Ruchira Gupta (middle). President of Apne Aap, Emmy winner for her documentary “The Selling of Innocents” and recipient of the Clinton Global Citizen Award for Commitment to Leadership in Civil Society. She and Delly were both honored with a plaque at the luncheon.

We also met Keynote Speaker, Vishaka Desai (far right), President and CEO, Asia Society. Like Ruchira, she is a very dynamic lady!

In 1993, I was asked to read this book written by Marian Wright Edelman, during my undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, Alabama).

This book was the foundation of my starting the “Sustainer Spotlight” initiative on our JLL Blog. I was curious what influenced our League Members to experience success.

Geosocial NetworkingAn electronic "sign in sheet" that requires the use of a smartphone and a location-based service application such as Foursquare, Facebook Places, Yelp, etc. We can "claim" our League headquarters and create "tips" at League-founded agencies and sites of League work to increase awareness of JLL

Mobile WebsitesDesigned specifically for viewing on mobile devices - 47% of adults in the US obtain info via their mobile device. Can include a two-dimensional bar code image on literature about JLL to link to mobile website. This bar code image is a QR (Quick Response) code.

Favorite Session “Collaborative Decision-Making”Teaching Points How to identify decision- making styles of myself and

my fellow leaders. Choosing the correct decisions-making method for

the right situation. Small boards and groups allow for better and more

productive decision making process. Don’t allow members to lose their excitement in the

Junior League. Members learn a lot from ODIs and return with new and fresh ideas. Getting provisionals involved in the training process it important.

Once a decision has been made: Manage the Change. If change is not managed, then this can result in a loss.

When dealing with a board or a committee, it is important to know the various decision–making roles and styles.

A consensus decision-making process is the vest method. Everyone has been heard and can live with the decision.

says that the most important reason to give is they a deep and sincere desire to help meet people's basic needs

#3 In order for donors to give, our League must be seen as the as a Leading Organization, playing a vital role in the Community's future.

1. Learn the cultural diversity in our own community. What communities can you engage? Compile your diversity history as an organization.

2. Be respectful and authentic when making effort for outreach. Engage members you are trying to attract and think through what's in it for them to be involved with your organization.

3. Align and create linkage in all aspects of your business plan/ activities. Plan them around what the ethnic group would respond to . Utilize local businesses of ethnic diversity to activate other members.

4. Take a long term view. But consider short term goals. Measure progress.

Favorite Session “Financial Awareness for a Junior League Board ”Teaching Points JL Board members have legal fiscal responsibility and

financial oversight duties – need to understand financial operations

As public charity, there is obligation to donors, members and taxpayers (public)

There was a good review of nonprofit financial terminology to know: permanently restricted, temporarily restricted, unrestricted; surplus and deficit; sources of revenue and expenses; balance sheet; cash flow; budget; statement of activities; variances; forecast

Data points can assembled in a dashboard to describe what is happening to affect critical numbers (like membership numbers, in categories) – example of good nonprofit dashboard is Indianapolis Museum of Art - http://dashboard.imamuseum.org/

Suggested presentation of critical numbers to Board (sample financial report and written highlights) and to membership (add pie charts, graphs).

IRS requirement – Form 990 – legally must be available to anyone who requests and will contain financial results, charitable mission, programs & services, description of activities and MUST be shared with Board before being filed

Teaching Points#1 The Chairman of a meeting may not make a

motion. They may ask for someone to make a specific motion.

#2 Motions coming out of a committee do not need a second

#3 The meeting Chairman may vote to break a tie or create a tie

#4 A second main motion can be on the floor before announcing the result of a prior motions ballot vote as long as the second motion has nothing to do with the ballot vote that is being counted

#5 A Scripted Demonstration was done to show how a rainbow of colors can facilitate a complex vote
