In 1959, the American Cancer Society enrolled one million men and women over 30 years of age in 25 states, including 5,604 physicians, and asked them to complete detailed questionnaires about themselves. The subjects were then asked to complete short supplemental questionnaires in 1961, 1963, 1965, and 1972. The information obtained included details of the subjects’ current ciga- rette smoking habits. This 13-year follow-up study provided the data reported. Of the 5,604 physicians included in this study, 5,407 were male and only 197 were female. Of the total, 2,426 physicians answered all of the questionnaires. Among these physicians, the percentage of cigarette smokers had dropped from 38.6 percent in 1959 to 19.5 percent in 1972. Of the physicians who smoked cigarettes in 1959, 41.4 percent had given up all forms of smoking by 1972, 13.8 percent had switched to pipes or cigars, and 44.8 percent had continued to
