Classroom Procedure:

The lesson is an overview of the Founding Fathers of America, which is often debated as to the official number. Most students will have heard of the term. The lesson focuses on seven statesmen responsible for American independence, with each one unique in their contributions to the effort. A few other Founding Fathers are also discussed and includes relevant information about their contributions as well. Depending on how the teacher approaches the information, other lessons related to the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and the American Revolution may be presented ahead of time or following this lesson. There is an enormous amount of information on the Internet about each person, and it is highly recommended students have a chance to do some research on their own.

Teacher Notes

What is a Founding Father? Most likely you have heard the term, “Founding Father”. It is often heard when discussing the beginning of an idea, a concept, the start of a business, or some other important and memorable event or activity. For example, Robert Babbage is often called the “Father of the Computer” due to his work in the field of technology, and Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are sometimes called the “Father of Microsoft” and the “Father of Apple” respectively.

Of course, there have been women too who could also be referred to as “Founding Mothers”, such as someone like Elizabeth Cody Stanton, who might be referred to as the “Founding Mother of Women’s Equal Rights” based on her work fighting for the rights of women in America. Finally, several more women could be called “Founding Mothers” especially those who stood beside the “Founding Fathers” of America.

The term “Founding Father” is usually heard when speaking of certain presidents like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. But what exactly does that term mean? The Founding Fathers include several individuals who were part of the original Thirteen Colonies of the United States who led the fight during the American Revolution against the British. They fought with words and deeds to establish and contribute to the founding and the beginning of the United States of America.

Who are the Founding Fathers? The seven individuals most often credited with founding America include Washington, Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison. Except for Franklin, Hamilton, and Jay, each of the other Founding Fathers became President of the United States.

Three important documents led to American independence from Britain, including the Declaration of Independence first drafted by a Committee of Five which included Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin. A document advocating ratification of the Constitution (the law of the land) were The Federalist Papers, authored by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay. Finally, Jay, Adams, and Franklin negotiated the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution.

3

In addition, Washington was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and was President of the Constitutional Convention where the document was being prepared to become the law of the new country. Washington, Jay, and Franklin are also considered as the Founding Fathers of U.S. Intelligence by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). Each of the Founding Fathers held additional roles in the early government of the United States, and three of them signed the Declaration of Independence- Franklin, Adams, and Jefferson.

Of course, the Founding Fathers are well-known for other roles in America as well.

George Washington is referred to as the “Father of His Country” because he played such an important leadership role with the founding of America. He became the first president of the country and won the unanimous vote of the Electoral College.

Thomas Jefferson became the third president, and John Adams, after serving as Washington’s Vice-President, became the country’s second president, and Jefferson was Adam’s Vice-President. Following Jefferson, James Madison became the fourth president of the young country.

Benjamin Franklin, a politician, is better known for his accomplishments as a writer, scientist, and inventor. He published a best-selling book called Poor Richard’s Almanack, invented bifocal glasses, investigated electricity, and organized America’s first successful lending library. The Almanack included weather forecasts, astronomical information, and poetry, and was published for 25 straight years. It also included proverbs or sayings, such as “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

John Jay became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court but later resigned and in 1795 he became New York’s first governor.

Alexander Hamilton was appointed by Washington as the first Secretary of the Treasury, and his image appears on the ten-dollar bill.

4

If you could be recognized as a Founding “Father” or “Mother” of something, what would you want it to be and why?

Other Founding FathersFour other individuals often included in the lists of Founding Fathers include Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Marshall, and George Mason. In addition, other names may be mentioned as Founding Fathers may include all the signers of the Declaration of Independence or other writers or signers of “First” documents that brought about America’s independence from Great Britain.

Samuel Adams was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a delegate to the Continental Congress, and a politician during the American Revolution. He was the second cousin of John Adams. Patrick Henry, best known for his words “Give me liberty or give me death!” was a major figure during the American Revolution and is sometimes credited with the passage of the Bill of Rights as part of the Constitution.

John Marshall is known as the principal founder of the U.S. system of constitutional law, and served as the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for 34 years. In the Continental Army, he served under Washington and was part of the infantry who suffered during the Winter at Valley Forge. And George Mason, known as an American patriot, insisted on protecting the individual freedoms of Americans. He helped with the composition of the U.S. Constitution, pushed for the Bill of Rights, and influenced the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.

There is an incredible amount of information related to each of the Founding Fathers, and some of it includes negative facts, such as most of them owned slaves, but the vision and effort of the Founding Fathers during the 1700s led to American independence from Britain and the birth of the United States of America.

Answer each question. (will vary)

1. Explain why the wives of many of the Founding Fathers are known as Founding Mothers of America?

Though women had few rights, they most likely had some influence over the decisions their husbands had to make personally and professionally. Without the wives at their side supporting them, the Founding Fathers may not have been able to accomplish their goals.

2. Do you believe the U.S. would still exist without the efforts of the Founding Fathers? Why or why not?

Most likely, but may not have taken place until later, though if the British won the American Revolution, the country may have headed in a different direction.
