Analyzing the IDG Enterprise Cloud

Computing Study: Investing in the Cloud

In the previous blog, we discussed the current state of cloud and in this blog we would analyze

the state of investments being made in cloud computing. Among the various tiers of employees

associated with cloud computing services, executive IT appears to have more authority when it

comes to deciding on cloud purchase process.

Among the various levels of employees such as executive IT, mid-Level IT, IT professional and

Business management teams, executive IT has a more important role to play in determining the

business need for cloud solutions, determining the requirements, evaluating the available options,

selecting the vendors and approving or authorizing various cloud investments. In fact, about 70%

of the executive IT resources agreed that they were a part of the various processes involved in

purchasing cloud services. Especially, in determining the business need, evaluating,

recommending and approving the final investment, executive IT has key role to play.

According to the findings of the survey, there exists a large gap in cloud spending between large

enterprises and small and medium enterprises. As per the survey, organizations with more than

1000 employees spent an average of $3.33 million on cloud-based services while smaller

organizations spent an average of $400 thousand clearly underscoring the large gap. However, it

is worth noting that the overall cloud investments have gone up by 19% in 2014 as compared to

2012.

When asked about how much of the total IT budget of company is allocated for cloud services,

respondents expressed their views that about 24% of the total budgets would be allocated for the

cloud over the next year. Among the budget allotted for cloud computing, 49% would be allotted

to SaaS, 28% for IaaS and 18% for PaaS.

In the next blog in the series, we will focus on cloud adoption and implementation.
