London Colleges are 80%

• The average A-level or equivalent point score for Sixth Form Colleges in England is 800.1 (compared with 761.6 for school sixth forms)

• Nationally, nearly one-third of A-level students study at a College

• Nationally, 44% of those achieving a Level 3 qualification by age 19 do so at a College

• 34% of vocational qualifications in London in 2008/09 were awarded via Colleges; 9% were awarded through employers

• The three most popular qualifications taught in London Colleges at Level 4 and above are: NVQ in Accounting; Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages; Award in Preparing to Teach in the LifeLong Learning Sector

• 33% of Colleges in London have Beacon Status

Satisfaction/standards• 92% of London Colleges

inspected in 2008/09 were judged satisfactory or better by Ofsted for the quality of their provision; in 54% of London Colleges it was good or outstanding

• 92% of London Colleges were judged satisfactory or better for their overall effectiveness; with almost half being good or outstanding

• Nearly two-thirds of people say their local College has a good reputation for the quality and range of courses it provides

• 90% of students are fairly, very or extremely satisfied with the quality of teaching in Colleges

• Nearly two-thirds of large employers that train their staff do so through a College

• 85% of employers training through a College are satisfied with the service provided

• Of the 75 best public sector employers listed by the Sunday Times, 20 are Colleges

Social mobility• Ethnic minority students

make up 45% of learners in London Colleges compared with 31% of the population of London

• 81% of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students in London study at a College

• 45,000 London College students are aged over 60

• 55% of those in receipt of an Education Maintenance Allowance in London study in a College
