Beechwood Continuing Care experienced another strong year in 2017. Thanks to the commitment, dedication, and compassionate care provided by all staff, ourcommunities are providing more services to more people of Western New York eachand every day. We look forward to building on this success and touching more livesin the year ahead.

Asbury Pointe Independent Living Retirement CommunityThe apartment occupancy rate has increased each of the last four years at Asbury Pointe and

was 98% in 2017. The list of individuals and couples interested in making Asbury their new homecontinues to grow. Last summer was our first with all of the new flowers and plantings in fullbloom along with the recently expanded outdoor walking path and footbridge.

What a beautiful experience for everyone at Asbury Pointe – and all visitors to the BCC campus.

Blocher Homes Assisted/Enhanced Living CommunityConsistent with Asbury Pointe, the total suite/room occupancy

rate increased at Blocher Homes again last year. The homelikeappeal and sense of community is stronger than ever at Blocher.Recent renovations to the common areas located throughout the buildinghave given residents multiple social gathering destinations to enjoy with eachother, family, friends and guests. As part of the benefits of our continuum, many Asbury residents have seamlessly transitioned over to Blocher when they found they could no longer live independently and needed more assistance. Happily, they not only renewed friendships with former Asbury residentswho resided at Blocher, but developed new friendships as well.

The Enhanced Assisted Living Residence (EALR) program operated at almost 100% occupancy in2017. This special program – certified by the Department of Health – allows for the enrolled residentto receive a higher level of assistance and monitoring at Blocher. This “enhanced” level of service and carecan only be provided at an assisted living facility that has obtained the EALR certification, and is yet another reasonwhy the Blocher Homes living experience is so unique.

Beechwood Homes / Health Care CenterThe average daily occupancy rate was 97% in 2017. That is a remarkably high percentage especially considering

the fact that there were over 700 new resident admissions to the health care center last year. This annual admissionnumber includes those individuals who chose Beechwood for long-term skilled nursing care, hospice care or short-term rehabilitation.

The collaborative model for providing end of life care practiced on Hospice Buffalo Wells House since 2013 wasexpanded in 2017 to include the provision of Hospice Respite Care. In 2018, the plan is to further expand the Wells House program of services with the development and implementation of an advanced palliative care program.

Renovations continue on the new medical office building being constructed on the north side of the Beechwoodproperty. For those already familiar with the buildings and traffic pattern on campus...when you enter the Beechwood property from Millersport Highway you’llturn left before the main entrance traffic circle to Beechwood Homes and the newmedical office building is located just after the designated entrance to HospiceBuffalo Wells House. The medical office space will also be accessible from withinBeechwood. A rear entrance to the medical suite is located right off the Commonshallway that adjoins the West Village and East Village buildings of BeechwoodHomes.

The medical office building will be leased to a group of local physicians. Dr. William Healy is affiliated withMDVIP, a national network of primary care physicians delivering personalized, patient-centered medicine with anemphasis on wellness programs. Dr. Matthew Antalek, Dr. Jeffrey Frost, Dr. James Swiencicki, and Dr. Jeffrey Martinezof Internal Med ID Associates, LLC specialize in internal medicine including wound care and the treatment of infectious diseases.

The medical office is scheduled to be fully renovated and open to see patients this spring.

Beechwood’s strategic objective to be an increasingly critical provider of special care services will continue in2018. Affiliations with other health care organizations is crucial to our future. Gaining immediate access to specialists needed to successfully provide more medically complex, post-acute care in a homelike setting for all will extend and strengthen Beechwood’s presence in the ever-changing healthcare community in WNY.

Very exciting!

Dr. Bill Thomas’ “ChangingAging Tour”In September, Beechwood, together with the Amherst Senior Center, hosted world renowned aging specialist

Dr. Bill Thomas and his ChangingAging Tour.Blending medical science, storytelling and live music The ChangingAging Tour

shatters our culture's damaging myths about aging. Audiences were treated to twonon-fiction theater performances: the paradigm shifting Disrupt Dementia and hissignature show, Aging: Life’s Most Dangerous Game.

Disrupt Dementia is a first-of-its kind event inviting people living withdementia and their allies to experience a new vision for living with cognitivechange. Life’s Most Dangerous Game featured original music, storytelling, poetryand groundbreaking insights on aging and care. The mixed-media performancebegan with a light-hearted look at just how “crazy” our culture’s perspective onnormal human aging can be and then asks: “What if we all lived in a world that saw aging not as a process ofdecline but rather as the entree to life’s most dangerous game?”

“Aging can be reimagined as a vivid and enlivening process that presents us with extraordinary risks, andrewards,” Dr. Thomas says. “So, how are we supposed to play this most dangerous of all games? What will winningand losing look like?”
