THE FAMILY THAT PRAYS TOGETHER…The Effective Christian Education Study by the Search Institute found that family religiousness was the most important factor in faith maturity.

Of the two strongest connections to faith maturity, family religiousness is slightly more important than lifetime exposure to Christian education. The particular family experiences that are most tied to greater faith maturity are the frequency with which an adolescent talked with mother and father about faith, the frequency of family devotions, and the frequency with which parents and children together were involved in efforts, formal or informal, to help other people. Each of these family experiences is more powerful than frequency with which an adolescent sees his or her parents engage in religious behavior like church attendance and discussing their faith.

VOTERS’ GUIDE:The Virginia Catholic Conference has created a Voters’ Guide for upcoming General Assembly elections to help voters identify contested races and engage their candidates on issues important to Catholics. The election is November 3. The guide can be found on the Conference website at www.vacatholic.org. The Voters’ Guide consists of a Virginia map that highlights the 60 total contested Senate and House races. It also provides a summary of the seven key themes of Catholic Social Teaching, a list of suggested questions to ask candidates, and a link to candidates’ email addresses. The Conference uses the seven themes when developing positions on various legislative proposals.

2015 RED MASS: The Most Reverend Francis X. DiLorenzo, Bishop of Richmond, and The Saint Thomas More Society invite everyone in the Richmond Diocese to join in worship and fellowship at the 32nd Annual Red Mass and Dinner on Wednesday, November 4. The Dinner will follow in the Halsey Lecture Hall at the Virginia Historical Society, across the street from Saint Benedict Catholic Church. The keynote address will be given by Ryan T. Anderson, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow in American Principles and Public Policy at The Heritage Foundation who researches and writes on marriage and religious liberty. Dinner tickets are $50 each. “CARE FOR OUR EARTH:”Learning facts like we are eating plastic at mealtime can be disturbing! Our widespread use of plastics has affected marine species resulting in death for some and also has presented health risks for humans. Its estimated that about 100,000,000 sea life creatures have died. Plastic items have ended up in our oceans; 100,000,000 tons is one figure given and they last for more than 500 years. We know that in the Pacific Ocean alone there exists a mass of plastic waste the size of Europe! That’s not the end of the story. Plastic microbeads slip through waste water treatment plants, ending up in our water bodies. These particles stay with us forever contaminating our waterways. The microbeads are found in such products as toothpaste and cleansers. Fish mistake the micro plastics for plankton consuming them as food. If we choose any form of seafood for our meals we would be eating plastic; though, minuscule amount. We will not achieve a world without plastic, but we can become discerning consumers and make intentional choices such as being careful to recycle plastic items that are recyclable. We have it within our ability to turn to a life with less waste, a life with more conscientious consumerism. Consider that changing your behavior is a prayer in itself.
