Our only formal meeting night of the year. We will be electing our committee, reviewing the past year’s events and looking ahead to 2016. That’s followed by a fun, multiple choice Alfa quiz set by last year’s winner Peter Farley. Nice prizes too. Formalities start at 8pm. Please arrive early if you plan to eat there.
AROC Track Day
at Blyton Park, Lincs. Saturday 10 October
AROC is back with a track day at this excellent circuit in Lincolnshire. Please contact John if you’ve not already booked as spaces are limited. Spectators are free.
Rolling Road Night at FutureMotorSports
Syston, Leicester Monday 26 October, from 6pm
We had a lot of fun with our Dyno Night back in April last year, so 18 months on we thought we’d have another go. Cost is £30 a car, payable on the night, and for that you get 3 power runs with full performance print-outs. It’s not over stressful on the car and gives a fascinating insight. Followed by debrief in the pub! Please BOOK your place with John.

Our Cars . . . and more
@AROCeastmids
This year’s big outdoor events have been some of the best I remember. I think everyone really enjoyed our Section’s own MITCAR at Deene Park, as quickly reported on in the last ‘Alfisti’ (there’s a bigger report in this month’s AROC magazine). Before that our pals in the North West staged an excellent National Alfa Day, and back in April we had Spring Alfa Day at the Imperial War Museum Duxford with the East Anglia and its local sections to the fore. That one seems like ages ago now! All in all though there’s been plenty to enjoy with some superb cars to see and plenty else to do.
Moving to the darker evenings can be a tad depressing, but this month we’ve still got some good plans. The AROC Track Day at Blyton Park in Lincolnshire will be a fun run out even for those not taking part (spectating is free), and we’ve got the fun of power runs at Future MotorSports after that. (See panel on the right,) That was really good fun in 2014 and is at a bargain price again. It’s particularly useful for people with modified Alfas to see what improvements have been brought. (Note - cars with traction control almost always need to have it disabled, normally via simple fuse removal, so please bring your car’s manual to help!) Alongside the newbies we’ve already got some classic Alfas down to come too. Don’t miss out, get on touch quick!
On 14 October it’s time for our only meeting of the year with a formal element. Our Club’s rules require a Section AGM, where the committee is
elected, the past year’s events are reviewed and we look forward to the next. We always couple that with a fun quiz, and this time Peter Farley is quizmaster, being last year’s winner. (Such is the reward!) I was delighted that well over 30 people came to last year’s meeting, I hope we get a good number involved again.
On the subject of formal meetings, the Club’s National GM takes place in the morning on Sunday 31 October at RAF Cosford - a superb air museum with FREE admission, save a small parking charge. I’m presently a Board member so obviously am interested in members attending to contribute. If you can be there that would be great. The venue is worth the trip alone. (Formalities are from 11.30 with coffee before. The venue opens at 10am.)
Looking further ahead, and in mid-November we’ve got the HUGE Classic Motor Show at the NEC. Nick Wright and I have been planning the AROC stand for that since May and we’ve got some simply beautiful cars lined up for display. A special advance ticket discount will be available again, but if you can spare a couple of hours to help there I may be able to get a free ticket for you. (First come first served and all that.)
We’re looking at some other things in November and December too, before the annual New Year Meal bash at the excellent ‘La Torre’ in Coalville.
Thanks for the great support this year, see you soon!

September Meeting Night
Including the Twilight Drive
at The George & Dragon, Thringstone
Our September meeting at the George and Dragon featured a
convoy drive around the nearby lanes and villages, led as ever by
our local man by Brian Smith in his Spider S4. Happily, nobody got
lost!
We had another good number of people along in a great
selection of Alfas. MiTos were very much to the fore, plus 916
Spiders and GTVs. All safely back, we followed it with plenty of
nattering in the pub’s paddock and then indoors once the sun had
set proper and it began to get a tad chilly
We welcomed four new Alfa owners along, including Charlie and
Maggie Mellish with their 33 1.7 16v, a very rare car now! Clay
Human was along too - son of Section regulars Bob and Gill, Clay
now being a proud owner of a 147 Ducati Corse in bright red.
Sal and Clare Vitale brought along their lovely Fiat Barchetta too
in black with fabulous red quilted leather seats, and Bryan
Alexander brought wife Jenniie’s 500 over, as he’d hurt his foot—
the 500’s robotised 2 pedal box proving very handy!
Another fun evening at Thringstone anyway and thanks as ever
to everyone who came along. John

Karting Night
At The Sutton Circuit
Monday 21 September
11 teams of three formed up this time, thanks to a number of our members
inviting friends. It’s very much as case of the more the merrier, and with 11
karts going wheel to wheel you were rarely short of a battle!
A slightly damp start made the circuit quite different to drive on this year, and
it remained changeable throughout, with a mid-race shower to add ti the
equation - thoygh happily it never got fully wet.. It was particularly fun coming
out for a second stint when you had no idea what to expect, needless to say
there were skids aplenty! The downhill bend into the esses was highly
entertaining, you didn’t know whether to brake, steer or accelerate, and it was
a real lesson in understeer control! The general standard of driving was very
high on eth night, with few ‘mobile chicanes’ (OK, apart from me after one
massive off on to the grass!) ‘Prang of the night’ award went to Phil Levell from
our section, who in a serious dice with StJohn, lost it so well that he clobbered
an entire line of big plastic barriers right across the circuit, stopping the
race! We had a great laugh about it.
After 90 minutes of racing there were only 4 laps covering the whole field,
and the first 3 karts were all on the same lap. StJohn managed to set fastest
lap even on the greasy surface (impressive) and he managed to pull his team
back to a well-deserved 3rd place. Winners though were the team led by Dave
Malpas, who drove consistently quickly and with fewest mistakes, which is the
secret. Our ‘full’ Alfa teams came 3rd, 6th and 9th respectively otherwise,
which was good going.
Thanks to all who came along to make it such fun, and particularly to Dave
Malpas, Mark Sangster and Paul Boland for rounding up pals so lots of people
could enjoy it. And of course thanks to Geoff and Paul and all the team from
Sutton Circuit who make it all such a pleasure. We will return. John
4C Spider at Chris Variava Chris Variava staged a special 2 day event in
September titled Ride & Drive. Local members
were invited to test drive the range if Alfa
Romeos, as well as to see a LHD 4C Spider which
was on tour around the country. A few lucky
people with orders placed, or about to be, also got
to go in the 4C Spider alongside a professional
driver.
In the name of club communication (of course)
I managed to get drive. As you might imagine, it is
simply tremendous fun. The acceleration is just
so impressive, the gear change in Dynamic and
‘Race’ modes, under anything other tha a very
light throttle, borders on the violent. Great! Roof
off, and the noise at lower speeds is dominated
by the ‘race’ exhaust, rather than induction
noises that you get in the coupe. Those return
with the hood in place (a nice, thick item that is
easily removed or fitted and fits in the boot still
with some space to spare.
You’ll be able to read more of my impressions of
this gorgeous, ebullient car in the October edition
of the AROC magazine. Suffice to say that 4C
owners will be very, very lucky people. It’s just so
special, like a Ferrari Dino for modern times. John

Our 11th trip to the Leicester Aero Club Open Day saw some lovely bright
and dry weather, ideal for flying, and during the day we had best part of 40
Alfas arrive for the display area, which was terrific.
We had all been delighted to learn that the magnificent Vulcan was due to
make a fly past, as it had last done in 2012, Sadly, Murphy’s Law intervened,
and during its show up in Scotland the day before a rather major problem
struck… During its approach for landing, the front nose wheel only came
down to 45 degrees. By accounts, of all things a Spitfire took off, flying
alongside the Vulcan to inform the pilot of exactly how things were going as
attemots were made to move it. After much effort, and some rolling of the
plane, the nose wheel finally deployed and locked in the down position.
Potential disaster averted the plane landed. On Sunday morning the Vulcan
then flew back to its base at Robin Hood Airport with under carriage left
down, flying at its lowest speed possible. Happily it made it and repairs could
be planned.
So, we only learned this very early on Sunday, however, were heartened to
hear that a B25 Mitchell (American WW2 twin-engined fighter bomber) would
be coming past instead.
The morning dawned bright and people soon gathered on the grass display
area. The free pleasure flights started quite early, and I was very lucky to get
one with a chap known to our organiser Dave Atkins called Byron. I’d last
been up with him in a low-winged ‘Jodel’ about 5 years ago, this time him
armed with aerobatic license was in the biplane, affectionately called the
Bannana. It is actually a 1973 ‘Stolp Starduster Too’ (yes ‘Too’ not Two) made
in the USA. These are actually designed to be home-built (!) and are capable
of plus or minus 6 G, so well capable of basic aerobatics. I knew little of this
when I got strapped in the front cockpit…
I won’t go on about it too much (several of our members have been up in it
before) suffioce to sy it was absuloutely flippin brilliant! Rolls, loops, stall
turns. Oh boy! Like the maddest roller coaster you could ever imagine. I
thinkwe were up for about 20 minutes. Flying across to Bruntingthorpe at
about 2,000 feet. Coming back Byron gave me the (basic) controls, and I
could delight on some VERY gentle manoeuvres mainly on the joystick. Great
stuff. (I had a leather helmet on with radio contact to him in the rear open
cockpit.) Just before landing, Byron pulled a party trick and did a sudden
‘dive’ - sadly I wasn't holding my DSLR camera well and it went weightless, up
and back over my head! Thankfully it was around one of the many straps so I
could rescue it undamaged! My fault anyway, and I was more pleased not to
lose the photos than anything! ( I can imagine the insurance claim…) Anyway,
I was very elated on landing and can fully see the appeal… It is just superb,
the open cockpit feel is fantastic.
During the day all of our number who wanted to were able to get flights in
various planes, including Richard Shaw’s son Thomas who is aeroplane mad!
He loved it needless to say!
On the display front it was bril to see an early Messershmitt, a Spitfire MkIX
and a Seafire, but the B25 was probably the most impressive, thrumming
past on two occasions. An amazing plane my late father worked on during the
war! I honestly never thought Id see one flying, just brilliant. At about 500
feet it was a lot higher than he used to dscribe on ground attack!
Back to cars - and we had great variety of Alfas along old and new, as you
can tell from here. In the wake of the Shoreham air disaster organisers were
wary of us doing a runway run as we had last year, but we may get
opportunity another time.
Near to us was a great collection of Morgans which were fun to see, ditto
the local Police car and the familiar Lexus display. (If you like that sort of
thing. I’ve been to Specsavers so don’t!)
We were pleased to meet some new members too—Tony and Judith Bell
with their phase 2 916 Spider TS, and Sally Wray with her hubby 0 though
they weren't in one of their Alfas this time.
Late in the day, Dave Atkins had a flight of his twin-engined radio controlled
model (once a seaplane) - very impressive with it 5 foot wingspan (one of his
smaller ones!) A slightly hard landing broke the nose but I’m assured he’s
fixed it quite easily. Great to see anyway, and very realistic!
So, a really good day again, great to see so many there. Thanks again to
Dave, to all of the Leicester Aero Club too. We look forward to the show again
next year… John

Euro Road Trip by 156... 11 days, 8 countries, 3,142 miles and a fuel bill of £279.49.
Day one was ferry from Dover to Dunkirk and a drive through
Belgium, Netherlands and into Germany. We stayed in Koblenz
by the river. Day 2, and Nic had her first attempt at driving on
the wrong side of the road. We next ‘clipped’ Austria and stayed
in Switzerland where we had great pizza and calzone, and a
lovely campsite not far from the idyllic town of Davos. Day 3 we
set off to Davos and through passes which took your breath
away with their beauty. We then came into Italy taking famous
Stelvio pass. At the top we stopped to take it all in and had a hot
dog which came with a free sticker saying ‘highest sausage in
Europe’. On the way down the brakes must have got hot as my
new stickers on the newly painted red callipers had changed
from white to pink! But the car was still going strong and the
brakes didn’t fade. After Stelvio we stayed at Lake Garda having
a lovely meal by the lake. Day 4 we set off early to Venice, with not much sleep thanks to the Italians
partying till 4.30 a.m (It was the weekend). There we had a romantic Gondola ride and a tour around
St Mark’s cathedral. Day 5, we set off to Rome where we had a great campsite with swimming pools,
great for a ‘chill’. Day 6 we went in and around the Coliseum and on an open top bus tour. Day 7 we
set off to Geneva stopping on the way at Pisa to see the leaning tower. Day 8 we drove along the
coast to Monaco, and parked up in Monte Carlo to look around the harbour and prince's palace, also
taking the Alfa around some of the race track. We then stayed at St Tropez where we had a quick dip
in the sea before going for a lovely meal in Gassin, high in the hills overlooking the coast. Day 9 we
chilled on the beach and swam in the sea for most of the day, giving the 156 a well-deserved rest,
especially as it had a 12 hour drive the next day! Day 10 big drive heading to the north of France again the car performed faultlessly. We stayed in a lovely hotel not too
far from Dunkirk. Day 11 saw the last drive on the ‘wrong’ side to Dunkirk. The roads where very quiet, being fairly early, but that did not stop one British driver finding
a way to roll his Discovery over—happily no one was seriously hurt. We caught the ferry at 12 p.m. to Dover. We then had time to gather our thoughts and to think about
all we had done and seen. What an adventure and what a car! When we told people who we met on the trip, we were travelling across Europe in a 10 1/2 year old Alfa,
they would say you are brave. Maybe we were, but it never let us down and has given us memories that will last a lifetime. Steve and Nicki.

Wheel Treatment
I’ve been using two new products
recently. I’ve been a fan of Poorboys’
World products since discovering ‘Black
Hole’ their fantastic Glaze product that
gives excellent shine on darker paint
shades and is incredibly easy to use. So, I happened upon their ‘Spray
& Rinse Wheel Cleaner’. It is PH Neutral soperfectly safe on finishes.
It can be diluted but I keep it for when I want a ’neat’ application, for
example when cleaning Maria’s MiTo’s
alloys (bottom left). Doing short town
-based journeys the brake dust build
up can be prolific. It’s a simple spray
on, agitate with a brush, leave to
dwell for3 or 4 minutes and rinse off
process and works a treat. To keep
them cleaner for longer and to add a
simple layer of added protection, I’ve
used Autoglym’s new Wheel Protector
spray product. Now I did try this
earlier this year on my Giulietta with
its semi-matt dark grey alloys. No
doubt it was effective on that, but left
far too high a gloss finish. Now, on
‘standard’ silver alloys, like the MiTo
has, it works an absolute
treat. Just make sure the
wheels are totally dry
before application as water
runs can spoil the
appearance. Application
couldn’t be simpler, just
shake can and spray on!
Great on shiny brake
callipers too, and it doesn’t
appear to be a problem if it
gets on discs either,
(though probably a good
idea to try and avoid that!
Two good products. John
New Alfa Special Editions The ‘Collezione’ name returns for Giulietta and appears on MiTo,
Giulietta also gets a ‘Sprint Speciale’.
The MiTo Collezione arrived in early September with a host of standard
equipment, plus a new micalised paint finish called ’Ardelisia’. Bronze-effect alloy
wheels and mirror caps are very attractive, and the interior has many special
features including new upholsteries in mixed cloth and faux leather, extending to
door trims. Cruise control, rear parking sensors, Uconnect Nav and DAB all
feature. Two engines are available, 105bhp TwinAir manual and 140bhp TCT.
Prices start at £17660. That’s over £1,600 kit for £750 over a QV Line edition.
The Giulietta Collezione this time is also a high-spec machine. It keeps the
black roof and mirror caps of the 2013 version. Its available with 170bhp Multiair
manual or TCT, 150bhp manual 2.0 Diesel or 175bhp TCT. Special all-leather
heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, unique dark finish 18” alloys, and
big Uconnect NAV/DAB system means a terrific spec.
The Giulietta Sprint Speciale builds on the recent Sprint edition with Brembo
brakes, high-back seats based
on the QV (fabric and Alcantara
not leather), rear parking
sensors, dual-zone climate
control, visibility pack,
aluminium pedals and ‘sports
suspension’. There’s a limited
colour range. Engines are
150bhp MultiAir manual or
170bhp TCT, 150bhp diesel
manual or 175bhpt TCT. Pricing
given the spec is very attractive.

Alfa Romeo at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015
Alfa fans were hopeful of a string of announcements
at Frankfurt, however the show was essentially a
formal public presentation of the wonderful Giulia
Quadrifoglio. It was literally taking it to the M3 on
BMW’s home turf. Alfa’s 503bhp stunner was
presented in 5 attractive shades; Competizione Red,
Trofeo White, Vulcano Black, Vesuvio Grey and
Montecarlo Blue – combined with leather and
Alcantara interiors.
Some exciting statistics were shown— the cars
measured top speed is 307km/h - that’s 191 mph.
Should be enough! Development versions have been
pounding the ‘Ring too, and it has a quoted best of
7.39 seconds. That’s just quicker that a 911 GT3,
even a McLaren Mercedes SLR (!), and wallops the
V6 turbo M4 Coupe by 13 seconds. OK, we can take
all ‘Ring times with a pinch of salt, but it’s no slouch.
The bonnets could be opened, and for a modern
engine, it looks really attractive with eth block set
really well back, front/mid-engined style for great
weight distribution.
Pricing? The Quadrifoglio will start at around
79,000 Euros, with the highest spec launch models
(carbon seats etc.) at 95,000 Euros. EU orders start
in Q4 2015, but no word on UK.
ALFISTI - October 2015 - Issue 179 AROC East Midlands Section Newsletter
So when will we learn more about the less extreme
versions? Well, there were no details given at all at the
show itself, but thanks to the delights of Social Media, the
clue I got from Alfa Romeo UK PR was that a USA
presentation is most probable. The LA Motor Show in mid-
November therefore would look a strong possibility. And
they know how to put a show on in USA… John

Chris Variava, a flying
machine! Once taken on
a test drive his Suzuki
was history. AROC
membership purchased
by me at MITCAR!

Spider 2.0 Twin Spark - Tony & Judith Bell
New members Tony and Judith brought their Spider along to the Aero Club day.
It’s a very good order in classic red with black. Tony has a few minor cosmetics
to sort (badges) but its
in great order
otherwise. This is their
first Italian sportster,
inspired by a friend
who had a FIAT
Barchetta; very good
cars in their own right
of course! Anyway, we
look forward to seeing
them at meetings in
the future after plenty
of hood down
motoring!
GT 2.0 JTS - Graham Would
Graham’s GT was shone to a shilling for MITCAR (pictured below). The deep
metallic blue really suits the car and comes up great. He’s has just had the cars
wheels
refurbished too
which really sets
it all off too.
Graham is of
course another
of our Section
members who is
also an AROC
Registrar, and
his GT (one of
the first) is a
really great
example.
