The newsletter of the National Farm Attractions Network Issue 68 Autumn 2016 This year’s roadshow tour took in a diverse range of attractions across the North East of England. Starting in Durham, attendees spent the first afternoon at Hall Hill Farm, where Ann Darlington and her son Richard gave a welcome talk. Ann and Richard’s enthusiasm shone through the drizzle of the day and delegates were left in no doubt why so many schools visit Hall Hill year after year. After checking in to our hotel, there was just enough time to make use of Ramside Hall’s superb spa facilities before a delicious networking dinner. Tuesday morning dawned bright and sunny as NFAN members boarded the coach for the first stop of the day, Adventure Valley. Marco and Janine Calzini and manager Richard Garthwaite gave an insightful presentation charting Adventure Valley’s rapid growth. There was just enough time to visit all the different indoor and outdoor play areas and animal barns before we had to leave for our next destination. Beamish, the living history museum of the North, covers an area of over 300 acres. We were met by Seb Littlewood, head of rural life, where we saw old farm machinery, buildings and a school group baking in the 1940s themed Farm House. It was impossible to see all of Beamish in an afternoon and many members vowed to make a return visit. We left Beamish, stopping off at The Angel of The North for a quick photo opportunity, arriving at our hotel next to The Baltic in Newcastle/Gateshead on the banks of the Tyne. There was time to see the art exhibition at The Baltic, or explore the local bars before heading to the rooftop restaurant at The Baltic for a fabulous dinner with a view. Day three saw an early start and a visit to Eshottheugh Animal Park. An enchanting mix of farm animals and more exotic species. We were welcomed by Maxine Bradley who gave an enlightening tour of the animal park, which is continuing to evolve and expand. There was time for some final questions, a cup of tea and some delicious British beef jerky before we boarded the coach. Our final destination on the North East Tour was The Alnwick Garden. Head of Garden Operations Trevor Jones, brought the gardens to life with his depth of knowledge and passion for planting. Thanks to all the venues who hosted us, to the NFAN farm members and trade members on the tour who shared their good humour and their own experiences. Thanks too to Davies & Co who sponsored the North East Roadshow. We are now planning 2017 events so if you have suggestions of where next year’s roadshow tour could be heading please get in touch.
