What a positive trajectory the Greenwich United Way is on!

For the first time ever, we awarded a SECOND round of Community Investment grants in the same year, thanks to the inspiration and commitment of our fundraising volunteers and staff. Over $1 million of local supporters’ donations were invested in health, education, and self-sufficiency needs in our town.

In April, we sold our building at 1 Lafayette Court and, in July, we moved our new headquarters to 500 West Putnam Avenue. Proceeds from the building sale were placed in a Board Designated Reserve Fund which has positioned us to continue to be our town’s safety net for a long time to come. Our new home has given us an environment of increased collaboration and

productivity. We hope you will come visit us – the door is always open!

Our events continue to set records! Starting with our Sole Sisters Luncheon in April, followed by our first-ever(!) golf outing in May, and then Brew-Ha-Ha Comedy Night in October, all exceeded expectations and all raised awareness of the important work we do. We topped the year off with a brand-new event, Dance for Champs, celebrating youth and meeting new friends for the Greenwich United Way.

In January of 2018, we will start the implementation of our new Early Childhood Achievement Gap Solutions. The initiative is a two-pronged approach to reducing our town’s early childhood achievement gap. The Greenwich United Way, acting as lead collaborator and fundraiser, is partnering with Greenwich Public Schools, Family Centers and the YMCA of Greenwich, and others. We are confident that this solution is the first step towards all children entering kindergarten fully prepared.

Our Reading Champions program, now in its 10th year, is well established in all 11 Greenwich elementary schools and 3 after school sites (BANC, Boys & Girls

Club, and YWCA). Our 100+ trained volunteer tutors are improving the fluency of over 400 children in the program every year.

All this success happens because you, our donors, believe in our mission and have put your faith in the Greenwich United Way. With your support, we are uniquely positioned as the one agency in Greenwich that does the “deep dive” research, uncovers persistent human services needs, and develops solutions to address them directly... as we have been doing for the last 84 years!

That means our 85th Gala is next year. It will be held on October 13, 2018. Mark your calendars!

Dear Friends, Looking back over my eight years on the Greenwich United Way Board, I am struck by the steadfast commitment and the cautious innovation with which our organization has met the evolving demands of a changing environment.

The Greenwich United Way is dedicated to everyone in our community having the opportunity to be healthy, educated, and self-sufficient. What’s next?

As the demographics of Greenwich continue to evolve, with an increasing number of residents in poverty and decreasing public funds to support them, our community is facing an unprecedented necessity for a town-wide, holistic solution for efficient giving. And that is exactly what the Greenwich United Way does. By offering annual community investment opportunities to address immediate needs as well as long term community impact options to support collaborative initiatives, our donors are uniquely positioned to deliver the greatest impact with every dollar they give.

More than ever, I am inspired by the generosity of our donors and the enthusiasm of our volunteers, staff, and Board who work tirelessly in the pursuit of our mission. As I prepare to join the Advisory Board, I am excited for David and all at the Greenwich United Way, to have the opportunity to serve and thrive under the very capable leadership of my successor, Anne Sherrerd.
