Born on or about August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

Warhol left high school at 16 and in 1945 entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh.

After graduating, Warhol moved to New York and earned his living as a commercial illustrator.

In the late 1950’s he began to paint images of Coca-Cola bottles, dollar bills, Brillo boxes, animals & flowers.

This became known as …an art

movement or style that focused attention upon familiar images of the popular culture such as billboards, comic strips, magazine advertisements and everyday objects such as supermarket products

Using a silk-screen printing process, he began mass producing these ordinary images of consumer goods.

He also painted famous people and found he liked printing variations of these celebrity portraits in garish colors!

In 1983 Warhol created a seriesof 10 color screenprints that portrayed endangered animals from around the world.

Bald Eagle, 1983 Giant Panda, 1983

Orangutan, 1983 African Elephant, 1983

Pine Barrens Tree Frog, 1983 Big Horn Ram, 1983

San Francisco Silverspot, 1983 Siberian Tiger, 1983

Grevy’s Zebra, 1983 Black Rhinoceros, 1983

Using brilliant colors; characteristic of his

signature style and poignant expressions

suggestive of the animal’s fate, Warhol creates

a dynamic tension between art & reality.

The gaudy colors and heavy line quality

make the animal portraits abstract, two

dimensional and full of tension yet he is able

to humanize the animals making them seem

emotional and intriguing

In 1987 Warhol died at the age of 59 after a gall bladder surgery
