MALE #1 (TONE AND NARRATIVE OF 40S GUMSHOE)

I was sitting on the rack taking my ease on an envelope and lookingcheerful when she came up.

She was, well, you know the type. You could tell she knew what shewanted. Something else. Wouldn’t settle for the same old thing. Only thebest for her. None of your common greeting cards.

I didn’t do much to catch her eye. I was my usual self. Engaging,Irresistible. Definitely something else.

You know the rest. The Wegmans scanner tickled. I shared a bag with abunch of broccoli and a frozen cod. Then I was dropped down a mailchute. What a trip that was!

I must have traveled clear across town before someone slid me out of theenvelope, looked inside, and said:

MALE #2 (AMUSED AND AFFECTIONATE CHUCKLE)

Aw, she remembered my birthday! She’s something else!

MALE #1: That’s how it happened. I was the card that got to go home … and makeSomeone she cared for happy.
