Dear Colleague and SAM Member: Yours sincerely,

There will be three avenues for presentation in the 1988 Scientific Program: 1) a ten-minute paper pre- sentation; 2) a poster presentation of original re- search and findings; and 3) a poster presentation of a case or a series of cases. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by a panel of Ph.D.s and M.D.s. The final selections will be based upon the reviewers’ ratings.

Sheridan A. Phillips, Ph.D. Abstract Selection Chairman

The institutions where the work was carried out MUST NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN THE BODY of the abstract. Abstracts MUST present a clear, concise summary of the work, including: a. Objective (preferably one sentence). b. Methods used (subjects, materials, procedre,

analysis). c. Results obtained (use statistics when possi-

ble, rather than descriptions such as “most,” “few,” or “many”).

d. Conclusion (based on data pertinent to origi- nal objective).

Introductions, historical data, literature reviews, and bibliographies should be EXCLUDED. Standard abbreviations should be used: kg, g, mg, ml, L (liter), mEg, m (meter), mOsm (mil- liosmols),/(per), and %(percent). See also short list, No. 6 under “Instructions to the Typist.” Place special or unusual abbreviations in paren- theses after the full word the first time it appears. Use numerals to indicate numbers. Any special symbols, such as Greek letters that are not on a typewriter, must be drawn by hand in BLACK ink. Each abstract form holds more than 250 words. Tables are permitted within the space. Abstracts that do not conform to the instructions will not be considered for selection. Extra abstract forms are available from the Soci- ety’s Business Office, P.O. Box 3462, Granada Hills, CA 91344, or by telephoning 818-368-5996. If you plan to submit abstracts, do not hesitate to ask for extra forms early; mail is somewhat slow. Enclose four (4) Xerox copies of the original ab- stract (as typed on the abstract reproduction form). The typist should prepare eight (8) double- spaced, “blind” copies of the abstract. Identify the paper by TITLE ONLY (no names of authors or institutes should be listed). Be sure that identi- fying information is not included in the text of the abstract. Complete and return BOTH of the Authorization for Publication Forms. Note that one addresses the instance when the abstract is accepted and the other when the abstract is not accepted for presentation and thus is read by title only.

Selection of Abstracts Authors whose abstracts are accepted for presenta- tion at the Annual Meeting will be notified by November 1, 1987. Authors of papers that will be
