Codes and Conventions of a TrailerMomentum pictures also known as Alliance Films UK and formerly Alliance Communications UK and Alliance Atlantis UK is one of the leading independent motion pictures distributors in the UK and Ireland. This UK distribution logo facades the trailer establishing that the film has been produced and distributed by an art-house company. A critic from Elle Magazine says “Totally Wonderful”. This quote at the very beginning of the trailer, just after the logo and just before the name introduction creates a magical and surprised appeal, drawing you in instantly. The words come across the screen like water ripples, blending them into the action taking place. So not drawing our attention away from the image of water and Amelie but through the spinning camera and the large font our attention is still drawn to it. However having it before anything begins, for example the voiceover that plays straight, means that we’re not retracted from anything vital. The quotes from various magazines creates a sophisticated and well made movie. It shows the audience that the movies has been approved by a number of industries and creates a very high expectation. Elle and Marie Claire magazines are very womanly, genuinely aiming there products at 18-35 year old women. Shows that Amelie is more aimed and liked by women.

Marie Claire says “Endlessly inventive… Will become on of the definitive feel good movies”.

Total film says “Quite simply, its perfect”.

Exposition: Very beginning shows Amelie older, on a bridge across a lake alone and throwing pebbles. The music is instrumental and very English, putting a false impression on the movie as a romantic sad tale. Leading on the, music changes from a more English instrumental to a French accordion sound melody, it shows Amelie as a child, her being different, having a strong imagination and depending on herself. A voiceover states that ‘Amelie see’s things differently’. The voiceover is very animatic, a Disney voice giving the impression of a fairy-tale almost comedic. As a child she seemed happy, care free and comfortable being alone. Then a camera flash is used to change the age of Amelie from a child to her 20’s.

Complication: Voiceover, ‘But it wasn’t until she grew up’ Amplified sound of the glass lid hitting the floor, ‘That she discovered a way to make a difference’. Amelie whilst in her bathroom uncovers a box hidden in the wall, filled with memories from someone's past. Finding the box I think was the main complication starter. After handing the box to its owner she uncovers how good it feels to see people happy from her doing. Shot reverse shot of man with his box and her watching, music becomes loud and eccentric. Showing Amelie has done something good, starting the story up as it then continues to see all the people she has helped.

Rising Complication: The special effects on the man to show he is overwhelmed with joy gives this film and even more magical feel, emphasising the fairy-tale theme. Voiceover ‘But for all the peoples lives she changed, there was one life that would never change’. This is played whilst Amelie uncovers more memories and makes more people happy. Shot of man opening and watching his video, extremely happy then fade to the same shot and position of Amelie with a blank emotionless expression on her. The fades are extremely quick, as if no time has passed between the shots/ scenes.Fades to black and the next shot is Amelie alone on the bus.

Climax: Music changes from the upbeat accordion to mellow solemn instrument, shot of Amelie alone on the bus staring out the window. Voiceover ‘Until now.’ Feet, Amelie is facing a man, shot of her heart beating out of her chest. Again special effects, very comedic, dramatic and fairy-tale love story. Music then becomes triumphant, loud and orchestra. Man runs past her, when they bump into each other is when the music becomes triumphant. Voiceover ‘Momentum pictures invites you to meet, Amelie. The girl who wanted to help the world but just couldn’t help herself.’ Much faster clips, shorter, more shots of her, the man and people helping her. Very spinning shots, transitions are quick fades and circular fades. Clips in-time to the ending of the song, tension built up here. Last shot is Amelie looking confused and distressed, then to the end credits.

In trailers it seems that there is an exposition, an explanation of the events having taken place, building the characters up and creating a background. There is also a complication, something interferes in the movie which they decide to show in the trailer for the wow factor. The complication will be highlighted usually, built up. Through that the rising action will entwine, becoming more tension filled, snappy scenes and more drama. And usually all trailers finish on the climax, creating the last attention grabbing scene, giving not to much away but enough to know that’s the highlight in the movie, and then ending it on that, to keep the audience questioning and hanging off their seats.
