The Most Widely Read Collector’s Newspaper in The EastTRANSCRIPT
By Robert And Donna Seecof
(Note: The following is excerptedfrom “Bookends: Objects of Art &Fashion” by Robert Seecof, PhD,MD, and Donna Seecof, MSN, pub-lished by Schiffer.)
Historically, bookends werealways meant to be decorative. They were commercial productsand always responded to theprevalent styles in order to sell.Today we find bookends thatwere designed in the popularfashions of their times - Arts &Crafts style or in Art Deco stylefor example, and changes inbookend styles reflect the majorchanges in decorative art fashionsthat took place in the UnitedStates, decade by decade in thetwentieth century.
Art styles permeated societyin America to varying degrees.
American people lived withVictorian ideals and styles forgenerations and adopted themunthinkingly. The Art Nouveaustyle reached into all forms of artand design, including common-place personal belongings, andbecame a chosen way of life inEngland and Europe, with per-haps a smaller following inAmerica. Art Deco fashions andlifestyle dominated Americansensibilities and preferredlifestyle in the 1920s and 1930s.The 1940s fashions took a backseat to World War II in the UnitedStates. The 1950s, 1960s and1970s, which we now call mid-century modern style, prevailedin commercial fashions. After the
1970s, styling seemed tofragment and no single
decorative style dominated, but Arts & Crafts styling survivedthrough the entire century.
Thus, fashion dictated bookendstyles and, today, vintage bookendsdocument the fashion styles of pasttimes. Bookends did not representall of the high art styles of the 19thand 20th centuries, but they didreflect the major decorative styles.Furthermore, nearly all bookends, old or new, are sculptures, and allwere created by artists. Bookendsare a medium of decorative art andwe appreciate them as artwork tothe present day.
Bookends may be identified asto art style by a typical design, as,for example, streamlining typifiesAmerican modern in Art Deco, orthe identification may depend onsubject material that was character-istic; like, for example, oak leavesand acorns for the Arts & Crafts era.
Not only do old bookends
reflect bygone art styles, but manybookends document historicalevents as well. Some pairs com-memorate individuals and histori-cal events by directly illustratingthem. For example, a bookendshowing Charles Lindbergh’s air-plane - The Spirit of St. Louis - orhis portrait - commemorate his his-toric transatlantic flight. Otherbookends establish a timeline bychanges in their composition. Forexample, lead was used only untilabout 1915, and pressed woodymaterial and chalk were used dur-ing World War II, when metal wasdiverted to the war effort.Decorative bookends also servedas advertising leaders and tokens offraternal societies.
Today there are thousands ofdifferent pairs of bookends avail-able, but as recently as the nine-teenth century there were very few. There needed to be an evolu-tion of books before therecould be an evolution ofbookends. The printingpress was invented inthe fifteenth centuryand gave rise to booksas we know themtoday, and we can guessthere were bookends, but no bookends havebeen found fromthese earlytimes.
Finally,in the earlypart of then i n e -t e e n t hcentury,b o o k -e n d s
appeared, probablyin Eng-land, in theform we now call abookrack - a pair ofbookends connectedat their bases by asingle short shelf.Books rested on theshelf, and the book-ends prevented themfrom falling side-ways. The shelf wasmade of wood or ofmetal tubes and fre-quently fashionedfrom several piecesnested together sothat the length wasadjustable. Theseadjustable bookracksare calledbookslideso ra d j u s t a b l ebookracks. Theend pieces werefrequent-ly hingeda n d
could be folded downagainst the shelf.Bookracks and book-slides remained popularin England during thenineteenth and early partof the twentieth cen-turies, and we can stillfind them today.
Toward themiddle of then ine t een thc e n t u r y ,compul-
sory elementary educa-tion appeared in America, first in Massachusetts andthen around the country. Not onlydid books become plentiful, butcommon people were enabled toread them. Books became moredesirable symbols of culturein American homes, andbookends were producedto support and embellishthe new home libraries.
Large numbers ofbookends were producedin the United States in the
twentieth centurybecause com-
pulsory edu-c a t i o ngenerat-
ed a literate population who want-ed to own and display books.Comparatively few bookends wereproduced in England and Europe, probably because of lesser demand, and the bookends that were pro-duced were generally high-enditems. Because the overwhelmingmajority of bookends were pro-duced in the United States, book-ends can be considered anAmerican art form.
By 1916, the Sears catalog wasalready offering pairs of free-stand-ing bookends and we know thatsuch bookends were available else-
where. This cata-log illustratedb o o k e n d s
with woodenbases anduprights and
with orna-m e n t a lbrass owlspositioned
on theb a s e s .
The earlyfree-standingb o o k e n d swere called
“book rocks.”The earliest American
bookends we have seen withdocumented dates were
marked 1892 and the next earliestwere 1903, so earlier ones musthave been very rare. By the
1920s, there was a flood ofAmerican bookends in greatvariety, and bookends havebeen manufactured eversince, although bookendproduction droppednoticeably in about 1930,apparently because of theGreat Depression. Many
foundries closed dur-ing theDepression andiron bookendswere infre-quently pro-duced after-w a r d s .B o o k e n dproduct iond e c l i n e d
again duringWorld War II andonce again after
1950, when television appearedand presumably cut into the num-ber of readers.
Book-ends have been manu-factured from a large number ofdifferent materials. Metals havebeen most popular because theyare heavy, readily cast, take avariety of finishes, and aredurable.
Price is determined by all theconsiderations that usually applyto antiques and collectibles, suchas age, decorative quality, condi-tion, artist, size, art style, foundry, materials of manufac-ture and, of course, supply and
demand. Single bookendsusually sell for less thanhalf the price for a pair.Bookend prices havebeen rising, on aver-age, for the past sev-eral years. A pair ofiron butterflies by
the French artistEdgar Brandtsold for $24,000
at a Christie’s auc-tion in 2004, prob-
ably a world recordhigh price for bookends, but prices in the thou-sands are not unusualtoday.

produced for CBS TelevisionTheater “The Life and Worksof Guiseppe Verdi.” Thisaccelerated his move to NewYork television.
Once having earned hisspurs as a network televisiondirector on the New Yorkstage, he joined “The EdSullivan Show,” his first
(Continued from page 2) major TV connection in NewYork in those pioneer days oflive television. For the next20 years, working in networktelevision control roomsthroughout New York City,Jim worked on some of themost celebrated shows intelevision history; “The EdSullivan Show” (he was therewhen Bo Diddley made hisTV debut in 1955 and whenElvis Presley made his first ofthree appearances in 1956,performing “Shake, Rattle &Roll,” “Hound Dog” and“Heartbreak Hotel” to a fren-zied audience), and otherCBS shows, including “TheArthur Godfrey Show,” “The564,000 Challenge,” “What’sMy Line” and “CaptainKangaroo.” He also workedon the “Steve Allen Show” atNBC-TV and “The Price IsRight” (with original hostBill Cullen), and on ABC-TV’s “Who Do You Trust,”where Johnny Carson and EdMcMahon teamed up for thefirst time in what was tobecome their long-term rela-tionship. When Jim achievedhis goals in TV production,he moved on to Young &Rubicam, the prestigiousMadison Avenue advertisingagency, where he directedlive television commercials. He later chose to take on stillanother challenge, movingover to Y&R managementwhere he was an accountexecutive with responsibili-ties for major clients, includ-ing General Motors, Lipton,Remington, Goodyear,General Electric, Procter &
Gamble, Gulf, CluettPeabody and General Foods. In working with these nation-al accounts, he gained a life-time of experience in media, marketing, research and mer-chandising. In the course ofhis work, Jim also served as acasting director for numerousTV programs and televisioncommercials, working withthe William Morris Agency, the world’s leading talentagency for entertainers, bands and pop personalities, and with major New Yorkmodel agencies (e.g., EileenFord, John Powers) to engageactors, actresses and modelsfor various television proper-ties. Having accomplishedhis goals in New York televi-sion and advertising circlesspanning two decades, he leftthe city and moved to FairHaven (New Jersey).

May 7, 1931 - January 23, 2013A master restorer of

After conducting a similarsurvey last year, the AshefordInstitute of Antiques (a dis-
tance learning program onantiques and appraising basedin Florida), has released itslatest trending data on theantiques marketplace for2013. The survey, which isaimed at compiling the pur-chase trends of customersbuying antiques over a twelvemonth period, was broughtback this year after an over-whelming response on theschool’s website from readersrequesting more information, said Charles Green, Directorof the Institute. Green wenton to say that he was struck
by how the results seemed toresonate with readers, andthat pollsters at the Institutedecided to run the surveyagain, with a few tweaks(including doubling the num-ber of participants to over athousand), to see if there wasany measurable change fromthe previous year. “It justseemed to make sense, sinceso many of our students and
those visiting our website, were requesting it,” saidGreen.

After the sale of a Calvinand Hobbes 1986 publishedSunday comic strip, hand-colored by creator Bill

this comic book was themoment that Silver Ageended and comics lost theirinnocence,” said BarrySandoval, Director ofAuction Operations for theComics Category at Heritage.“Spider-Man and the MarvelAge of Heroes were neverquite so merry after this darkstory, which fans still talkabout, and which is still oneof the most shattering death-blows in comics. We expecttop collectors will come afterthis piece with everything
they have.”What may well be the
crown jewel of originalWatchmen art is also promi-nently featured in the auction,as Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen#1 cover art, the classic,most-recognizable image ofall the covers of the series, isexpected to exceed $100,000when it comes up for bid. (Continued on page 10)
Treasured Edition Should Bring $500,000+ In February 21-22 AuctionA CGC-graded 6.5 copy
of Detective Comics #27(DC, 1939), the first appear-ance of “The Bat-Man,” isexpected to bring more than$500,000 when it comesacross the auction block at theFletcher-Sinclair Mansion(Ukrainian Institute ofAmerica) in New York Cityon February 21-22 as the cen-terpiece of HeritageAuctions’ Vintage Comics &Comic Art Signature®Auction.
“If you’ve followed thesales in recent years of thisprime pop culture collectible, then you know that the issueis currently the second mostvaluable comic in the hobby,”said Ed Jaster, Senior VicePresident of HeritageAuctions, “behind onlySuperman’s debut in ActionComics #1. This comic hasheld down the number onespot before and it’s certainlypossible that it could returnthere. Batman is a strongercharacter than Superman in
the minds of many a fan rightnow, and has certainly been abigger box-office hit in recentyears. “Heritage famouslysold a CGC 8.0 graded copyof Detective Comics #27 for$1,075,500 in February of2010 and, last year, sold theBilly Wright pedigree copy(also graded 6.5) for$522,000.
“This particular copy isnotable for the near-completeabsence of smudging or stain-ing on the front cover,” addedSteve Borock, ConsignmentDirector at HeritageAuctions. “Of course, thecover image by Bob Kane isone of the most famous in thehistory of comics.”
An undeniably classicpiece of Silver Age comic art,John Romita’s AmazingSpider-Man #121 cover for“The Night Gwen StacyDied” is creating huge buzzwithin the collecting commu-nity, as it’s expected that itwill bring $200,000+.
“In the minds of many,
daily strip originally pub-lished on Nov. 3, 1986. It isexpected to bring $50,000+.
“This is the third time thatwe’ve had the chance to auc-tion a published piece ofCalvin and Hobbes artwork,”said Todd Hignite, VicePresident of Heritage. “Thispiece is generating just asmuch excitement with fansand collectors as the lasttwo.”

Record Prices At Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates January Glass SaleMt. Washington
Lava, originally knownas Sicilian Glass, provedto be the most desirableware at Jeffrey S. Evans& Associates’ January26 Winter glass auction, with stellar prices real-ized for several differentobjects made in thismanner. The sale tookplace at the firm’s Mt.Crawford, Virginiagallery. A bulbous-basevase done in shiny rasp-berry with multi-coloredinclusions and gilt trim, circa 1878-1880 real-ized the highest price ofthe day, $5,463. [Lot450]
Other Mt. Washing-ton Lava ware that did
well was executed in dramat-ic dark backgrounds, theideal showcase for the shim-mering inclusions. A blackbulbous vase with waistedneck and a flared-form vasewith waisted neck each soldfor $2,760, while an urn-formvase with applied handlessold for $2,300. These, too, were executed circa 1880.[Lot 454, 456 and 451,respectively]
Two items made at the
Imperial Glass Company ofOhio also realized highprices. A Free Hand line iri-descent colorless compote, with opal hanging hearts andcobalt blue rim and tall stem, previously unlisted in the lit-erature on the factory, soldfor a record price of $3,738,the second-highest price ofthe auction. Executed circa1925 and standing nearly 10inches high, the compotewent for almost four times
the estimated selling price, because it was a terrificexample, never before illus-trated, and in wonderful con-dition [Lot 476]. A Free Hand8-inch-tall vase from thesame factory and period, withunusual low handles, knownas shape FH10, sold for$2,300, also way over esti-mate. The deep marigold andapplied blue-green vase wasunusual and very attractive to

Lot 450, sold for $5,463 againstthe $2,000 to $3,000 estimate.Mt. Washington Lava / SicilianGlass Vase, extremely rare shinyraspberry with multi-colorinclusions and gilt decoration, graceful bulbous-base form, pol-ished pontil mark. Mt.Washington Glass Co. 1878-1880. 4” H. Similar examples areillustrated in Kenneth Wilson -Mt. Washington I, pp. 112-118.The catalogue note describedhow, in 1878, Mt. Washingtonintroduced its Sicilian glasswhich was made using lava orvolcanic slag. It appears thatthey discontinued the line in1880. Frederick Shirley wasgranted three patents for theproduction and design of thisglass, which today is consideredto be the first and most innova-tive art glass produced in America. Shirley went on to formulate andpatent Burmese glass in 1885, and develop Mt. Washington’s famousPeach Blow, Rose Amber, and Royal Flemish art glass lines.
many collectors. [Lot 514]A covered sugar bowl
produced by the IndianaTumbler and Goblet Co., aGreentown number 450, inthe Holly Amber pattern andgolden agate color, madecirca 1903, 6-5/8” high, soldfor $3,335. The rarity of thisbowl and cover in this color-way and pattern lead to fren-zied bidding, with the finalprice nearly ten times theestimate. [Lot 50]
Lastly among the top-selling lots, a figural glassSanta Claus miniature lampby the Consolidated Lamp &Glass Company, dating to thelate 19th century, sold for$2,100 due to its desirability.[Lot 334] Additional strongresults were realized for col-lections of toothpick holders,
tumblers, cruets, Finlay Onyxand Floridine, as well asSteuben.
The above lots were allfrom the collection of the lateRichard “Dick” and MaryAnn Krauss of Clyde, Ohio. Also featured in the auctionwere collections from NewYork, Pennsylvania andMaryland.
After the sale, Jeffrey S.Evans said, “I am extremelypleased with the auctionresults. We received our high-est number of absentee bidsfor a glass sale in the past 5years. This auction demon-strates that collectors are rec-ognizing good values in themarket and are re-enteringthe arena. The Krauss collec-tion of Imperial art glass wasunprecedented at public auc-tion and drew tremendousinterest and strong results. Itwas a great pleasure cata-
loging the collection – it gaveme a crash course on thecompany’s short-lived andfinancially unsuccessfulforay into the art glassworld.”
Overall, the sale realized$265,972, with one lot with-drawn due to a conditionissue (lot 500). The galleryreceived over 3,300 pre-auc-tion absentee bids and morethan 2,300 live Internet bidson auction day from potentialbuyers located in 15 differentcountries. In addition to thosebids, Evans and his top-notchstaff orchestrated over 200phone bids along with stiffcompetition from a seriousgroup of in-house bidders. Director, Tony Drew echoedthe sentiment and stated thatthe primary focus of thisyear’s survey was to againgauge interest in currenttrends of antiques and col-lectibles, based on sales andrequests for particular items. He stressed that while nostringent scientific formulaswere employed, and the sur-vey was informal in nature, the results were still quiteinteresting when viewed intheir entirety. “What we’reseeing is still a basic reflec-tion of last year’s poll…” saidDrew, “but on an even moremagnified level - youngerbuyers are definitely becom-ing the norm, and there seemsno doubt that all the televi-sion shows out there aboutantiques and collectibles arehaving some influence on thisdemographic.” Drew went onto say that some areas of “col-lecting” had moved up ordown a notch in the survey, but that one noticeable trend
was the move towards small-er collectibles from the 1950sand even 1960s. “Again…”said Drew, “it’s the youngerbuyers leading the way.”
If you’d like to see the fullresults from the survey con-ducted by the AshefordInstitute, you can visit theirPoll/Survey page atwww.asheford.com/2013-survey-results.html or on theschool’s website atwww.asheford.com for acomplete listing of surveyedtrends for 2013.
