rom their inception in1851, the world’s fairsshowcased, obsessed

over, and enthralledthe visiting publicwith the cutting edgeof industry, produc-tion, new materials,and methods, for cre-ating everything fromtools to jewelry, fur-niture to textiles. Indoing so, artists andmanufacturers usedbreakthrough scien-tific innovations tocreate art objects thatembodied the latestaesthetics and tech-

niques. A major co-production of CarnegieMuseum of Art in Pittsburgh and TheNelson-Atkins Museum of Art, “Inventingthe Modern World: Decorative Arts at theWorld’s Fairs, 1851-1939” assembles morethan 200 art objects from world’s fairs,remarkable not just for their common pedi-gree, but for what they represent: the heightof both science and artistry in the late 19thand early 20th centuries. Carnegie Museumof Art will supplement the traveling portionof this exhibition with a treasure trove of itsown objects from fairs, making it the largestvenue of the four-city tour, which alsoincludes the New Orleans Museum of Artand the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NorthCarolina.

“Inventing the Modern World” showcas-es objects painstakingly assembled fromEuropean and American collections. For co-curator Jason T. Busch, the exhibition repre-sents a true achievement,since “the exhibi-tion checklistc o m p r i s e sd e c o r a t i v earts unattain-able as a group inany one museum in theworld.” Co-curator CatherineL. Futter Futter adds, “Welooked at literally thousands ofdecorative arts from around theglobe…We kept refining ourchoices to find the objects thatreally spoke about innova-tion.”

The decorative artsmade for world’s fairsoften display an unusualtension: the use of tradi-tional styles as a vehiclefor progress, employing pre-viously unknown materials andmethods to craft works that evoke the aes-thetics of prior art movements. Becauseearly world’s fairs were a gathering ofnations in a less globalized time, works typ-ically exhibited a nationalistic pride - whilethey showcased the most cutting-edgecraftsmanship of a given country, they alsospurred unprecedented exchange in industri-al and artistic methods. According to LynnZelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Directorof Carnegie Museum of Art, “Inventing theModern World” embodies an inspirationalvision, showcasing inventive design thatmarries art, science, and technology in the

service of improving the humancondition.” The exhibitionhighlights this con-stant exchange,with extraordi-nary works thatdemonstrate how acertain amount ofc o m p e t i t i o n ,u l t imate ly,acceleratesthe pace ofartistic innova-tion around theworld.

Examples of newtechniques first show-cased at the fairs arecountless. The simpleforms of Leó ValentinPantocsek’s vase and ewer from around

1860, for example, belie itsinnovative genesis.

The fascina-tion with thei r i d e s c e n tsurfaces of

a n c i e n tGreek andR o m a ng l a s sp r o m p t e dmany man-ufac turersto re-createit, but it wast h eHungarian

chemist Pantocsek whosucceeded, applyingmetallic oxides to the hotglass surface to produce an

iridescent coloring. Theeffect puzzled the minds of fair-

goers at the 1862 London InternationalExhibition, as it was believed that only agecould produce the effect. And, because thefairs spurred technological exchange, thetechnique soon spread. Two decades later,Louis Comfort Tiffany applied the sametechnology to his popular Favrile line ofglassware, which will also be on display.

Pittsburgh, long a center of technologi-cal innovation, is well represented in theexhibition, notably by the WestinghouseRadio Broad-casting Panel shown at the1933 Century of Progress InternationalExposition in Chicago. Featuring a world

map with expanding cir-cles, it illustrates the cen-tral importance of the

United States,and especiallyKDKA Pitts-burgh,t h ew o r l d ’ sfirst commer-cial radio sta-tion. It reads“ R a d i oBroadcasting AsInitiated ByKDKA HasMade TheWhole World ANeighborhood -1 9 2 0 . ”Westinghouseused innova-tive materi-als to pro-mote the

company’s prod-ucts of mass com-munication, in thisinstance, Micarta - anew laminate com-posed of canvas, paper,

and fiberglass -with accom-p a n y i n g

designs in aluminum and steel, two materi-als that deeply resonate in Pittsburgh.

One of the most popular works displayedat the 1900 fair was the 1897 Five Swanstapestry designed by the German painter andprintmaker Otto Eckmann. Influenced byboth 19th-century Japanese and 15th-centu-ry German woodblock prints, Eckmann’stapestry embodiesthe cross-cul-t u r a lexchange ofthe fairs.E n h a n c e dby bold con-trasts incolor, thef l a t t e n e da n dabs t rac tedsubjects andthe mean-dering linesare renderedwith a strongg r a p h i cc o m p o s i -tion.

The 1925Paris expositionboasted a dazzlingarray of exquis-ite jewelry andluxury goods.Works fromFrench jewelryfirms such asCartier and

Boucheron were notable for their technicalvirtuosity and inventive combinations ofmaterials, colors, and new processes. Thedynamic pattern of the diamonds, rubies,sapphires, and emeralds in a bracelet byBoucheron demonstrates the firm’s progres-sive designs and metalsmithing capabilities,

illustrating historical and cross-cultural styles popular

during the early20th century. Theimpressive ArtDeco brooch from

Tiffany &Co.’s 1939

installation fea-tures an unusual

combination of emer-alds and newly fash-

ionable champagne dia-monds.

The 1925 exposition also displayedmajor innovations in glass, such as the

centerpiece and bowls by J. & L.Lobmeyr. These striking objects

showcase the technicaland aesthetic expertise

of the Austrian firm. Inwhat was known as the“Rare Earth Series,”

Lobmeyr actually incorpo-rated uranium into the

glass, causing the colors tochange under different types oflight.

A papier-mâché pianoforte andstool (1867) epitomize the remark-able inventiveness of the manufac-turers of decorative arts. Although

papier-mâché had been used in Europe formore than a century, the English firmJennens & Bettridge introduced a dazzlingarray of complex techniques. Shown at the1867 Paris fair, this instrument is made ofseemingly fragile but highly durable gluedand compressed paper pulp, applied sheetafter sheet to a wooden core. Embellishedwith an ebonized surface adorned with gild-

ing, mother-of-pearl, andpanels ofreverse-paint-ed glass withfoiled alu-minum deco-ration, thep i a n o f o r t estands out as as i g n i f i c a n tintegration ofmany decora-tive arts tech-niques.

By 1939, fairsshowcased futuristic objectsmade of new materials likePyrex, nylon, and stainlesssteel. Even so, the similaritiesbetween the 1851 and 1939fairs and the objects within

them are striking.“The objects,” according toJason Busch, “share themesthat resonate throughout‘Inventing the ModernWorld’, including technique,cross-cultural influence, andnationalistic inspiration, all ofwhich shaped the competitioninherent to the fairs.” Thelook was different, but, as theshow demonstrates, the questfor variety and difference, for

innovation and ingenuity,remained a common threadfrom 1851 through 1939.

“Inventing the ModernWorld: Decorative Arts at theWorld’s Fairs, 1851-1939”opens at the CarnegieMuseum of Art, Pittsburgh,October 13, 2012 and runsthrough February 24, 2013,

then on to the New OrleansMuseum of Art and the MintMuseum in Charlotte, NorthCarolina. A full-color cata-logue, written by internation-al scholars of 19th- and 20th-century decorativearts and co-pub-lished by SkiraRizzoli, accompa-nies the exhibition.

Staggering in its breadth,“Inventing the ModernWorld: Decorative Arts at theWorld’s Fairs, 1851-1939”evokes a time of excitingprogress, and a series ofworld’s fairs that were very different than they are today;these fairs focused squarelyon products and design,whereas post-war fairsrevolve around ideas.
