DESCRIPTION

I have analysed the start of the Planet Of The Apes film and looked at the way the characters costumes, the weather, the camera shots and music have affected the way the film comes across to the audience to give me ideas on what I can adapt on for my thriller opening.

Analysis Of The Opening Of Dawn Of The Planet Of The ApesMatt Reeves

1st SceneIt starts off with one ape, which shows the audience he is most likely the main one.He is looking down which may show pain, worry or that he is waiting for something to happen. The music is non diegetic and starts off slow then speeds up once the apes all run off after the diegetic noise of the ape tells them to follow. The apes all running off shows that there is worry and that something is about to happen or that something has happened that they are getting away from.

2nd SceneThe low angle shot of the apes shows them rushing around and sets the scene as to where about they are and makes it more interesting for the audience to watch from this angle. There is no loud noise until one of the apes screams to the other animals in the wild which makes the audience jump and gets them engaged into what is actually happening as they may be confused by this point.

3rd SceneAt this point there is both a mixture of animals and the deer's are running away as the fast music starts as there is a chase scene and the music goes with this which creates tension and confusion as what is to happen next. The colours are dark and the time of day it is filmed in is quite dark showing a sense of mystery and makes it more scary for the audience to watch.

4th SceneAt this point, one of the apes is about to kill one of the other animals and is seen to be of the bigger size and of the higher status and the type that everyone has to follow and that looks up to until the bigger bear is joined by the louder jumper music showing that he is of the higher status which shows the mise-en-scene as the ape isnt who they should be following. However as soon as this is shown, the bear then gets killed which confuses the audience into who the wiser animal is.This also shows violence to the audience and makes the film start of with an animal getting killed, some audience may not like this whereas others might. It is a drastic way to start a film but shows what the film will be like.

5th SceneThe apes going up to the bear then shows the audience that they do care and that they are nicer than what they are shown to be.The music at this point is very quiet and gentle showing that no other action will take place creating time for the audience to understand it from the rush of scenes.

6th SceneThey go back together and the music is the only sound played which shows the apes do not want to communicate either that they are upset or tired but they do not show any respect to each other. By this point the audience thinks the film is about fighting. The last shot is of one ape. This shows the audience that he may be the main ape and that he is the leader, this is also how the film started. The mise-en-scene is created through the music, the actions of the apes around each other and the way the ape acts at the start and end of the fight scene as he is showing the same expression and shows the same attitude in both as if he has something to say about what will happen next.
