T he American Language Institute (ALI), part of the

NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS), empowers students in the New York area and beyond to communicate in American English with greater clarity, confidence, and ease. Whether you are just learning to speak English, or you are able to communicate at an advanced level and seek to sharpen your English language proficiency, ALI helps open the doors to heightened success in all of your career-related, academic, and personal endeavors.

For more than 60 years, ALI has offered English instruction programs that take full advantage of its location in the heart of New York City. Through classes held downtown at the historic Woolworth Building, or in the Union Square area, students benefit from the Institute’s proximity to the dynamic cultural, artistic, and economic forces that drive the City.

individualiZed attentionALI offers day, evening, and Saturday sessions for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Classes are small to ensure individualized attention. Student placement is based upon English proficiency level. Programs are flexible, with classes meeting from two to 22 hours per week. Placement testing and registration at ALI include a face-to-face, one-on-one interview with an ALI faculty member to ensure every student receives professional and personal attention, as well as the best guidance into ALI classes.

outstanding facultyALI instructors are highly trained professionals who understand how to help students navigate the complexities of mastering a second language. They hold advanced degrees in TESOL and other related fields. ALI faculty members have all lived abroad and understand the unique challenges of learning a new language. They design lessons that extend beyond the traditional classroom through outings and field trips to popular destinations such as the United Nations, the New York Stock Exchange, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and various museums.

the intensive Program in american english and orientation is a full-time, 20-hour-per-week program for students who wish to learn English in a condensed timeframe.

the comprehensive Program in american english is a morning-only, part-time program designed for students who cannot study on a full-time basis. It integrates practice in all language skills into each class.

daytime Programs for advanced students

intensive and comprehensive daytime options are available for advanced students as well. Students at these levels may supplement their ALI program with NYU-SCPS noncredit classes or ALI evening classes. This allows students to pursue advanced English language study that leads specifically into areas of their academic, professional, and personal interest.

evening Programs for intermediate to advanced students

Grammar and Writingfundamentals of american english is designed for students who may be comfortable speaking but who need to master the basics of grammar and writing in order to feel more confident in both professional and personal settings.

grammar review i is for intermediate to advanced students who still make grammar errors when they speak and write. Students engage in grammar exercises, essay writing, and other activities designed to reinforce grammatical concepts.

grammar review ii teaches students how to minimize grammatical errors and increase fluency through spoken and written exercises that explore advanced structures and complex usage.

Writing and editing seminar i helps students to develop their ability to write well-crafted essays on a variety of subjects. Topics include organization, development, style, and tone.

Writing and editing seminar ii uses seminal works of fiction and non-fiction written in English to explore issues of tone, voice, word choice, concision, persuasion, and humor.

Speakingaccent correction i helps students with heavy accents to identify and to overcome personal pronunciation trouble spots, including vowels, consonants, voicing, and linking.

accent correction ii enables students who sense that their accents and speech patterns are interfering with communication to adapt strategies for achieving more natural sounding pronunciation.

accent correction iii allows students to target specific areas of English pronunciation that are causing communication difficulties, including intonation, syllabic stress, blending, and discussion skills.

speaking clearly and correctly i prepares students to speak fluently and to accurately, develop their listening and comprehension skills, thereby improving their self-confidence in professional and personal settings.

speaking clearly and correctly ii focuses on improving volume and pacing of speech, word choice, posture and body language, accuracy, and other nuanced topics as they relate to effective communication in formal and informal settings.

speaking with confidence and fluency helps advanced speakers improve their delivery skills, diction, structure, intonation, volume, body language, and other communication techniques.

speaking and listening seminar: american culture empowers non-native speakers to master humor, slang, and other subtleties of spoken English.

Business EnglishBusiness communication i teaches students how to persuade, criticize without being rude, ask for something, and mediate discussions in a business setting.

Business communication ii is for fluent speakers of English who wish to improve their communication abilities when interacting in a professional setting.

Business Writing i is designed for professionals who want to master the basics of American-style business writing, including planning, drafting, revising, and checking basic documents such as e-mail, memos, letters, and résumés.

Business Writing ii is geared toward very advanced professionals who wish to further polish their written English. Students develop their ability to write natural, sophisticated, professional English.

Preparing for the toefl provides extensive preparation for the reading, listening, speaking, and writing components of the TOEFL through interactive, confidence-building exercises.

accent correction focuses on pronunciation, beginning with vowels and consonants and moving on to reduced speech, stress and inflection, context, and tone.

american slang and idioms examines idiomatic language, expressions, slang, and reduced speech that Americans commonly use in conversation, advertising, television, and online.

reading the news allows students to improve their English skills while keeping up on current events through reading and responding to online news sources, newspapers, and magazines.

american Business culture gives international business professionals the tools they need to become more effective employees, negotiators, and leaders in an American business setting.

summer language and cultural seminars

american english in new york (aeny) is a part-time cultural orientation and language practice program that uses New York City’s neighborhoods as living language laboratories to engage students in the daily rhythms of the city.

the american college experience (ace) is a part-time cultural orientation and language practice program designed to introduce students to the culture of American colleges and universities.
