It is not easy to portray a man who was loved by all of Lithuania. At the same time, I want his memory to live on in all of us. I want the younger generation to understand why their parents sometimes softly sing to themselves songs about the cherry blossoms in Suvalkija, about the blight from Colorado, and about the plumber from Ukmergė.

I appeal to those of you who loved the music of Vytautas Kernagis, who attended his concerts, who knew the genius personally. If you have any old video recordings of Vytautas Kernagis’s concerts, programs, or personal interactions in an unofficial setting, please get in touch with our creative team. We would like to view this material and possibly include it in our film.

ItIt is probably not a secret to anyone that producing a film is an expensive prospect, and that filmmakers are always short on cash. If it is possible for you to donate to this project, we would be very grateful.

Vytautas Kernagis was one of the first Lithuanian artists to visit the United States during the period of the Soviet occupation. He became friends with Lithuanian-Americans, brought news from Lithuania, and brought back the support of Lithuanian-Americans with him to Lithuania. A greater portion of the film will depict Vytautas Kernagis’s participation in the independence movement. The film will include archival films of his concerts in America and his interactions with Lithuanian-Americans.

Lithuanians do not have an epic poem. However, our epic poem is folk songs. Through singing we understand ourselves and give meaning to our existence. Song accompanies us through the most important stages of our lives. The same can be said about the songs of Vytautas Kernagis. His songs are the folk songs of a new era. His songs led us into the singing revolution and gave us the hope that led us through all the way to independence. His songs inspired freedom.

ThisThis will be a film about a man who conformed to no standards, who was exceptional, and who was never false to himself or others his entire life. He sang about himself. He sang about his childhood, his adolescence, his love for Lithuania, love, loss, and even about his own dying. We all can find each of own phases of development in the songs of Vytautas Kernagis.

An Open Letter from film director Vytautas V. LandsbergisDear Friends,

I appeal to all of you who hold the memory of Vytautas Kernagis dear. I have created a number of films about people who are important to Lithuania—Stasys Lozoraitis, Arvydas Sabonis, Juozas Lukša-Daumantas, Henrikas Nagys, Vilius Orvydas. Now the time has come for me to direct and produce a film about the wonderful singer and actor, Vytautas Kernagis. Although he is no longer among us, we can try to keep him alive in our memories for ourselves and for our children.
