How will you measure your life Clay Christenson focuses on three main aspects of life: Career, Family & Integrity. He helps us think and arrive at the answer for the questions listed below: How to be successful and happy in one’s career? The concept discussed here is in line what was discussed on our class – one’s career choice should be aligned to the individual’s personality. Clay talks about choosing a career based on 2 factors – Hygiene and Motivational. Hygiene factors are things like status, job security, compensation, work conditions etc. Absence of hygiene factors causes dissatisfaction. However, abundance of hygiene factor does not guarantee happiness Motivational factors include challenging work, recognition, personal growth and responsibility. The sense of satisfaction arises from performing meaningful work. The emphasis is more on what is inside the person and the job rather than just based on what tangible benefits the job provides. Most of us choose careers based on hygiene factors (compensation being the main criteria) and get trapped in expensive lifestyles. People whose personality is aligned to their career have a feeling of meaningful work and they put their best efforts in their jobs. Careers chosen with motivational factors are correlated to financial rewards. The monetary rewards are just incidental of job well done.

How will you measure your lifeClay Christenson focuses on three main aspects of life: Career, Family & Integrity. He helps us think and arrive at the answer for the questions listed below:How to be successful and happy in ones career? The concept discussed here is in line what was discussed on our class ones career choice should be aligned to the individuals personality. Clay talks about choosing a career based on 2 factors Hygiene and Motivational.Hygiene factors are things like status, job security, compensation, work conditions etc. How can one ensure that relationships, family and extended family become a lasting source of happiness?Career or relationship/family both requires investment of time. Short term investments or pursuit of achievements provide instant gratification as the payoff is tangible and less time consuming. However, investment in families doesnt pay off for a very long time. This is the reason why most people choose career over families. But the real source of happiness is ones family, friends and relationships. We have also observed that when everything in relationship, family and friends are going well, most of them are deceived to believe that the investment of time can now move from family to other tangible pursuits. Sometimes the problems which arise are too late to fix. So it is very crucial to invest time in building strong families and relationships which are the true source of lasting happiness. We should not defer the investment until the need arise, as the chances are that it will be too late. How can one stay out of jail?Clay then talks about how any person or company doesnt plan anything bad for themselves like getting decimated, or going to jail. They would never have intended to get themselves landed in jail. But yet so many bright and young people, though not intended, land in jail. This happens mostly because of going against their principles once. The mistake appears to be manageable at the first step. But nothing will prevent the person from doing it again and going against principles. This helps us understand the necessity of leading an integral life.We see that we can relate the scenario to the Triguna framework. Tamas (ignorance & foolishness) takes over by suppressing Sattva and Rajas to break our guiding principle; this dominance of Tamas takes a person towards a downward spiral.ConclusionOverall, the entire theme of the speech is to help us think beyond the immediate material/tangible gratifications and try to connect us to the bigger picture of Jeeva-Jagat-Ishwara. Immaterial of the amount of money a person has earned, or the position he has attained, he/she will only be measured by how many peoples lives he has improved or how many individuals lives that he/she is blessed. There is a remarkable quote which Clay makes in his talk - Getting a promotion at work will not have any significance, if the same day you have a breakup. So it is left to each person to realize the bigger purpose of his/her life and act towards fulfilling that, instead of working for short-term appeasements which just divert attention from the bigger purpose.
