COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 42, NO. 48 FRIDAY DECEMBER 2, 2011 n the period immediately after World War II, characterized by mass production, the handmade object offered a humanizing counterpoint to the machine aesthetic. Focusing on the dynamic relationship between craft and design, the exhibition “Crafting Modernism: M i d - Century American Art and Design” at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) showcases the bold new directions taken in media and aesthetics during those post- war years. Organized by the muse- um and remaining on view through January 15, 2012, this his- toric exhibition is the fourth part of an ongoing series of shows for the The Centenary Project - the first in-depth examination of American craft in the 20th century. The first three exhibitions were presented at the Museum between 1993 and 1995. Co-curated by Jeannine Falino and Jennifer Scanlan, “Crafting Modernism” underscores the growth and transformation of American life during the turbulent 1960s through art, craft, and design. Featuring the work of more than 160 artists and design- ers, including such iconic figures as Wendell Castle, Sheila Hicks, and Jack Lenor Larsen, and lesser- known, though highly influential artists and designers like Katherine Choy, and Hui Ka Kwong, “Crafting Modernism” demonstrates through furniture, textiles, tableware, ceramics, glass, jewelry, sculpture and painting, how the period between 1945 and 1969 proved a key transitional era for American craft and design. A scholarly 360-page catalogue, published by Harry N. Abrams, accompanies the exhibition. “Crafting Modernism” is an exhibi- tion with special sig- nificance for us,” said Holly Hotchner, MAD’s Nanette L. Laitman Director. “Not only is it part of the groundbreaking Centenary Project, charting the history of modern American craft, but it also charts our own history.” The Museum of Arts and Design was originally founded in 1956 by the visionary philanthropist Aileen Osborn Webb as the ‘Museum of Contemporary Crafts.’ “At the time, it was the first museum of modern craft in the world,” says Hotchner. “Crafting Modernism: Mid- Century American Art and Design” is organized into two broad sections, each of which receives treatment on its own floor in the museum, enhanced by domestic vignettes that evoke the ‘cool’ and countercultural posture of the era. The first section addresses the early postwar years - from 1945 to the late 1950s - dur- ing which time the independent craftsmen lifestyle became a com- pelling alternative to the anonymi- ty of the corporate world. The rise of the craftsman- designer in industry and the influence of craft on modern design is explored in this section with examples in all media. Items are drawn from Reed & Barton, Knoll, and Blenko Glass, among others. The second half of the exhibition focuses on the emergence of the crafted object as a work of art that is informed by Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, ‘funk,’ and social commentary. It con- cludes with a nod to the counter- cultural strains of rock ‘n’ roll, controlled sub- stances, and the American flag in a ‘groovy’ celebration of the crafted object. While youthful men and women from all walks of life, cultures, and continents rediscovered and reinvigorated tradition- al craft media to express cultural identity, artistic innovation, and social views, young designers introduced more informal domestic interiors, which were often adorned with crafted objects, and so gave a more human face to modernism. This interplay between craft and design is discovered by visitors to the exhibit through works of tex- tile designer Dorothy Liebes; fur- niture maker George Nakashima; silversmith Jack Prip; sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi; and others. Works by design- ers who incorpo- rated craft tech- niques or aesthet- ics into more wide- scale production, such as Edith Heath, Russell Wright, and Charles and Ray Eames, are also on display. ‘Crafting Modernismand its accompanying catalogue provide a gateway to the movers and shak- ers of the modern studio craft movement,” says Jeannine Falino, the co-curator. “The exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in the aesthetics and philosophy of the era. We have combed the country to find exciting and influ- ential works, many of which have rarely been seen since midcentury.” As craft pro- grams developed and expanded in university art departments across the United States, artists like Peter Voulkos and Lenore Tawney increasingly began to con- sider the sculptural and aesthet- ic qualities of materi- als previ- o u s l y reserved for function- al objects. Their pioneering achievements bridged the traditional art-craft divide, enabling the crafted object to assert itself as an aspect of modern art. This development paralleled an increasing openness in the art world to new expres- sions and alternative media demonstrated in the works of artists like Alexander Calder. As craft entered the pub- lic realm through muse- um exhibitions and pub- lications, it added to the ongoing political and social dialogue in American art and life, serving as a repre- sentative of a counter-culture lifestyle. The scholarly 360-page catalogue published by Harry N. Abrams, contains essays, biogra- phies, a n d extended reference materials, fol- lowing the stan- dard of the previous exhibi- tions in the series. The Museum of Arts and Design explores the ‘blur zone’ between art, design, and craft today. It focuses on contemporary creativity and the ways in which artists and designers from around the world transform materials through processes rang- ing from the artisanal to the digital. The Museum’s exhibition pro- gram examines and illumi- nates issues and ideas, high- lights invention and craftsman- ship, and celebrates the limitless potential of materials and tech- niques when used by gifted and innovative artists. MAD’s per- manent collection is global in scope and focuses on art, craft, and design from 1950 to the present day. Central to the Museum’s mission is education. The Museum’s dynamic new facility features classrooms and studios for master classes, seminars, and workshops for students, families, and adults. Its Open Studios enable visitors to engage artists at work and further enhance exhibition programs. Lectures, films, performances, and symposia related to the Museum’s collection and topical subjects affecting the world of contempo- rary creation are held in the build- ing’s historic 144-seat auditorium. Located at 2 Columbus Circle in N e w Yo r k City, the Museum is o p e n Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Closed Mondays and major holidays) Also on view now at the museum is “Picasso to Koons: The Artist as Jeweler,” which runs through January 8, 2012. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERTThis Week: A Few Bargains To Look For!

Peter Swift Seibert

Three years ago, I endedup bidding at an auction inwestern Pennsylvania wherethere were a number of lots ofearly glass. The prices wereextremely reasonable and Iended up with a couple ofitems. They have languishedon a shelf for a while until thispast week when I ended uppurchasing a nice Empireworktable and so finally decid-ed to outfit the second floorhallway of the house in mid-19th century furniture. Thelead glass from the factories inWestern Pennsylvania andOhio suddenly had a newplace of honor insofar as theitems fit in nicely with the newspace.

As I was setting the glassout, I got to thinking about theearly mold blown glass thatwas produced in the middleportion of the 19th century inPennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. For collectors look-ing for a bargain, I think thishas to be one of the best areas

to collect. This glass hasall the things that a col-lector could want: quali-ty, some degree ofscarcity, and reasonablepricing.

Antique glass is oneof those collecting areasthat was incredibly pop-ular from the 1920’sonward. However, asmy old friend ElsieDoehne used to say, thedishwasher really killedoff interest because theglass could not take it. Amore likely explanationis that antique glassscares many collectors. It is fragile, and valuesare affected by condi-tion. Another issue isthat good referencebooks are hard to comeby for the subject. In theold days, everything that wasin early lead or flint glass wascalled Western Pennsylvaniajust as every piece of enam-eled glass from the 18th centu-ry was Stiegel. Today, thanksto good research, glass isunderstood to be a far morecomplex subject. That’s greatbut it makes it hard for newcollectors to build up theirexpertise.

Still, I recommend thatfolks interested in the subjectto go to the Heinz History

Center in Pittsburgh, theCorning Glass Museum inCorning New York andOld Sturbridge Village inMassachusetts to seeexamples of early glass.Study them well and thenstart your own search.

In my mind, earlyglass remains not only agreat bargain today, butalso a smart collectingchoice. While there aresome old fakes, it is anarea that is not nearly asplagued by problempieces as other collectingareas. A few smart trickscan help you learn toidentify old glass prettyreadily. My favorite is toflip the piece over and tolook at the wear ring onthe bottom of the piece. The wear ring consists of

Spaun celebratedwith an impressive exhibition ofvessels he designed for produc-tion in the new technique inVienna, Loetz’s closest and mostreceptive marketplace. Within afew years of the exposition, theLoetz-Witwe works becameregarded as one of the finest andmost progressive producers ofArt Nouveau glass in the world.

AUCTION SALE BILLS

Go to any auction withcolorful art glass, glass ani-mals, or glass jewelry, andyou’ll hear the word“Murano” being tossedaround like cheap confetti. One thing I’ve learned is thatjust because glass jewelry isbeautiful and has sparklingfoil accents, or just becauseart glass has striking colorsand artistic flair doesn’t meaneither is Murano. But manyauctioneers make thatassumption, as do their bid-ders.

Fake, replica, and look-alike Murano glassware is outthere in abundance, and whilesome of these pieces are moreeasily identifiable, newerfakes are getting better andare therefore harder to spot, says Charlie Rowan, ownerof Fossilfly Imports(www.fossilfly.com). Animporter of fine Murano andItalian glass and pottery, overthe years Rowan has estab-lished one-on-one relation-ships with Murano artists andis an expert in the identifica-tion of authentic Murano andother Italian glass. His“Murano Glass and ItalianPottery Forums”(http://www.fossilfly.com/Forums/) give collectorsan opportunity to sharetheir knowledge andreceive input fromother experts onthe authentici-ty of piecesthey acquire.

Murano glass is amuch older product thanmany people realize and has afascinating history. Back inthe 13th century, Italian glasswas made in Venice, but thefactories would frequently

burn down, a major problemin a populated city. In 1291,the mayor of Veniceordered that allglass factoriesmust move to theisland ofMurano inorder toremovet h ethreat off i r efrom the city. As aresult, the islandbecame filled withfactories makingglass. So whileplenty of glass ismade in Veniceand other areasof Italy, noglass piece canbe truly called “Muranoglass” unless it’s made by oneof the factories in Murano.

Rowan points out that theissue of glass being deliber-ately misidentified as Murano

is nothing new.“Sometimes labels

can be intentionallymisleading, they maysay ‘Murano Style’ orjust ‘Made in Italy,”Rowan said. “While

close, this is notby definition

M u r a n o

g l a s s .Fake Murano glass has beenaround for centuries, it’s not a

new phenomenon. The term‘à la façon de Venise’ (in theVenetian manner) was used

by glass blowerstrained in

Murano butbrought toFrance byL o u i sXIV tom a k eglass for

h i scourt.”

I t ’ salso notunheard

of to find aM u r a n olabel reap-

plied to

non-Muranoglass in an

effort to sell acheaper piece at a Muranoprice. However, buyers cancheck old and new Muranocatalogs to determinewhether the piece in questionis authentic, or they can posta photo on Rowan’s forum toget identification help fromexperts. Keep in mind thateach factory has its ownlabels, and these labelschange throughout the yearsto reflect the contemporarylook of its decade. Whilepaper labels were generallyused up to the 1970s, thedesign of the label can be aclue as to the age of the piece. You can see many good pho-tographs of various Muranolabels in the Fossilfly forums’Murano Label Library.

In each Murano factoryare glass designers, some ofwhom are quite well known.

Fooled By Fakes - Buyer Beware! by Anita Stratos

What’s In A Name - Identifying True Murano GlassMany times (but not always)these designers sign theirpieces. Since each piece isindividually signed, designers’ signatureswill never be exactlythe same. However,Rowan said he hasseen forged Muranoartists’ signaturesscratched into thebase of generic glasspieces with a carbine-tipped pen. This type offorgery is found mostlyon vintage pieces, becausenewer pieces should also be

accompanied by certificatesof authenticity, but it’s alsobeen seen on modern no-

name glass purchased atmajor United States chainstores. The Fossilflyforums have a number ofthreads dedicated to fakesignatures; these threadsare important resourcesfor buyers because theyshow the fake signatures

and explain how they dif-fer from authentic ones.

to make sure the “colors arecorrect;” however, Rowansaid this is only an advisablemethod of identification forexperienced collectors oncethey become very familiarwith a particular artist orcompany.

Rowan said that while theissue of fake Murano glass isa “huge problem,” most of itis “tourist class” glassware, with much of it being made inChina and sold in Venice. Infact, just last year, Italianpolice seized eleven millionfake Murano pieces that hadbeen made in China and werebeing sold in Venice. Some ofthe pieces had Murano labelsaffixed to them, and somewere mixed in with authenticMurano glassware. The esti-mated value of the seizurewas $16 million. The head ofVenice’s financial police,General Walter Manzon, said

he estimates that about half ofthe glass sold in Venice is noteven made in Italy, accordingto a June 25,2010 AFParticle.

ContemporaryMurano glass isrequired to beaccompanied bya certificate, but from theearly 1900sthrough the1980s, mostpieces car-ried nolabel or sig-nature, sobuyers need toknow whatthey’re lookingat; the best edu-cation is to readbooks and forums, gain a hands-onfamiliarity withauthentic Murano glass, andask questions. According to

Rowan, among the mostheavily faked pieces arepaperweights and aquariums.

In the aquariumcategory, fakes

can sometimes berecognized by mis-shapen fish, bleeding

colors, clouded glassor bubbles in the

Murano glass gen-erally isn’t reissued;

rather, a number of facto-ries may make their owninterpretations of the samedesign. None of these piecesare reissues or copies, they’resimply a continuation of adesign from another artist’s

AUCTION SALE BILLS

Marbles are essentiallyminiature works of art inglass, and the number of col-lectors who are drawn tothem just keeps on growing, said Dan Morphy, whosePennsylvania auction househas become a virtual collec-tors’ clubhouse for the spe-cialty hobby. On December 3,his company will conduct itslargest-ever offering of mar-bles - a total of 762 lots. Ashas become the custom, theevent is likely to attract athrong of collectors from sev-eral states, all keen to seewhat sorts of fresh finds havecome out of collections forthis particular sale.

“We’ve had collectorscome from as far away asCalifornia to attend our mar-ble sales,” Morphy said.“Those who can’t attend inperson - including the manyEuropeans who collect mar-

bles - are always quick tosign up for phone lines or tobid via the Internet.”

Morphy - himself a long-time buyer and seller of mar-

bles - believes the December3 event may very well grossin excess of $300,000, notingthat several marbles arepoised to reach $20,000apiece.

The renowned PaulBaumann collection is theauction’s centerpiece andcomprises the first 430 lots ofthe sale. The collection wasstarted in the summer of

1952, whenBaumann was amere five yearsold. Baumann’sparents wereantique collectorswho enjoyedprowling throughshops, but theyworried abouttheir son’s shortattention span andwanted to think ofa way to keep himoccupied. Thesolution Paul’sdad devised wasto give the boy aportion of his ownmarble collection, with instructionsto keep an eye out

for similar types of marblesduring their shopping expedi-tions.

“That was what sparked alifetime of marble collecting

and expert scholarship on thesubject,” said Morphy. “Paulwas way ahead of his time.He wrote a book about mar-bles that was released in 1969

and has been reprinted sever-al times, with 44,000 copiessold in all. That’s unheard offor what was such a narrowspecialty for so many years.”

One of the most highly

prized pieces in the Baumanncollection is a 2-1/4-inchdiameter onionskin peacocklutz marble with mica. Itsmedley of colors includespurple, orange, yellow, blue,

pink, red, green, turquoiseand baby blue; and asdescribed in the auction cata-log, it contains “largechunks” of mica and lutz. The
