Nuclear Power Plants

Nuclear power can seem like many different things that may flicker through your mind. It could remind you of concrete coolant towers emitting torrents of steam, a mushroom cloud rising high into the sky or even Homer Simpson asleep at the control panel. Some people like the new technology because it is low-cost, and is an alternative to fossil fuels, while others stress the negative impact of nuclear waste and accidents such as Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.

Importance of Power Plants

Many countries use nuclear power plants as a vital source of there electricity. About 77% of France’s electricity comes from nuclear power plants.

Nuclear power plants affect the world In 2007 there were about 430

operating nuclear power plants that generated about 15% of the world’s electricity.

How they work

Power plants normally depend on atomic energy that do not operate that differently from a typical coal-burning power plant. Both heat water into pressurized steam, which drives a turbine generator. The key difference between the two plants is the method of heating the water. While older plants burn fossil fuels, nuclear plants depend on the heat that occurs during nuclear fission, when one atom splits into two.

Electrical energy To get the electrical energy you need

to control the energy of enriched uranium to heat water into steam. Enriched uranium is typically formed into inch-long pellets (2.5 cm-long), each with approximately the same diameter as a dime.

Energy

The uranium bundle acts as an extremely high-energy source of heat. It heats the water and turns it to steam. The steam drives a turbine, which spins a generator to produce power.

Outside a Power Plant

Past the reactor there is little difference between a nuclear power plant an a coal-fired or oil-fired power plant . The only big difference is the source of heat is use to make steam.

Protection

Power Plants emits dangerous amounts of radiation which are protected by a concrete liner that covers the reactor's pressure vessel and acts as a radiation shield. There also a larger steal vessel over that. Lastly there’s a outer concrete building that serve as the final layer. This concrete structure is strong enough to survive the kind of massive damage that might result from an earthquake.

If not protected

If the radiation is not control serious danger can occur to life forms around the power plant.

In 1986 the Ukrainian nuclear reactor exploded, spewing 50 tons of radioactive material into the surrounding area, contaminating millions of acres of forest. The disaster forced the evacuation of at least 30,000 people, and eventually caused thousands to die from cancer and other illnesses.

This is known as the Chernobyl disaster.

Pros of Power Plants

One of the biggest pros is that nuclear power plants don’t depend on fossil fuels. Both coal and natural gas power plants depend on fossil fuels and release carbon dioxide which helps contribute to climate change.

More pros

In fact, a properly functioning nuclear power plant actually releases less radioactivity into the atmosphere than a coal-fired power plant.

Cons

Uranium is needed for these power plants but mining and purifying uranium hasn't been a very clean process. Even transporting nuclear fuel to and from plants poses a contamination risk.

More cons When fuel is spent, you can't just

throw it in the city dump. It's still radioactive and potentially deadly. Eventually spent nuclear fuel will decay to safe radioactive levels, but it takes tens of thousands of years.

Where the waste will go

In the future, much of this waste may be transported deep underground. In the meantime, however, this waste has to be maintained, monitored and guarded to prevent the materials from falling into the wrong hands.

Nuclear Power Plants

Nuclear power plants are good in some ways and bad in others. I guess it depends on how you look at it.
