Editor’s Notes
H ello Everyone,
Who is Keith Evans, what's
his history and why sheep?
Born in Yorkshire I was brought up
in North Devon, Australia and
Hampshire. I love being by the sea
and the countryside, maybe I
should live on Lundy island! Lol.
I am a retired registered nurse of
30years and unfortunately now
disabled. I spent 15 years in the
Army, the Royal Army Medical
Corps learning the job, caring for
civilians and the occasional soldier,
well they do need help every now
and again. While serving I learnt to
spin helped by Mary Eve, Mabel
Ross and Gill Dalby all well known
advocates of spinning, weaving and
dyeing (oh boy, what a name drop-
per). But they were the ones who
got me very interested in sheep and
other fibre animals. I became very
interested in Rare Breeds and on
returning to this country became a
member of the Rare Breeds Survival
Trust and next year will have been
a member for 30 years. So despite
never owning any sheep, I was
brought up with them on a family
farm, was hand milking cows aged
5 years, attended a sheep manage-
ment course for fun and have more
fleeces and fibre that I could ever
deal with in a lifetime, allowing for
coffee breaks.
I first came across the BCSBA at
Coldharbour Mill in about 1991 and
attended the Coloured Sheep Shows
until the dreaded F&M outbreak
stopped everything. I lost contact
with the group, but then became
reunited by a chance meeting at
Fibrefest at Coldharbour Mill, where
I met Yvonne and half a fleece later
I had joined up. We then met again
at Wonderwool, over a cup of coffee
and another fleece purchase I had
told Lorry I'd like to become in-
volved and here you are stuck with
me. Unfortunately illness and family
illness and bereavement have made
it difficult for me to carry out my
duties during this wonderful period
of modernisation and so had to
hand over the reins to others, but I
hope to be your permanent Mem-
bership Sec and Directory Editor as
soon as possible.
Best wishes to ALL our members.
Keith spinning with his dog, Lucky, a loyal
little eight year old.

Our BCSBA website has been mod-ernised with new tools which prom-ise to strengthen our Association whilst we promote coloured sheep and the products associated with them.
Joining or renewing our membership with the BCSBA has never been easier, as now a membership applica-tion form is com-pleted online, saving the Association money on postage. Even better, you can pay using Pay-pal. However, if you prefer you can keep paying the way you always have done, it’s your choice.
You may have noticed the Facebook and Twitter links in the picture of our website above. In fact out website links with many prominent websites, a few examples include: Reddit, google+, Pintrest, and Linkedin. This increased poten-tial to be linked with other websites raises our Association’s chances of becoming more public, therefore enabling us to further promote coloured sheep.

With this increased exposure for our website the Market Place should strengthen. This means wider promotion for your business and selling your products to more people.
There is now the ability to run simple polls on our web-
site. Your votes will give the Committee
an idea of how you would like our As-sociation to work for us all while we promote coloured sheep. This will also allow us to see what can real-
istically be achieved given the constraints
over money, a volun-teer’s time or the number
of volunteers available.
Not only can you vote on the web-site now, but it is possible to have a say in a ‘Discussions’ ar-ea. You can also ask for advice or just have a chat with like minded individuals about your crafts. We will be able to include videos on the website, perhaps to help us explain techniques in our crafts or with keeping sheep.
So, our website is back up and ready for you to explore...

The Bradford Count
compared with Microns
If you are new to spinning or just looking to buy home spun wool you will almost certainly be bombarded by many strange terms, two of which refer to the measurements of wool.
People will often talk about the Bradford count or refer to how many microns a fleece has. These terms are important to understand when planning projects as we need to have an idea of the potential thick-ness and length of the yarn that could spun from the fleece.
The Bradford Count is simply the maximum number of hanks you could get from a pound of fibre (assuming each hank is 560 yards). So, for example a fleece described as having a Bradford Count of 28s quality means you should get twen-ty eight hanks from a pound of fibre. If the Bradford count is 64s then you should get sixty four hanks from your pound of fibre. This is a subtle way of assessing fibre thickness and yarn length as the higher the number of hanks you get from the pound of fibre, the longer the yarn is
The Measurements
of Wool Quality
(and thinner). Fibres with an esti-mated Bradford count of 28s is very coarse and 90s and above for the finest. The majority of British wool falls within the range 28s to 60s.
When people talk about the Micron they are talking about the fibre diameter. A micron is a unit of length (1 mm divided by a thou-sand). The smaller the measure-ment in microns, the smaller the fibre diameter and less coarse. This gives people an idea of how thick and coarse the resulting yarn might be. See the table listing a few of the common Braford Counts
