GayleSteeleGayle began doll making in 1988 in Sydney.  On moving to Canberra with the Air Force in 1994, she counted herself lucky to ‘do dolls’ with Pat Blyth on a weekly basis.  Under Pat’s encouragement, a love of antiques developed and in 1995 Gayle commenced workshops with the Doll Artisan Guild achieving an Award of Excellence in 2011.   In 1996 Gayle began making leather bodies for seminars and Porcelain and Leather Crafts was registered as her business.  The business developed through word of mouth and attendance at Doll Shows and Fairs in Sydney and Melbourne.   Initial products were Leather Bodies, Greenware and some Dolls.  Anything that she thought could be sold and might help fill the table was fair game! Filling a 6’ table was a real challenge in those days. Over the years Gayle’s appreciation of antique dolls has grown but realising that most of the desire only ended in drooling, she collected Antique Reproduction Molds as a poor replacement.  There are now over 350 dolls on offer as greenware, bisque and finished dolls.  As Porcelain and Leather Crafts has developed, Gayle’s experience, passion for authenticity and exposure at Doll Fairs identifies her as one of the premier doll makers of today. Following a trip to Europe in 2012, some antique Kling dolls were acquired, one of which is now offered as a workshop to Convention Delegates.

On behalf of the Organising Committee it is my very great pleasure to welcome you to the DAG Supported Convention and the Sydney International Doll Show and DAG Qualified Competition, in Sydney, Australia on the 27th April – 1st May 2016. We are very excited to be bringing you this Doll Artisan Guild Supported event – “Something Old…Something Blue”.

We have planned a really exciting and informative program for your enjoyment. Our principal guest speaker is world renowned and much esteemed reproduction doll maker, DAG Instructor and Educator, Sheryl Williams. Sheryl will be presenting the lovely Convention Doll. And for the first time outside the USA Sheryl will lecture on the highly awaited Huret doll, which will be released at the DAG Convention in Chicago in October 2015. Her presentation will include techniques for reproducing authentic clothing for this doll.

Australia’s own Catherine Mather will also be in attendance to talk about and show us her fabulous creations. As a special treat for delegates, Catherine will be unveiling her latest creation, a beautiful bride dressed in 1920s style costume to be released at the Convention. Catherine’s artful sewing techniques and attention to detail will make this of interest to modern as well as antique reproduction doll artists.

In keeping with the theme of the Convention, the Cavalcade of History and Fashion will give us a delightful taste of sixty years of bridal fashions, 1880 – 1930. They will follow this with something that often followed weddings in Victorian times – ‘the Christening’. This is a marvellous opportunity to see the clothing of yesteryear up close and in detail, an invaluable tool when it comes to the costuming of both antique and antique reproduction dolls of the period. And yes, there will be more opportunities to purchase their magnificent laces.

Yet another exciting first at this Convention – formerly only offered at DAG Conventions in the US, the Crystal Award will be available for those entrants in the doll competitions who have previously won top DAG awards such as the Millie, the Magge or the Aurora.

As well as other delightful surprises such as the Delegate gifts, including the souvenir Convention Doll mould, some fabulous workshops have been devised and are on offer exclusively to Delegates. These include both the 3 hour workshops and shorter 1 ½ hour workshops. Don’t forget the splendid Celebration Banquet at which the top award winners will be announced, and the High Tea for the DAG School of Doll Making Graduation Ceremony.

We certainly hope that this Convention will be a very special gathering where like-minded doll makers and doll enthusiasts can come together and celebrate the world of dolls that we all love. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting many new ones. I wish you all a wonderful time at the Sydney Convention.

Sheryl WilliamsSheryl Williams needs no introduction to doll makers here in Australia. A DAG travelling instructor, Doctor of Dollmaking and Millie winning doll artist, she enjoys sharing her knowledge and has authored many articles for Dolls Beautiful, Doll Artisan, Doll Crafter, Doll Costuming, Doll Pro and Doll News magazines. She is a Doll Artisan Guild Senior Judge with a special interest in doll competition. An active member of the United Federation of Doll Clubs (UFDC), she is in demand for lectures, seminars and workshops for their national conventions, as well as many other Doll events around the world.

We are so fortunate that Sheryl has agreed to take the time out of her very busy schedule to be our special guest presenter and DAG Representative at the ‘Something Old..Something Blue’ DAG Supported Convention in Sydney 2016. She will be unveiling and presenting the Convention Doll to the delegates and will speak about the doll’s very interesting history and her costuming. Given her interest in the authentic costuming of antique and reproduction dolls, Sheryl will also share with us her knowledge on this subject with respect to the costuming of other antique dolls and antique reproductions, predominantly the Huret doll.

Sheryl is a firm believer in education. She travels extensively teaching doll making, costuming seminars and workshops around the world. While here for the Convention she will also teach a workshop at the convention as well as two doll making seminars.

Catherine MatherOne of Australia's leading doll artist for over 25 years, Catherine's observation of the human form translates into expressive full porcelain figures of women and children. Dressed in historical era costumes and accessories created by Catherine, from soft natural fibre wigs to exquisite leather and silk fitted shoes, Catherine’s skills are evident in the finish and creativity of each doll.

At the 2016 DAG Supported Convention Catherine will present: “The Bride Wore…..”, a digital presentation looking back at 100 years of bridal fashion and the trends that depict each era. Each of the wedding gowns featured in the charming slide show has a

story and a connection to our past, and offers the bridal gowns we make for our dolls, something old, something new and something borrowed too!

Catherine will unveil a new Lady Doll at the Convention and explain how these images have influenced her latest doll design. As you view the images you will be given an insight into how the doll’s bridal gown was created.

The Cavalcade of History and FashionBustle to Bias Brides: 1880-1940

“Bustle to Bias Brides”, presented by The Cavalcade of History and Fashion, is a fascinating journey through 60 years of bridal fashions and more. It focuses on the period between 1880 and 1940. These 60 years saw enormous changes in fashions which is reflected in the wedding gowns of their day.

This is an opportunity to examine historical gowns and accessories as well as hearing snippets from the lives of the original wearers of these gowns. You will hear tell of some of the etiquette and social history of the different decades as you view these original gowns from the Cavalcade’s vast collection.

Celebrating a ChristeningBaptism through the ages has held great importance in celebrating a new life for social and religious beliefs and to announce another generation. Christening gowns, dresses or robes became special for these occasions and followed fashion as life changed, mostly due to the Industrial Revolution.

This presentation by The Cavalcade of History and Fashion will feature many gowns which tell the story of the development of baptismal gowns from early times through the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. All these gowns come from the Cavalcade’s wonderful collection of Infants’ wear.

The truth is that I have always loved dolls, but did not discover the art of making porcelain dolls till just after having a little daughter (who is now 28 years old).

Since then I have entered competitions, won the ‘Millie’ and ‘Maggie’, taught and been appointed as an Instructor with the Doll Artisan Guild of Dollmaking. My backgrounds of teaching Textiles & Design, sewing, plus painting watercolours, were a perfect groundwork to gain the skills necessary to make the art of porcelain dollmaking practical. My love of research, theatre, the arts and dance, are also a constant source of inspiration for my projects – my passion – porcelain dollmaking.

In 1986 after moving from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast I was looking for a hobby and to meet people, so answered an advertisement for porcelain doll classes. From the beginning I knew I had found what I was looking for and in 1987 I commenced the Doll Artisan Guild Apprenticeship program. At that time my mentor was Mary Vlasack who introduced porcelain doll making to Queensland after making contact with Rolf Ericksen.I continued to have a desire to expand my knowledge and expertise in doll making so engaged in whatever educational programs, seminars and workshops I could attend. I gained my Masters in Dollmaking in 1993 and Grandmasters in 1997. Over the years I have met some wonderful and like-minded ladies and it is always a joy to meet them at shows and

conventions. I have run my own studio for more than 25 years, now in Aspley (Brisbane) and import slip and source a range of other components vital for doll making. After this time I still find teaching others as enjoyable and rewarding as I did in the beginning. I have classes three days per week and continue to be overwhelmed by the progress the ladies make in their skills as doll artisans, their increased self –esteem, and the way in which they develop their confidence to hone new skills.

Of course I can’t be left out of this and continue to enjoy making both modern and antique dolls as well as other porcelain items including figurines and masks. A few years ago I completed an interior design course and have also made silver jewellery. I could describe myself as a person who is interested in anything crafty, and particularly those crafts where it is necessary to combine a range of skills to make a complete item.

I made my first doll in 1987 - I was hooked. After my first DAG seminar in 1990 it opened my eyes to a whole new world of doll making. In 2000 I was appointed a DAG instructor and with my husband, Matt, built a studio at home. I opened my own studio in 2002. Antique dolls are a passion and I enjoy every aspect of the study and research that goes into making an authentic reproduction. French fashions and their wonderful accessories are my favourites and I am always looking for the next project I can undertake. I also make jewellery and enjoy altered art, which I sometimes integrate into my doll making.Teaching doll making has also given me the opportunity to spend time at home with my beautiful children Ruby & James. I have met many lovely people along my doll journey - dolls bring so many artistic, clever and wonderful people together.

Susan's great love affair with teddy bears started in 1999 when she was still living on a farm teeming with animals, 60km from Johannesburg, in South Africa. Susan ascribes her great love for teddy bears to not having a teddy as a companion during her childhood years.

It was, however, only after attending a design course in 2006 with well-known Australian bear artist Jennifer Laing, that her dream turned into reality and the first Bearleigh bear was born.

I started doll classes in the early 90s and was hooked from the first lesson. From there I couldn’t wait to go to class every week it was so much fun and a great group of girls. It also gave me to opportunity to use all my other many and varied crafts including sewing, knitting and embroidery which I also love. I enjoy every aspect of dollmaking including pouring greenware, and have been able to collect a large number of moulds over the years enabling me to offer greenware in addition to everything to complete your doll project. In 2004 I started my own studio and found I loved teaching and seeing my students progress and produce beautiful work. I was appointed a DAG teacher in 2006 and have enjoyed teaching others the knowledge I have gained. Since then I have opened my own Doll Shop in Virginia on the north side of Brisbane and offer classes, greenware and accessories to make dolls plus finished dolls and lots more.

Gayle SteeleEmail: [email protected] P: (02) 6292 2325

Gayle began doll making in 1988 in Sydney. Over the years Gayle’s appreciation of antique dolls has grown but realising that most of the desire only ended in drooling, she collected antique reproduction moulds as a poor replacement. There are now over 350 dolls on offer as greenware, bisque and finished dolls. As Porcelain and Leather Crafts has developed, Gayle’s experience, passion for authenticity and exposure at Doll Fairs identifies her as one of the premier doll makers of today.
