Metaphysical Poetry? Metaphysical poetry (1600’s) are lyric poems

that are centered on analyzing ‘the big picture’ of concepts such as God, love; sensual & emotional, politics, science, etc. Metaphysical poets show of their brilliant wit through the use of irony, their distinctive wordplay, simple diction, imagery, & metaphysical conceits.

History & Info Most of the metaphysical poets were found in England. 1534: King Henry VIII breaks away from Catholicism and

establishes the English monarch as head of the Church of England; begins the long struggle towards England's "true religious preference."

Colonization to the New World and establishing their global empire under James I.

1642-1651: English Civil War breaks out; leads to the execution of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell takes over as dictator of England.

1688: The Glorious Revolution occurs when William and Mary of Orange come to power in England.

Born on April 3rd 1593, 5th child of 9 other siblings. At Trinity College he earned his B.A. (1613) and M.A.

Cambridge at special occasions; later resigned. Continued the rest of his life as a minister for the

Church of England. Notable Works:

Andrew Marvell(1621 – 1678)

At the age of 13, he attended Trinity College and earned his B.A. degree.

It is unknown as to what he did right after college. He may have travelled in continental Europe, serving

as a tutor for an aristocrat in the Grand Tour. In 1657 Marvell was appointed assistant to John

Milton, Latin Secretary for the Commonwealth. Notable works:

Henry Vaughan(1621 – 1695)

► Welsh physician, author and metaphysical poet► Produced the term “silurist” based on his inspiration

of his natural environment and taken from Celtic tribe of pre-roman south Wales that resisted the Romans, also reflected love for welsh mountains.

► His poem Olur Iscanus describes his happy life despite in debt.

► One of his significant poems known as Silex Scintillans illustrates his encounter with death from prolonged sickness and pain and transition to one of rebirth shown in his poems.

Henry Vaughan(1621 – 1695)

One of his models for inspiration was George Herbert due to his gift of gracious feeling and spiritual quickening and his influence can be seen in Silex Schintillans which resembles
