America & Neutrality

Today’s Topic:

1.) How did FDR help our Allies while remaining neutral?

2.) How did the Lend-Lease Act and other policies increase tension between the USA and Japan?

“War is a contagion, whether it be declared

or undeclared. It engulfs states…We are determined to keep out of war, yet we cannot

insure ourselves against disastrous effects of war

and the dangers of involvement.”

From his “Quarantine Speech”

1937

How did FDR help our Allies while remaining neutral?

• Neutrality Act 1935 no weapons to any nation in war

• Neutrality Act of 1937 we’ll sell you goods, but on “cash-and-carry” basis

• Neutrality Act 1939 we’ll sell weapons, but on a “cash-and-carry” basis

Can we stay isolated from war?

• Lend-Lease Act we will loan/lease weapons to nations who are “vital to America’s defense”, but these weapons must be returned after the war.

What was the purpose of the

Lend Lease Act?Are we still neutral?

How did the Lend-Lease Act and other policies increase tension between the USA and Japan?

-By 1940 Japan had joined the Axis Powers. Japans says they will attack America if they get involved
