SCHOLASTICS ART AWARDS - HAWAII REGIONAL 1

E Komo Mai,

For more than 50 years the Hawaii Regional Scholastic Arts Awards program has recognized and encouraged the creative skills of young artists in Hawai’i. The heartfelt efforts of students to create original paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and videos are truly wonderful to see.

We are so proud of these students and rewarding them with a prestigious venue like the Hawai’i State Art Museum for their exemplary artworks to be displayed is an important way to recognize the upcoming artistic talent we have in our state.

Creating art does more than just give the viewer something interesting to look at. It helps develop important and valued skills in our students and teaches problem solving and thinking outside the box. Both critical elements of developing thoughtful adults ready to take part in our world.

Having the Scholastic Art Awards at HiSAM alongside acclaimed professional artists of the last 50 years is also an incentive for young artists to think about art as a career path and helps the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts continue to collect and preserve Hawai’i’s contemporary art.

Last year, more than 300,000 entries were submitted to the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program which is overseen by the nonprofit organization The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

There are 100 regional affiliates across the US and the most outstanding works are awarded the American Visions Award Nominee and the Regional Gold Key Awards. Finalists represent their region· each April in New York City and receive national recognition and share monetary awards and/or scholarships.

This could never happen without the incredible group of volunteers including jurors, exhibit specialists and the many, many dedicated teachers. Our deepest gratitude goes out to all of them.

And to the students with artworks in the exhibition-congratulations!

Aloha,

Jonathan Johnson Executive DirectorState Foundation on Culture and the Arts

INTRODUCTION

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

- Edgar Degas

The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts was established by the Hawai‘i State Legislature in 1965 as the official arts agency of the State of Hawai‘i. The concept of setting aside 1% of construction appropriations to provide a funding base for the acquisition of works of art set a national standard in 1967 when Hawai‘i became the first state to pass such legislation. The 1989 revision of the law created the Works of Art Special Fund, a non-lapsing account into which all funds set aside for artworks are deposited and from which expenditures for purposes consistent with Section 103-8.5, Hawai‘i Revised Statutes, are made.

Objectives of the Art in Public Places Program are to enhance the environmental quality of public buildings and spaces throughout the state for the enjoyment and enrichment of the public; to cultivate the public’s awareness of visual arts in all media, styles, and techniques; to contribute to the development and recognition of a professional artistic community; and to acquire, interpret, preserve, and display works of art expressive of the Hawai‘ian Islands, the multicultural heritage of its people and creative interests of its artists.

The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

Tom Klobe is professor emeritus and founding director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery. During his 29 year tenure at UH he organized and designed over 200 exhibitions, five of which received the prestigious Print Casebook Award for Best in Exhibition Design the equivalent of the Oscar for exhibitions in competition with major

museums in the US and abroad. (Once his exhibitions defeated those of both the MET and the National Gallery.) In addition to his work at the university, Mr. Klobe was instrumental in establishing and opening the State Foundation on the Culture and the Art’s Hawaii State Art Museum. Since 1999, he has worked tirelessly to support the efforts from visioning to the actual hands-on work in the galleries. He understood the museum would increase the general public’s physical and intellectual access to the state’s art collection, which would be a powerful source of education, enrichment and resource in the community.

Using personal artifacts, domestic materials, and the natural world as a point of departure, Wendy Kawabata’s art production relies on an armature of meditative practice. Overt in their construction and economy, value is embedded into each project through insistent work ethic and a corresponding interior experience. While process

and media frequently shift, Kawabata’s work is always connected to the processes of drawing and craft, and often extends beyond the domestic, bringing the outside in. She treads the line between the personal and the quotidian, and poses questions about accumulation, production, and the role of the handmade in the 21st century.

Kawabata is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and is represented by Sanderson Contemporary Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. She has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions at venues including The Carriageworks, Sydney, Australia, The Corban Estate Arts Centre, Auckland, New Zealand, The Texas State University Art Gallery, San Marcos, TX, the Fed Galleries, Kendall College of Art and Design, Grand Rapids, MI, and the Center for Book and Paper Arts, Chicago, IL, and has participated in residencies in Iceland and Michigan. She has received recognition from national and international publications including, Art in America, Modern Painters, New Yorker, Artweek, Aucklander, and NO Magazine. Her work is featured in the books20/20: Twenty Artists, Twenty Writers, One New Zealand Gallery (Sanderson Contemporary, Auckland, NZ), The Artists: 21 Practitioners in New Zealand Contemporary Art (Beatnik Publishing, Auckland, NZ) and PromptPress 1 (PromptPress, Iowa City).
