Where do you start to thankthosewhohavebeenresponsiblefortheachievements and successes ofLivingLifein2012asoutlined in this annual report? Thisremarkableorganizationis comprised of individuals, management,staffandvolunteerswithamazinggiftsall of whom are dedicated

tosharingtheirprofessionalismwithotherssothattheytoomightgoontolivetheirlivesmorefully.

AsIreflectonthisyear’sachievementsthe words of the poet Ivan Scheier, in his poem “Once, volunteeringwasfordreamers”springtomind: It was the way we got good things done before there were big budgets or bureaucracies...... Volunteering was just the way we were... A private matter of public consequence..... AtLivingLifeweallknowtheextraordinaryimpactvolunteershaveoncreatingrealanddynamicchangeinourcommunity.Wearealsofamiliarwiththe multitude of altruistic motivations that inspire individuals to step up and lend a hand whether theyaredriventoengageprimarilybyamotivationtodogoodintheworldorsimplytosharetheirprofessionalexpertise,theendresultcanbeavolunteerexperiencethatislife-changingforboththevolunteerandthecommunity.

Wealsoknowthatvolunteeringcanbeaterrificwayforindividualstogainbenefitsbothpersonalandprofessional.WeatLivingLifeandindeedthelocalcommunityoweahugedebtofgratitudetoourmanydedicatedandcommittedvolunteers.TheongoingdesireoftheBoardDirectorstoenhancethe professionalism of Volunteers was expressed in 2012bytheprovisionofexternalgroupsupervisionforallvolunteercounsellorsandthesettingupofaseminarseriestoprovidecontinuingprofessionaldevelopment.Therehasbeenaverypositiveresponse

totheseinitiatives.Theenergyandachievements

of volunteersarebestsourcedbyskilledandprofessionalmanagement.AlandmarkdecisionoftheBoardofDirectorsduring2012wastheappointmentofKirstyKirkwoodas

CEO.Herexample,herinspirationalleadershipandmotivationhascontributedinnosmallparttothetremendoussuccessofLivingLifethisyear.Iacknowledgeinparticularhervaluableguidance,adviceandexpertiseingrowingtheserviceinbothBrayandArklowandherdevelopmentofawelcoming,warmandenergisingworkenvironmentallofwhichgotodevelopingtheorganisationanditsservice.

TheworkoftheCEOhasbeengreatlyenhancedbytheongoinginvaluableassistance,supportandguidanceofferedbytheboardofDirectors.IoweahugedebtofgratitudetotheDirectorsfortheexpertise,oversightandprofessionalismtheyhavebroughttotheserviceatLivingLife.ThisyearweweredelightedtowelcometwonewmemberstotheboardandIlookforwardtoworkingtogetherintheyearsahead.

Theplansandoversightoftheboardandmanagementhavebeenablyrealisedbyacommittedanddedicatedstaff.Itakeimmensepleasureinthankingthemembersofthecounsellingteamwithoutwhoseknowledge,assistanceandclinicaloversighttheachievementsofLivingLifein2012wouldnothavebeenpossible. IwouldalsoliketotakethisopportunitytoexpressmygratitudetoallthestaffhereatLivingLifewhogivenotonlyoftheirinvaluablecommitmentdedicationandassistancebothtomanagement,counsellingstaff,volunteersandserviceuser,butwhogotheextramileingivingoftheirtimeinvoluntaryfundraising.Iwouldalsoliketoconveyasinceredebtofgratitudetoourmanyfundersforprovidingthefinancialmeanstocontinuetooffertheservicetothelocalcommunity.Theachievements outlined in this year’s report underline theimportanceofthisfinancialassistance.

ForthestaffandvolunteersatLivingLife,2012markedaspecialexampleof“livinglifetothefull,”inthemanysocialeventsorganisedbysomestaffmembersfromnightsouttosummerbarbequetorafflesparticipationinmarathonsetc.PersonallyIfeelmotivatedandencouragedeverytimeIattendsuchevents.PerhapsitistosuchgenerousandcommittedindividualsresponsiblefortheseeventsKahlilGibranmayreferwhenhesays:

If I had to identify one theme that characterised theworkofLivingLifeCounsellingduringtheyear under review it wouldbetheimportanceofretainingasenseofhope.

Duringincreasinglydifficult economic times whenthepublicmood

hasveeredfromdisbelieftodismay,withanundercurrentoffrustrationandanger,theteamatLivingLifeCounsellinghasremainedresoluteandoptimistic.Thecommitmentshownbystaffand volunteers has never wavered and nor has the determination to offer a first class service to thoseofourfellowcitizensforwhomthelowcostcounsellingwecanofferisavitalsupport,andsometimesalifeline.

Therearefewvoluntaryorganisationsthathavebecomesodeeplyembedded,andwidelyappreciated,intheirlocalcommunitiesasLivingLifeCounselling.TheannualnumberofreferralstoourcentresinBrayandArklowisevidenceofthis.

We could not do what we do without the continuingsupportof,inparticular,Pobal,FamilySupportAgency,DrugsTaskForce,HSE,Commission for the Support of Victims of Crime, 3TsandtheLoretoFoundation.Withoutthegenerosityofthesebodiesourfuturewould

2012hasleftuswithmuchofwhichtofeelproudandinlookingtothefuturethereismuchtofilluswithhope.Mysincerethanksareduetoeachonewho has had a share in this wonderful enterprise thatisLivingLifeCounsellingService.

beinjeopardyandIwouldliketotakethisopportunitytoreiterateourheartfeltthanksfor the confidence that they have shown in the missionofLivingLifeCounselling.

Itistremendouslysatisfyingtobeinvolvedwithanorganisationthatofferssomuchtosomanywhentheyareattheirmostvulnerable.TheAustrianpsychotherapistViktorFrankl,whosurvivedAuschwitzandotherNaziconcentrationcamps,wroteabouthowitwaspossibletofindmeaningeveninthefaceofthemostappallingsuffering.Hewasfondofobservingthatapersonwhohasawhy to live can cope with almost any how.Hehighlightedthehumancapacitytotransformsufferingintoanopportunityforgrowth.

TransformationofthiskindisattheheartofcounsellingandpsychotherapyandwhilethechallengesfacedbyViktorFranklwereofanextremekind,theprocessheidentifiedhasnotdiminishedinimportanceovertime.Frankl’semphasisontheimportanceofhopeisastruenowasiteverwas.

LivingLifeCounsellingreliesonthesupportandexpertiseofasmallnumberofemployees(mostofwhomarepart-time)andalargenumberofvolunteers.In2012,wehadanaverageoftenemployees, fifty-nine volunteer counsellors and fivevolunteerboarddirectors. StaffBothArklowandBrayareopenfor56hoursperweek(8.30a.m.to9.30p.m.MondaytoThursdayand8.30a.m.to5.30p.m.onFriday).Oursmall,dedicatedteamisresponsibleforthesmoothoperationofourservice,coveringthe two primary areas of clinical support and administration.

BoardTheCentreisoverseenbyadedicatedboardofvolunteerdirectorseachofwhombringsawealthofexperiencetoLivingLifeCounselling.Boardmembershaveexpertiseinareasrangingacrossaccountancy,corporategovernance,complianceandclinicalskills.Theboardalsohascommunityrepresentation.Thefullboardmetonsevenoccasionsin2012andtherewereadditionalmeetingsforthevarioussub-committees.

VolunteersThecounsellingservicesofferedbytheCentreareprovidedbyvolunteercounsellorsandtherapists.During2012ourvolunteersdonatedastaggering7427sessionhourstoourclients.Weaskeachvolunteertogivefourhoursaweektoseeingclientsandsomedonateevenmoretimethanthis.Buttheircontributiondoesnotendhere.Theymakethemselvesavailableforroutinemeetingswithstaffandreadilycomplete the various administrative duties associatedwiththeirrole.Whileitisdifficultto measure these additional hours it is even moredifficulttomeasurethebeneficialimpactthey have on our clients and on their family members.

OurvolunteercounsellorsareallmembersofthemajorcounsellingandtherapyaccreditingbodiesinIreland,includingTheIrishAssociationforCounsellingandPsychotherapy(IACP),TheIrishAssociationforHumanistic&IntegrativePsychotherapy(IAHIP),andtheIrishAssociationofAlcoholandAddictionCounsellors(IAAAC).

Ourvolunteerscometouswithvaryinglevelsofexperience.While22percentarefullyaccredited,another54percentarequalifiedandtheremaining24percentarestudents.

Basis of audit opinionWe conducted our audit in accordance with InternationalStandardsonAuditing(UKandIreland),issuedbytheAuditingPracticesBoard.Anauditincludesexamination,onatestbasis,of evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosuresinthefinancialstatements.Italsoincludesanassessmentofthesignificantestimatesandjudgementsmadebythedirectorsin the preparation of the financial statements, andofwhethertheaccountingpoliciesareappropriate to the company’s circumstances, consistentlyappliedandadequatelydisclosed.
