Chapter 1: Introduction
ANSYS LS-DYNA combines the LS-DYNA explicit finite element program with the powerful pre- andpostprocessing capabilities of the ANSYS program. The explicit method of solution used by LS-DYNAprovides fast solutions for short-time, large deformation dynamics, quasi-static problems with largedeformations and multiple nonlinearites, and complex contact/impact problems. Using this integratedproduct, you can model your structure in ANSYS, obtain the explicit dynamic solution via LS-DYNA, andreview results using the standard ANSYS postprocessing tools.
You can also transfer geometry and results information between ANSYS and ANSYS LS-DYNA to performsequential implicit-explicit / explicit-implicit analyses, such as those required for droptest, springbackand other applications.
The following ANSYS LS-DYNA general information topics are available:1.1. Starting ANSYS LS-DYNA1.2. Overview of Steps in an Explicit Dynamic Analysis1.3. Commands Used in an Explicit Dynamic Analysis1.4. A Guide to Using this Document1.5.Where to Find Explicit Dynamics Example Problems1.6. Additional Information
1.1. Starting ANSYS LS-DYNA
You can start ANSYS LS-DYNA from the ANSYS Launcher or from the command level. See Running theANSYS Program in the Operations Guide for more information on these two methods.
If you are starting ANSYS LS-DYNA at the command level, you need to use the -dyn command optionfor ANSYS Structural and higher license levels that do not have LS-DYNA enabled. As an alternative tothis command line option, you can set the environment variable ANSYS12_DYN to ON, or select the LS-DYNA (-dyn) Add-on Module from the launcher.
The following example shows the command line method for running ANSYS Multiphysics (feature nameane3fl) with LS-DYNA as an additional license:
ansys120 p ane3fl -dyn
1.2. Overview of Steps in an Explicit Dynamic Analysis
The procedure for an explicit dynamic analysis is similar to any other analysis that is available in theANSYS program. The three main steps are:
1. Build the model (with the PREP7 preprocessor)
2. Apply loads and obtain the solution (with the SOLUTION processor)
3. Review the results (with the POST1 and POST26 postprocessors)

This document describes procedures and concepts that are unique to an explicit dynamic analysis per-formed using the ANSYS LS-DYNA product. It does not describe all details of the three steps listed above. If you are familiar with the ANSYS program, you already know how to perform these steps, and thisdocument will provide additional information you need to perform an explicit dynamic analysis. If youhave not used ANSYS before, you should review the following two manuals (in addition to this document)to learn the basic analysis procedures:
Basic Analysis Guide
Modeling and Meshing Guide
When using ANSYS LS-DYNA, it is recommended that you use the default settings provided by theprogram. Many times, these settings are appropriate for solving the problems.

1.4. A Guide to Using this Document
This document contains both procedural and reference information. You may choose to read throughit from front to back. However, it may be more useful to read the chapters in a sequence that correspondswith the process of planning and performing an explicit dynamic analysis.

Elements (p. 7)Material Models (p. 69)
After choosing appropriate element types and material models, you are ready to build the model. Thetypical aspects of model building are presented in:
Analysis Procedure (p. 19)Contact Surfaces (p. 57)Rigid Bodies (p. 107)Loading (p. 33)
Features related to solving and postprocessing are discussed in:
Solution Features (p. 49)Postprocessing (p. 117)
Other more advanced capabilities that are not required to complete an analysis, but that may be usefulin some situations, are presented in:
Hourglassing (p. 111)Mass Scaling (p. 113)Subcycling (p. 115)Restarting (p. 125)Explicit-to-Implicit Sequential Solution (p. 131)Implicit-to-Explicit Sequential Solution (p. 137)Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian Formulation (p. 147)Drop Test Module (p. 151)

Chapter 2: Elements
Elements supporting explicit dynamic analysis are listed in Selecting Elements for Your Analysis:
All explicit dynamic elements are 3-D except for PLANE162, and all use reduced integration by default, when applicable. Reduced integration means that the number of points for numerical integration inthe element formation process is less than that necessary for exact integration; therefore, one integrationpoint is the default formulation for solid, shell, plane, and beam elements. Full integration options arealso available for those elements. For LINK160 and LINK167 elements, one-point integration is enoughfor exact integration. For COMBI165 and MASS166 elements, no element integration is needed. Foradditional details, see Hourglassing (p. 111) and also the LS-DYNA Theoretical Manual.
These elements assume a linear displacement function, with the following exceptions: SOLID168 elements, which have midside nodes, and MASS166 elements, which have only one node. The explicit dynamicelements are not available with extra shape functions. Explicit elements with linear displacement functionsand one point integration are best suited for nonlinear applications with large deformations and mater-ial failure.
The explicit elements are not linked directly to material properties. For example, the SOLID164 elementsupports many material models, including elastic, plastic, rubber, and foam models. Unless stated oth-erwise, the minimum material property requirements for all elements are density, Poisson's ratio, andelastic modulus. See Material Models (p. 69) for detailed information about the material properties thatcan be used in an explicit dynamic analysis. Also see Element Support for Material Models in the ElementReference.
The following explicit element topics are available:2.1. Solid and Shell Elements2.2. Beam and Link Elements2.3. Discrete Elements2.4. General Element Capabilities
2.1. Solid and Shell Elements
2.1.1. SOLID164
The SOLID164 element is an 8-node brick element. By default, it uses reduced (one point) integrationplus viscous hourglass control for faster element formulation. One point integration is advantageousdue to savings on computer time and robustness in cases of large deformations. A fully integrated solidformulation (KEYOPT(1) = 2) is also available; see the element description for SOLID164 in the ElementReferenceand Section 3.3 of the LS-DYNA Theoretical Manual. If hourglass phenomenon is a concern, such as with foams, the fully integrated formulation may perform better because hourglass control isnot required; but it is about four times more costly in terms of CPU time.
KEYOPT(5) defines the element continuum treatment. Two different formulations are available: Lagrangian(default) and Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE). See Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian Formulation in theANSYS LS-DYNA User's Guide for more information.

Wedge, pyramid, and tetrahedra shaped SOLID164 elements are simply degenerate bricks (i.e., someof the nodes are repeated). These shapes are often too stiff in bending and cause problems in somesituations. Therefore, these degenerate shapes should be avoided. If a tetrahedron mesh is desired, itis recommended that SOLID168 elements be used instead of degenerated SOLID164 elements.

2.1.2. SHELL163
Twelve different formulations are available for the SHELL163 element. Use KEYOPT(1) to specify thedesired formulation. As with solid elements, the number of integration points per element directly impactsCPU time. Therefore, for general analyses, the reduced integration shell formulations are recommended. The following is an outline of the different formulations available for SHELL163. Coordinate systems foroutput of quantities associated with SHELL163 may vary for different formulations. See the ElementReference for more information.
2.1.2.1. General Shell Formulations
Belytschko-Tsay (KEYOPT(1) = 0 or 2) - default
Very fast and is recommended for most applications
Uses reduced integration (one point)
Should not be used when elements experience excessive warping
Belytschko-Wong-Chiang (KEYOPT(1) = 10)
25% slower than Belytschko-Tsay
Uses reduced integration (one point)
Generally gives correct results for warping
Belytschko-Leviathan (KEYOPT(1) = 8)
40% slower than Belytschko-Tsay
Reduced integration formulation (one point)
Includes physical hourglass control automatically
Fully integrated Belytschko-Tsay (KEYOPT(1) = 12)
2.5 times slower than reduced integration Belytschko-Tsay shell.
Has four integration points in plane and does not need hourglass control.
Shear locking is remedied by assumed strain for the transverse shear.
Recommended if hourglass modes are a problem in the analysis.
