AUNE | IN MEMORIAMIt is with a heavy heart that AUNE informs the Antioch community of the passing of a dedicated faculty member Dr. Teri Young, the director of the Integrated Learning program in the Education Department. Dr. Young has been affiliated with AUNE for over a decade and was the architect of the Dual Certification program in Elementary and Special Education. A passionate champion for progressive, inclusive, and humane education, she founded a wonderful small public school in Brooklyn, NY and then served as a consultant in leadership and inclusion in New York City, Vermont and New Hampshire. To us, she was a brilliant colleague and inspiring teacher who always focused on seeing the students in front of us as whole people whose dignity and inherent self-worth must come first in any educational endeavor.

The Education Department will be coordinating a celebration of life for Teri at the end of the Summer Residency program on July 26th. Details on that event will be made available at a later time.

AUS | URBAN ENDEAVORS: ACTIVATING ASPIRATIONAL ACTIONThe Master’s of Arts in Education with Urban Environmental Education (UEE) at Antioch University Seattle is committed to advancing race, culture, equity, and inclusion in environmental leadership. Faculty of Urban Ecology, MAEd in Urban Environmental Education program, and blog writer Weston Brinkley, who wrote the below article, leads an innovative Urban Ecology series within the UEE program. Complex Urban Systems is one of three courses within that series.

Each week in Complex Urban Systems class every student presents and dissects a new urban endeavor. These accounts of activities, experiences, and aspirations in the urban environment are a cornerstone in inundating each student with dozens and dozens of stories from urban space. Through this approach and others each participant works through many of the events and experiences that make up urban life.

This most recent quarter has seen exploration of over one hundred topics. Examples include a local youth climate strike, a city council initiative for equitably distributing trees across communities, a range of new homelessness policies and programs, state implemented sliding scale grants matching for parks projects, and redlining in property deeds. The breadth of material helps build students’ confidence and acumen in any type of urban issue they may encounter. For more information go here.

AULA | ADVICE ON JOINING A NONPROFIT BOARDTeaching faculty member and chair of the Management Studies Department David Norgard has been working in nonprofits for his entire career, and in that time, he’s become an expert on nonprofit board governance. Even after first graduating from school, he says, he “saw early on how boards have extraordinary influence on an organization, and yet they sometimes can be dysfunctional, and at other times, they can be extraordinarily helpful.”

Because boards of directors often operate in the background of an organization, they are rarely the focus of attention, but they are vital to the mission of their nonprofit.

“We often think about nonprofits in terms of having a great staff or executive director, a strong donor list, or a good volunteer corps,” says Norgard, “But what’s not obvious is, ‘do they have a well-functioning board?’” Read the full article here.

AUS | DR. JUDE BERGKAMP CONDUCTS TRAUMA-INFORMED INTERVIEWS WITH IMMIGRANTS PROSECUTED UNDER “OPERATION STREAMLINE”

Dr. Jude Bergkamp is a forensic psychologist and Chair of the PsyD program at AUS. He is involved with challenging federal immigration policies such as “Operation Streamline,” a U.S. Department of Justice program which fast tracks the prosecution of people accused of unauthorized border crossing and automatically places them in deportation proceedings.

The San Diego chapter of the ACLU released a statement in April about an amicus brief filed by The New York University School of Law’s Immigrant Rights Clinic. The amicus, which includes Antioch University, filed the brief on behalf of 42 immigrant rights, community and nonprofit organizations. The lawsuit challenged “the constitutionality of guilty pleas entered in ‘Operation Streamline’ cases throughout the southwest border.”

To better understand how Operation Streamline functions and the impact it has on all aspects of the criminal justice system, under the auspices of the Federal Defenders Association Dr. Bergkamp visited San Diego, CA where the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently implemented a version of the program. Kelle Agassiz, AUS PsyD student and Research Fellow, also made the trip and provided assistance with data collection, analysis, and report writing.

Dr. Bergkamp, who has twenty years of experience conducting trauma-informed interviews in the criminal legal system, observed Streamline court proceedings, interviewed immigrants undergoing detainment and deportation proceedings, and conducted interviews with judges and defense attorneys. He authored a detailed report on the detainees based on these interviews and his observation of the detainment and legal proceedings.

AUSB | CLOSING THE GENDER GAP IN LEADERSHIP: AUSB LAUNCHES WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

AUSB first designed a Women in Leadership Certificate Program in 2014 and in May 2019, the program will relaunch a streamlined version of that course. The revamped course takes a 10-month curriculum of intensive residency weekends, keynote presentations, trainings, and mentorship, and combines them into three months to better accommodate busy professionals. The goal is not only to make these early-mid career women

— from fields across business, corporate, education, and non-profit sectors — aware of the professional challenges that they face, but to enhance their confidence and leadership skills in the workplace.

Dr. Jacqueline Reid, who teaches education and social justice in masters’ programs at Antioch, is the program’s director and says the new program is consistent with Antioch’s mission to empower students to advance social, economic, and environmental justice.

“Intersectionality is a critical issue to consider, and modern feminism is dealing with this as women try to understand the role that race, class, and gender identity play in having access and being visible in the public arena,” said Reid. “Women’s experiences in the workplace can be dramatically different, yet with these differences, there are also similarities we all experience as women. This program hopes to provide opportunities to understand the barriers women face, but also share practical, actionable strategies to overcome these barriers.”

GSLC | HOW TO HANDLE TRAUMA IN YOUR ORGANIZATIONAntioch professor Shana Hormann advises organizations and leaders on the collective experience of trauma—its impacts and how to build resilience. Like humans, organizations can experience trauma—and its very real side effects. This trauma can be internal or external, and if it is left untreated, it can affect an organization for years to come. Antioch Professor Shana Hormann, PHD, MSW, is on the faculty of the Graduate School of Leadership and Change, where she also serves as the senior academic program developer. For the past 20 years, she has researched organizational trauma and consulted for numerous organizations that have experienced a traumatic event, including nonprofits, governmental organizations, and private companies.

In addition to her work on organizational trauma, Hormann also consults on leadership development, indigenous empowerment, and building organizational resilience. An expert on interpersonal violence, Hormann originally began working with victims of sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence, but became interested in organizational trauma after seeing how Seattle Rape Relief handled internal and external trauma. As the center was closing, Hormann and her future co-author, Pat Vivian, did a case study of the organization, and asked the vital question: “Do you think it’s possible for a whole organization to be traumatized?”

AUS | BA ALUMNUS SENATOR BOB HASEGAWA SPEAKS IN FAVOR OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION INITIATIVE

An article in The Seattle Times detailed the events of Washington state lawmakers last Sunday in which they approved a measure to overturn a 20-year-old ban on affirmative action. “I-1000 repeals Initiative 200, a measure approved by Washington voters 20 years ago. I-200 blocked the government from giving preferential treatment to, or discriminating against, people and groups on the basis of sex, ethnicity, color, race or national origin,” reads the article.

The change is proving to be highly controversial. A group opposing the new initiative quickly filed a referendum to put it to a public vote. Heated debates arising between opposing sides of the issue could continue through to November elections if the group succeeds in getting it on the ballot, which will require them to collect

approximately 130,000 registered voter signatures by July 27th.

During the debate preceding the vote on Sunday, Sen. Bob Hasegawa, an AUS alum of the BA program, argued in favor of I-1000. “We can’t close our eyes to say there’s no racism, or there’s no institutionalized racism or institutionalized barriers because there are,” said Hasegawa. “And the statistics show up in the criminal justice system, the education system, from top to bottom.”

AUNE | FACULTY PRESENTATION AT 2019 INTERNATIONAL FAMILY THERAPY ASSOCIATION WORLD FAMILY THERAPY CONGRESS

Applied Psychology faculty, Denzel Jones, PhD, recently presented at the 2019 International Family Therapy Association World Family Therapy Congress in Scotland. His study, Black Emerging Adults’ Experiences Of Ethnic-Racial Socialization Messages from Diverse Sources, focuses on “social-contextual influences (i.e. four unique types of ethnic-racial socialization messages from diverse ethnic-racial socialization agents) on Black ethnic-racial identity development among emerging adults over time. Results indicate that although parents, adult family members, and siblings were the most influential socialization agents during adolescence, they became less influential during emerging adulthood as peers gained more influence. Additionally, across all developmental periods, emerging adults reported the most prominent messages they received were egalitarian and racial pride messages and the least prominent messages they received were negative messages.”

Jones also co-presented a poster, Answering the Call of Duty: Violent Video Games and Family Therapy, focused on interactions between violent video games, aggression, differentiation, and felonious behavior. For more information go here.

AUNE | DR. JIM GRUBER SERVES AS DELEGATE TO THE 4TH UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSEMBLY

This past March, long-time Environmental Studies Faculty and former Department Chair, Jim Gruber, served as a National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) Delegate to the fourth United Nations Environmental Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya. Other delegates included the Ministers of the Environment from one-hundred and seventy countries, other government representatives, and civic participants from business and academic sectors. UNEA is recognized as the world’s most important, highest level, international decision-making body on the environment.

“A key goal of the science delegates was to inform the international environmental decision-makers on the importance of integrating scientific knowledge into global environmental governance,” Gruber wrote in a reflection piece on the event. “We were also able to gain unique insights into UN processes and were able to explore opportunities to identify and engage in new partnerships and collaborations.” For Gruber, the assembly provided an opportunity to develop deeper working relationships with other NCSE senior scientists and explore potential international partnerships— such as with the Climate Adaptation Center at the University of Nairobi. AUS | SCHOOL OF EDUCATION FACULTY ATTEND AERA CONFERENCESchool of Education faculty members Caryn Park, Julia Daniels, and Rachel Oppenheim participated in the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in Toronto in early April.

The three presented a paper together entitled, New words, old injustices: Discourses of equity in teacher education policy and praxis. Their paper explored the relationship between two state Standards Board equity initiatives and their on-the-ground enactment through our own university’s teacher education programs. They employed discourse analysis to reveal

the underlying ideological allegiances and complexities of the Standard Board’s discourse in relationship to these equity initiatives – and they considered the consequences of that discourse for their own work, discourse, and ideological commitments as teacher educators.

AUSB | DR. SALVADOR TREVINO PRESENTS KEYNOTE AT THE 24TH ANNUAL HISPANIC LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Dr. Salvador Trevino, PsyD Faculty, provided a special didactic, interactive seminar on multiple culturally informed Salvador Trevino strategies and interventions illustrating diagnostic skills and effective interventions essential to working with Latino Hispanic/Latino families and immigrants. Along with this workshop for mental health professionals, social workers and counselors, Dr. Trevino also presented the conference keynote address titled: The Latino Soul in Grief: Tales of Hope and Resilience.

“The needs are typically reflected in the problems that they’re having. Right now, for example, there is a very low participation of immigrants in public health,” Treviño said in an article in the morning journal. “And the resources are available, but why is it that Latinos are not going to take advantage of these services.”

The conference took place on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Lorain County Community College’s Spitzer Conference Center in Elyria, Ohio. This year marked the 24th Annual Hispanic Leadership Conference, which is hosted by the Coalition for Hispanic Issues & Progress (CHIP) in collaboration almost 60 local and state non-profit, Hispanic and Hispanic serving organizations. Over the years more than 14,000 individuals representing hundreds of organizations have attended this annual event.

AUNE | ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY NEW ENGLAND CELEBRATES COMMENCEMENT

Friends, family, faculty, staff, and students gathered to celebrate the completion of degrees for the newest AUNE graduates. Approximately 130 of AUNE’s 240 graduates walked the stage at Keene Middle School’s auditorium Saturday morning, May 4th. Degrees were conferred to graduates from master’s and doctoral programs in disciplines including psychology, education, and environmental studies.

The ceremony began with opening and welcome remarks from AUNE Provost Shawn M. Fitzgerald, PhD and Antioch Chancellor William R. Groves, JD.

Keynote speaker Patricia A. Wand discussed the importance of service. Wand, an Antioch and Peace Corp alumna, made a career in education and libraries that incorporated service to the profession and community. She recently observed, “Service improves the life of the servant as much as it improves the lives of others. Service and learning go hand-in-hand.”

Wand asked the graduates to meditate on the meaning of service. “Volunteer service means we extend ourselves without financial compensation to improve the lives of others,” said Wand. “I invite you to join me in thinking about this definition of service in a little different way. Let’s extend this concept of service to include anything we do to improve the lives of others.”

Susan Hawes, professor of clinical psychology, and Joy Ackerman, a core faculty member in the environmental studies department, were honored during the ceremony. Both have taught at Antioch for 30 years and will retire in the coming months.

AULA | FACULTY O’DWYER PUBLISHED IN AMERICAN POETRY REVIEWCaley O’Dwyer, MA, MFT, MFA specializes in both Psychology and Creative Writing and is an Affiliate faculty member in the Division of Undergraduate Studies at AULA. He has two poems, Simply Simvastatin and 3-in-1, in the May/June 2019 issue of the American Poetry Review (APR). “(…) the issue arrived in my mailbox and I was quite proud to find my poems sandwiched between Tess Gallagher, Stanley Plumly, and David Trinidad among other great poets,” O’Dwyer said.

Publishing is often a time and labor-intensive process. O’Dwyer published his first book of poetry, Full Nova, in 2001. He has a second in-progress book of poems after the paintings of Mark Rothko, many of which have been published in various journals; and one was featured in the Mark Rothko retrospective at the Tate Modern Museum in London.

“I started writing a 3rd collection called American Proverb, which I’ve completed and which I’m currently sending out to publishers,” he said. “The poems published in this month’s issue of American Poetry Review come from a suite of about 30 poems (collectively called “Bikini Factory”) within the American Proverb manuscript.”

American Proverb is a darkly humorous exploration of American-media discourse and its influence on individuals. “I’m interested in strange things that happen to language when (my own and others’) “traditional” romantic inclinations in poetry clash or are spliced together with contemporary capitalist culture and the colloquial, technical, and other kinds of language it produces,” said O’Dwyer.
