TheearliestJapanesepeoplecreatedstatuettesandpotteryvessels.By350B.C.,newimmigrantshadarrivedbringingtheirknowledgeofwheelthrownandkilnfiredceramics.Today,Japanesepotteryisamongtheworld'sfinest.TheintroductionofBuddhismtotheislandsofJapanbroughtwithitnewartformsthattheJapaneserefinedsuchasbronzecasting.TheJapanesealsoconstructedsingularworksofarchitecturesomeofthenation'soldestBuddhisttemples,forexample,stillexist.
ThoughelaborateandstylizedformsofarchitectureareacornerstoneofJapaneseart,paintingwasalsoimportanttotheJapanesesincethelateHeianperiodaroundtheyear1000A.D.ArtistspaintedhandscrollsandpanelstoreflectstoriessuchastheTaleofGenji.Paintingstylesoftenchangedasrulinggroupschanged.LiketheChinese,manyJapanesepaintingsalsoreflectcalligraphyaspartofthedesign.Landscapes,portraits,andscenesoflifearetraditionalsubjectsassociatedwithJapanesepainting.
TheJapanesealsohaverichtraditionofperformanceart.Music,theatre,anddanceareintegralpartsoftheJapaneseartworld.Manyoldformsoftheseperformanceartstyleshavesurvivedtothepresent.ForinstanceKabukiTheatreisstillacelebratedartformthatattractsvisitorsworldwidetoJapan.Folkdancesandtraditionalmusicisalsoperformedthroughoutthecountry.Drums,gongs,flutes,andstringedinstrumentsarehallmarksoftraditionalJapanesemusic.
WhilevariousperiodsofJapanesehistoryarefamousfortheirparticularartstylesandcontributionstothedevelopmentofJapaneseartandaesthetics,theEdoperiodisparticularlywellknownforitsUkiyoewoodblockprintsandartofthePleasureQuartersofKyotothatcelebratedthecourtesansofthe"floatingworld."ManyoftheseworksarehousedinthefinestmuseumsaroundtheworldaswellasinJapan.
