Emotions

Emotion is the generic term for subjective, conscious experience that

is characterized primarily by psychological expressions, biological

reactions, and mental states.

Types of Emotions

Theories of Emotions

Many different theories have been proposed, but

among these , three have been most influential.

These are known , after the scientists who

proposed them, as the

Cannon-Bard Theory

James-Lange Theory

Schachter -Singer Theory.

A fourth theory – The Opponent-Process Theory

Cannon Bard Theory

A theory of emotion suggesting

that various emotions-provoking

events simultaneously produce

physiological arousal and

subjective reactions labeled as

emotions.

of these is responsible for subjective emotions

experiences.

Facial feedback hypothesis

A hypothesis indicating that facial

expressions can produce changes in

emotional states. (Laird,1985 &

McIntosh, 1992)

Schachter-Singer Two-factor

Theory

A theory of emotion suggesting that our subjective emotional states are determined , at least in part, by the cognitive labels

we attach to feelings of arousal; also known as two-factor

theory .

Opponent-Process Theory

A theory suggesting that any

emotional reaction is followed

automatically by an opposite

reaction and repeated exposure to a

stimulus causes the initial reaction

to weaken and the opponent

process, or opposite reaction , to

strengthen .

Understanding Opponent-

Process TheoryProvides important insight into drug

addiction.

For instance, heroin users initially experience

intense pleasure followed by unpleasant

sensation of withdrawal.

With repeated use of drug, pleasure become

less intense and the unpleasant

withdrawal reactions strengthen.
