Copyright vs. Plagiarism

There is a confusion among the general

public about the difference between

copyright infringement and plagiarism.

Many believe that plagiarism deals with ethics and copyright infringement deals

with law.

According to Laura J. Murray,

“copyright infringement

is the use or reuse of words or

ideas without permission.”

Whereas plagiarism is using those words or ideas without

acknowledgement.

Most people tend to buckle down on copyright infringement laws in order

to discourage plagiarism

but if we learn how to correctly use and practice citation, the problem may

fix itself.

Murray states that citation practices need to be adopted in order for the use of plagiarism to be diminished

and she argues that copyright law

hinders that practice.

Almost all of us can agree that plagiarism is wrong

but there is a growing population of people

who

don’t have a

problem with sharing

information.

Jay David Bolter believes the transition

into a creative commons should be embraced.

He believes that the

“fragmentation of information”

would be a good thing for

society to experience.

Brett Gaylor expresses that copyright laws are too strict

and that people should adopt the belief in a creative commons for works in digital

literacy.

Research has become less thorough because of a fear that we will fail to cite someone correctly.

Murray suggests that if we practice citing works of digital literacy, research practices will improve.

Also, if we all learn how to properly cite

works of literature,

the problems with plagiarism should start to diminish.

If we take this advice, we may be able to make huge strides in research on problems that desperately need answers.
