she formedgroups within the community to stop a highway from being built in Highlandtown. SenatorMikulski is also an enthusiast for space exploration and supports the continued use of the Hubblespace telescope and an eventual mission to Pluto.
