CAPA’S 36TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The CAPA Conference…Palm Springs is the backdrop. The totally renovated Renaissance Palm Springs and beautiful Palm Springs Convention Center is the venue. It becomes ours for 4 days. PAs fill the entire hotel and the Renaissance quickly becomes PA Central. There is never a dull moment. We learn together, we eat together and we play and party together. We share the California PA experience and it is a great one.

At CAPA, we are all about PAs and all about providing you with the most valuable and unique learning experience. We have a program filled with topics targeted to PAs and presented by dynamic speakers. More than that, the CAPA Conference is an incredible experience in and of itself. Each of you bring something special to the conference. And, this year, we will be offering new opportunities for you to “introduce” yourself to your colleagues and to learn about their practice setting as well.

There is a reason we return to the Renaissance Palm Springs (formerly the Wyndham) and Palm Springs Convention Center year after year. It is absolutely the best place to hold your conference. The hotel staff and management know and love us. It is our home away from home. People try to describe the “feel” of the CAPA Conference and find it hard to describe in words. It is just very cool!!

You all make it cool and we at CAPA have a great time creating events and opportunities so you have the ultimate PA experience while learning a lot, hanging out with friends and colleagues and enjoying beautiful Palm Springs. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Celebrating With Friends, Colleagues and FamilyThere is no better setting than fantastic Palm Springs. No better venue than the beautiful Renaissance Palm Springs and Palm Springs Convention Center. And, no better feeling than being “back home” at our home away from home where the CAPA Conference experience is born each year. You’ve gotta love it! And, you can’t beat the special CAPA group rates during Palm Springs’ peak season. The weather is perfect. There is a spectacular pool at the Renaissance Palm Springs perfect for children and adults to gather and play (they have added a sandbox next to the kiddie pool). Palm Springs is world famous as “America’s Premier Desert Resort.” It is home to many popular desert attractions including the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Oasis Waterpark. Fine dining (the city boasts over 400 restaurants), shopping and the weekly, Thursday evening, Villagefest are magnets for travelers. The Palm Springs Desert Museum is a showcase of Western and contemporary art, natural science and performing arts in the Annenberg Theater. The Palm Springs Air Museum highlights flying aircraft from World War II. The Indian Canyons, owned and operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, is North America’s largest palm oasis. At the Spa Hotel, within walking distance of the Renaissance, you can enjoy Indian Gaming. There are unlimited golfing opportunities. Bring the family or have a romantic weekend for the two of you. Or, come alone and simply enjoy the company of your PA colleagues. For more information please visit www.palmspringsoasis.com, www.palmspringslife.com or www.palmsprings.com.

Speaker Notes…Download speaker notes before and after the conference! Beginning August 31st, you will be able to access speaker handouts for those sessions you plan to attend. This will allow you to preview speaker slides and, if you wish, print those of particular interest to you. The handouts will remain on the CAPA website until the end of the year.

Call: 760-322-6000You will want to reserve your hotel room today. We have a block of rooms at the Renaissance Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Hilton. Hotel rooms will sell out!

FUN IN PALM SPRINGS

PArty At The Pool – 5:00 p.m. - Saturday

Last year, Taxi Wisdom rocked the house – actually the pool deck! All enjoyed the incredible concert before, during and after the Student Challenge Bowl. Upon leaving Palm Springs last year, we started to work on getting them back with us this year. Thanks to Greg Mennie, PA-C, we were able to do just that.

Just in case you don’t get enough dancing and music on Friday night at the CAPA Dance and American PA Idol Competition, we have more fun in store on the pool deck on Saturday afternoon –a live band with PA, Greg Mennie on drums!

Taxi Wisdom - Back This Year!Taxi Wisdom is a local touring variety cover band. The band formed in 2003 during a recording session at a studio in North Hollywood, when the bassist and drummer thought they played so well together that the only logical conclusion was to form their own group. After a month of auditions for other musicians the recipe was complete. Take 2 European pop stars, 2 over-achieving guitarists from the East Coast, add 1 phenomenal (and lovely) female vocalist, and 1 schooled, ex-military, physician assistant vision-oriented drummer and you have Taxi Wisdom. The current line up consists of 5 musicians with extensive teaching, recording, television, film, and touring experience: Shawna Basick - Lead vocals, Andrew Campbell - Lead guitar, Moose McMains - Bass and vocals, Marc Gumberg - Keyboards and Greg Mennie - Drums, percussion and vocals.

Our special thanks to Greg Mennie, PA-C and the band for making this performance at the CAPA Conference possible.

FABRIC OF THE PROFESSION

The Fabric of the Profession: Competent, Versatile and the Texture of CompassionAt the CAPA Conference we always celebrate all that makes

PAs special. What we know is there is no typical PA. We are

all unique and bring our interests, training, experience, style

and diversity to the table. CAPA members practice in each

and every specialty and in all practice settings. At this year’s

CAPA Conference, we will shine a light on each of them –

actually, a video camera.

When you pick up your registration materials and if you wish

to do so, you will step into a video booth to quickly do a

10-15 second introduction of yourself, stating your specialty,

practice setting and geographic location. For example, simply:

My name is John Doe. I work in Family Practice in Merced,

California.

We will combine all of the videos into several larger video

files which will be shown as you enter the meal functions at

the Conference. Via these video montages, you and your

colleagues get to “meet each other.” You will get a peek into

the wide variety of health care services you provide. You

will be inspired and surprised by the rich diversity of PAs in

attendance – by the FABRIC OF THE PROFESSION.

Over 40 years ago, the creators of what was then called the

new health professional intended the American PA to be

flexible and contributory in all aspects of medicine. For them,

a dynamic, flexible clinician who differed from a doctor was a

concept to be promoted. The PA of the new century seems to

have lived up to that measure.

Dr. Stead, founder of the profession would be very proud

of the richness and beauty of the FABRIC OF THE

PROFESSION in 2012. At the CAPA Conference we will

celebrate PA Day, October 6, which is Dr. Stead’s birthday

and also the date the first class of PAs graduated in 1967.

We look forward to you joining us in Palm Springs!

Thursday, Noon to 12:10 p.m.

On a policy level, PAs’ clinical flexibility holds potential for PAs to address critical health workforce needs in a timely

manner. The bedrock for this capability is the PA’s foundation of general medicine and close practice relationship with physicians.

On Sunday morning,

breakfast and an

exceptional line up of

speakers who requested

CURES at CAPA

Free Service at the CAPA ConferenceThis Year, Add a Few Important Documents to Your List of Things To Pack For the CAPA Conference!

URESAT CAPA

CCAPA is committed to providing PAs

with education and tools to help

you provide the best care possible

to your patients. At this year’s CAPA

Conference we will provide a free service

to allow you to sign up for California’s

Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

(CURES). Many people see the value

of registering with CURES, especially

after taking the Controlled Substances Education Course and hearing Jeremy

Adler talk about the important and

practical use of the Patient Activity

Report. That report is an invaluable tool in

developing a risk assessment in patients

taking controlled substances. PAs leave

the CSEC geared up and ready to register

with CURES. They get back to their office,

log on to the site and promptly fill out the

CURES paperwork. They even print it and

then often the paperwork sits on their

desk because the next step is to have the

form notarized. We are all very busy and

often we just don’t get to finding a notary

public, going to their location and paying

the notary fee. And, sometimes we do

all of that and still find that the notarized

paperwork and accompanying documents

never make it into an envelope with

postage and to the US Post Office. CAPA

is here to serve!

CURES at CAPA is a program which will

allow you to do it all in just a few moments

at the CAPA Conference. We will have

notaries public available, free of charge

for CURES paperwork. We will also have

envelopes, postage stamps and a secure

outgoing mail receptacle available to

you. We have made it easy, but you will

still need to have 3 documents with you

and/or copies of them. Without them,

you can’t register on-site at the CAPA

Conference for CURES. Come to the

conference with copies of the following

to be included in the envelope with the

CURES application: 1) Your PA license, 2)

your DEA Registration Certificate and 3) a

government issued identification (e.g. your

driver’s license). Make copies before you

come to Palm Springs (and remember to

BRING THEM with you) or we will have

a scanner and we can scan them for you.

Your life and ours will be easier if you

bring the copies. This is all about making it

easy for you!

Documents Needed to Complete the CURES Registration at the CAPA Conference:

1) A copy of your PA license

2) A copy of your DEA Registration Certificate

3) A copy of a government issued identification (e.g. your driver’s license).

Support Our Exhibitors – They Keep Registration Costs DownPAs are a unique group of providers who really want to listen and learn. We share this fact with our exhibitors all of the time. Please show them how much you appreciate their support by spending quality time with them to learn about their products and services. Word will get out that PAs offer a great return on their investment and our Exhibit Hall will grow. Exhibit fees help to defer costs of putting on the CAPA Conference. W hile in Palm Springs don’t miss the 26 ft. tall sculpture of Marilyn Monroe by American artist and Johnson & Johnson heir Seward Johnson.

Palm Springs Just Gets Better and Better! And, So Does the CAPA Conference!!

of “Main and Main,” Palm Canyon & Tahquitz Canyon Way in the heart of downtown Palm Springs and a short walk from PA Central at the Renaissance Palm Springs.

In May of 2012, “Forever Marilyn” made her journey to Palm Springs from Pioneer Court along famed Michigan Ave in Chicago.

Downtown Palm Springs is buzzing with enthusiasm as it braces for a renaissance triggered by the 100 million dollar revitalization of downtown Palm Springs currently underway. “Forever Marilyn” will provide a wonderful short-term attraction while the redevelopment takes place.

CAPA members will have a front row seat to witness the progress of the revitalization project. Our Fall conference will be held in Palm Springs each October through 2016. The downtown area will be transformed into an entertainment and shopping complex sort of “LA Live” like. The project is expected to take three years to complete. We are very excited to offer another excellent reason to attend the CAPA Conference.
