PERCEPTOR: Art Meets Architecture

As the topic may suggest, this project involved investigation of the border between Art and Architecture.I started by looking at contemporary art, such as Irwin Redl’s Matrix series. Then through making models based on my own interpretation of the art works I had to produce an architectural project. Our site was an old theater in downtown Los Angeles, therefore there was some historic preservation research and considerations involved as part of our.

50-UNIT HOUSING:Bridging the gap between Housing and

Single-family residence

This project was the final project of my first semester of third year studio. We had to design a housing complex of about 50 units on a specific site around Los Angeles. My site was locted on the corner of Wilshire Blvd. and Virgil Ave.Part of my desgin intention was to not have a single large mass that contains every unit within it. In other words, I designed smaller clusters of four or five units arranged next each other. This way I could provide each unit with more natural light and ventilation.I also introduced this language of pushing and pulling between units in order to create outdoor spaces for the units

Orphanage in Kitwe, Zambia

The most exciting aspect of this excercise was that it was a real project with real clients. The orphanage was funded through a non-profit organization and supported by a christian group. Also this was a group project which added its own excitement and unique challenges. The studio was organized in groups of three who collaborated on this project. Our site was a previously undeveloped site with an exciting church on it.Our Challenge was to provide housing, classrooms, play-area, cafeteria, as well as gathering areas for community gatherings.

Personal Project - Spring 2012

Cardboard Lamp

Relationship of light and space has been a fascination of mine for quite some time. I have continuously explored light, through my experimental lamp projects, as a medium that helps us understand space. In Roya Lamp (Roya means dream in Farsi) I took two volumes that were completely different in terms of geometry and form – one very simple and the other complex – and embedded one into the other. I then used light, in a very controlled manner, to reveal moments in the intersection of the two forms that were completely invisible otherwise. Also use of material was very important in this project. Corrugated cardboard is one of my favorite materials for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s very cheap and easy to find. Secondly, it is very structural and there have been many experimental furniture projects based on its qualities. Lastly, the corrugations themselves create lots of design potentials to explore. For instance, the fact that light penetrates through in one direction but not the other was one of the potentials that I investigated in this project.
