AMAZON & INCA ADVENTURE 16 DAY SOLOS TOUR – APRIL 2016

P E R U & B O L I V I A

DETAILED ITINERARYAMAZON & INCA ADVENTUREDay 1: Wednesday 20 April LimaMeals included: 1 Dinner Accommodation: Antigua Mira Flores or Similar, LimaActivities:n On arrival at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International

Airport we will be transferred to our hotel in the well-known coastal suburb of Miraflores.

n This evening we will have a welcome dinner with our leader and Tour Host.

Day 2-3: Thursday 21–Friday 22 April LimaMeals included: 2 breakfastsAccommodation: Antigua Mira Flores or Similar, LimaActivities:n On day 2 and 3 we will tour Lima. Founded in

1535 by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, it was from Lima that all Spanish territories in South America were governed. Few cities at that time could rival Lima’s power, wealth and opulence. However its glory days ended in 1746 when the city was virtually destroyed by an earthquake. Many of the colonial buildings were rebuilt and we will get a first-hand look at several of them on the tour. The striking Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas), flanked by some of the most important buildings in town such as the cathedral, the huge Government Palace and the Archbishop’s Palace, constitutes the heart of the city. Highlights include:

n San Francisco Monastery, with its catacombs containing some 70,000 human remains.

n The Central market where we will take a walking tour. The market has a huge variety of fresh produce on offer including fruits, vegetables and even Guinea pigs. We will have the opportunity to try some local Peruvian fruits and street food.

n China town which is close to the Market.

n The tour will finish in Lima main square, with the option to go for dinner downtown or back to Miraflores.

Spare time provides the perfect opportunity to wander around Miraflores, visiting Parque del Amor (Love’s Park) where you can enjoy a view across Lima’s beaches, or catching a taxi to visit the Gold Museum or the Larco Museum, which is renowned for its ancient pottery collection. You may also want to visit the impressive National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History of Peru, which is home to a wonderful collection of cultural exhibits tracing the history, arts and accomplishments of the people of Peru, ranging from the original inhabitants of the land through to the Inca Empire and the Spanish conquerors. Our guide will provide advice on the easiest way to get around.

n There are a number of restaurants and cafes to choose from for dinner. Lima has some of the most superb cuisine in South America and is especially renowned for its exceptional seafood. During our time here, you may wish to try ceviche, Peru’s national dish, which is raw fish marinated in lime juice and often served with hot peppers. This culinary delight is a must for all seafood lovers! Once again, our guide will have plenty of ideas.

Day 4-5: Saturday 23–Sunday 24 April Puerto Maldonado - Amazon JungleMeals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinnersAccommodation: Posada Amazonas lodge/ Refugio Lodge or similar, Puerto MaldonadoActivities:n Fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado (approx 2 hrs).

n Upon arrival, the lodge staff will take us to their office in town where we’ll leave most of our luggage in a safe storage and continue travelling with a small pack with just the necessary items for our next two nights in the jungle. We then take a motorized canoe up river to our jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area.

n Head into the jungle with our local, multilingual guides and encounter magnificent fauna and flora in their natural habitat. We may spot everything from macaws and monkeys to peccary, jabirus, otters and thousands of butterflies. The guides can also teach us about the medicinal properties and practical uses of the plants.

n After exploring the wilds, it’s time to jump back in the canoe and return to Puerto Maldonado.

n The lodge is eco-friendly and combines low-impact architecture with traditional native style. Rooms are simple, but comfortable with flush toilets (en suite), showers (cold water only), mosquito nets and kerosene lamps for light.

Day 6: Monday 25 April CuscoMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Eco Inn hotel or similarActivities:Today we travel back to Puerto Maldonado before flying to Cuzco. The city itself is the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Incas for two centuries before the Spanish built their first capital here. Today Cusco is a fascinating combination of both cultures. Inca-built walls line the central streets and many of the elegant colonial buildings are built on or around Inca foundations. This is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend and is a perfect base for explorations into the Inca world or to enjoy a range of outdoor activities.

Our leader will take us on a walking tour including a visit to the Coca Musuem - where we can learn more about this infamous plant which has been an essential part of life in the Andes for centuries - and the local San Pedro market.

Day 7: Tuesday 26 April CuscoMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Eco Inn hotel or similarActivities:Today is a free day. If you are interested in visiting the many museums of Cusco please be aware that you have the Boleto Turistico (Tourism Ticket) included, just ask our tour leader about this. This ticket also covers surrounding archaeological sites, for example Q’enqo, Pica Pakara, Pisac and Ollantaytambo. The Contemporary Art Museum, Regional History Museum and Qosqo Native Art Museum can only be accessed with a Boleto Turistico.

For lunch or mid-morning coffee and cake head to Yanapay restaurant at 415 Ruinas St. This restaurant uses all its profits to support children in Cuzco through Aldea Yanapay and its social projects. For more info on Aldea Yanapay visit: www.yanapay.facipub.com

P E R U & B O L I V I A

Day 8: Wednesday 27 April Sacred Valley/OllantaytamboMeals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunchAccommodation: Pakaritampu hotel or similarActivities:

Travel by private bus through the Sacred Valley, known as Wilcamayo by the Incas. The lush, fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces carved high into the valley walls.

At the Sacred Valley we will visit the stone fortress of Sacsayhuaman where massive stone blocks that form the walls of this site give us an awesome picture of how highly developed Inca engineering was. Looking over the city from its hilltop position, the fortress is built out of massive stone blocks and is the ultimate example of the Inca’s military strength.

We will visit a local community en route to Ollantaytambo – the town of Ollantaytambo was built over an ancient Inca town, a magnificent example of Inca urban planning. This is one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish.

Ollantaytambo’s archaeological site is located to the east of the Plaza de Armas. The upper terraces of this site offer great photo opportunities of the squared grid town below.

Day 9: Thursday 28 April Aguas CalientesMeals included: 1 breakfast, 1 dinnerAccommodation: Casa Andina Classic Hotel or similar, Aguas CalientesActivities:

Nestled in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu, our destination today will be Aguas Calientas. We will travel by train for 90 minutes through the winding Urubamba Valley to reach town, where we can spend some free time exploring the natural hot springs after which the town was named.

Day 10: Friday 29 April Machu PicchuMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Eco Inn hotel, or similar, CuzcoActivities:n Take a very early (5:30am) bus along the winding

road to Machu Picchu (approx. 30 minutes) where we will be joined by a guide who will take us through the ruins. Looking at Machu Picchu for the first time, as it sits against a backdrop of forested mountains, is a truly breathtaking experience. No matter how many photos we’ve seen, it is hard to prepare for its awesome beauty.

n MACHU PICCHU: While it’s thought Machu Picchu was built around 1440 as a country retreat for Incan nobility, there is evidence this had been a sacred Incan site for much longer. Another school of thought is that this was an astronomical observatory. There’s plenty of time for us to decide for ourselves as we wander around the many temples, palaces and living quarters. We will have a guided visit (approx 1.5-2 hrs) with plenty of free time afterwards. After taking advantage of the seemingly endless photo opportunities, it’s time to return to Cuzco for a well deserved shower and a pisco sour.

n WAYNA PICCHU: Due to internal safety policy our leaders are specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting with booking this dangerous climbing activity.

Day 11: Saturday 30 April CuzcoMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Eco Inn hotel, or similar, CuzcoActivities:

Today will be free, an excellent opportunity to explore Cuzco. Our included “full boleto turistico” will provide access to the archaeological sites of Qenqo and Tambomachay, in the outskirts of Cuzco.

Day 12: Sunday 1 May Cuzco–PunoMeals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunchAccommodation: Taypikala hotel or similar, PunoActivities:

We travel by bus to Puno (this is a full day journey)

This scheduled tourist service will take us on good roads through some spectacular mountain scenery and we will stop at several sites along the way, including Inca adobe ruins.

Lunch will be included on a stop in the small town of Sicuani. Along the way we will also make a short roadside stop at La Raya, which at 4335 metres is the highest point on our journey. We will also drive through the large sprawling town of Juliaca on our way to Puno, which is a colourful and lively place renowned for its traditional street dancing.

Day 13: Monday 2 May Lake TiticacaMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Taypikala hotel or similar, PunoActivities:

Located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, Puno is a melting pot of Aymara and Quechuan Indian culture and traditional Andean customs are still strongly represented here. The town is known as the folklore capital of Peru and is famous for its traditional dances. Many festivals are celebrated here, so if we’re lucky our visit might coincide with one of the colourful evening parades, when the streets fill with costumed dancers and musicians.

Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, sitting at 3,820 m above sea level. From the shoreline, the water stretches out almost as far as the eye can see, its expanses just waiting to be explored.

Take a tour of the lake by slow motor boat, stopping to visit the Uros floating islands. The Uros originally built their islands to isolate themselves from rival tribes. The islands are built from many layers of totora reeds that grow in the shallows of the lake. As the reeds closest to the water begin to rot, more layers are added on top. These reeds are used for making everything on the islands, including the boats which can last up to 12 months.

AMAZON & INCA ADVENTURE 16 DAY SOLOS TOUR – APRIL 2016

Day 14: Tuesday 3 May Puno- La PazMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Rosario Hotel or similarActivities:

Travel by minivan to Desaguadero, where we’ll cross the border into Bolivia. The first stop is the Peruvian migration office where we’ll be asked to leave the bus and proceed through Peruvian migration. We then walk via a bridge to the Bolivian side, submit our passport at the Bolivian migration office and reboard the bus, which will continue to La Paz. About 30 minutes after crossing the border there’s another stop where the army will again check our documents. Bolivia is one to two hours ahead of Peru.

On our way to La Paz, we will stop at Tiwanaku for a guided visit.

Tiwanaku archaeological site was where the Incas learned about building systems and agricultural practices.

This was the base of a great civilisation that began around 500 BC before mysteriously ‘disappearing’ around 1200 AD. It is believed that the ceremonial complex dates back to the 8th century AD and was once at the centre of a powerful and self-sustaining empire based in the southern Central Andes. The sprawling ruins comprise temples, courtyards, terraced pyramids, monolithic stone statues and gateways. The most famous structure is the Puerta del Sol (Gateway of the Sun).

From the ruins it is less than a two-hour drive to La Paz, where we’ll spend the night. We will enjoy spectacular views of the city on our approach, due to its unique location in the middle of a vast volcanic crater that resembles a bowl.

Day 15: Wednesday 4 May La PazMeals included: 1 breakfastAccommodation: Rosario Hotel or similarAt around 3,600 metres, La Paz feels like the top of the world. It’s not far from it and vies with Tibet for the title of highest capital in the world.

Although Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia, La Paz is the centre of commerce, finance and industry. Despite the abundance of colonial architecture, La Paz’s indigenous roots run deep, and the atmosphere in the market-filled streets is both modern and traditional.

Today is free to explore the vibrant city and markets of La Paz.

Day 16: Thursday 5 May La PazMeals included: 1 breakfastActivities:n Trip ends this morning after breakfast in La Paz.

n If you are travelling on with us to experience Ecuador and the amazing Galapagos, your flight to Quito will depart La Paz at 8am.

n Alternately, we can organise your accommodation if you wish to extend your stay in La Paz or onwards travel around South America.

8 DAY SOLOS TOUR – MAY 2016GALAPAGOS EXTENSION

BIENVENIDOS! WELCOME TO ECUADORGALAPAGOS EXTENSIONDay 1: Thursday 5 May QuitoAccommodation: Cafe Cultura Hotel or similar

Our adventure starts with an arrival transfer at Quito airport. You can arrive at any time as there are no activities planned until we meet for a tour briefing at 6:30pm. We’ll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details ready.

Sitting at an altitude of 2,850m under the gaze of Volcán Pichincha, Quito is one of the most attractive cities in South America.

Long and incredibly thin, the city stretches along a central valley formed by the east and west ranges of the Andes. Although compact, Quito’s Old Town is full of historic buildings - there are more than 30 churches to explore, not to mention the fascinating museums.

As this trip spends very little time in Quito, we recommend you spend a few extra days after your trip to experience all the city has to offer. You may even wish to explore further beyond the city and visit Otavalo, Cotopaxi, the Cloud Forest or the Equatorial Monument. Please ask our local representative for more details.

Quito is a cultured city with a wonderous Old Town, a dynamic nightlife and atmospheric streets showcasing Ecuadorian life in all its splendour.

La Compania de Jesus is considered by many the most beautiful in the Americas; it’s certainly one of the most ornate. It’s claimed that seven tonnes of gold leaf cover the interior whilst the exterior is decorated with statues, busts, sculpted heads and a jungle of carved leaves.

Take a walk down the famous Calle La Ronda, Quito’s oldest street. La Ronda is a peek into the colonial past of the city. This quaint street offers the city’s best in one place.

Included Activities:n Complimentary airport arrival transfer

Optional Activities:n Compania de Jesus - US$4

n La Ronda - Free

n Ballet Folklorico Ecuatoriano de Jacchigua - US$40

Day 2: Friday 6 May Isabela IslandMeals: 1 Breakfast, 1 DinnerAccommodation: Casa Marita Hotel or similar

Early in the morning we are transferred to Quito airport for our flight to Santa Cruz Island. The Galapagos National Institute has introduced a Transit Control Card. This card has a cost of US$20 and it must be purchased by every person travelling to the Galapagos Islands after checking in at Quito airport.

Upon arrival we need to go through immigration and pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of US$100 in cash (small bills please).

We land at about midday and transfer from the airport to the port of Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) for lunch (not included).

After lunch we travel by private speed boat for approx. 2.5-3 hours to Isabella Island. Between the months of June and September the ocean can be rough making this boat trip bumpy (or very bumpy). If you plan to take seasickness medications, this will be a good time.

Upon arrival at Isabela Island we need to pay the US$5 dock fee collected by the Galapagos National Park. As per all the random and mandatory fees charged by the Galapagos National Park, these fees can change without notice.

After a brief rest at the hotel, we head to Flamingo Lagoon, the largest coastal lagoon found in the Galapagos and one of the main reproductive sites for the grand majority of flamingos. If you are up for a walk, ask your tour leader to point you in the direction of a walking track that takes you back to town.

Included Activities:n Walking tour

Day 3: Saturday 7 May Isabela IslandMeals: 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 DInnerAccommodation: Casa Marita Hotel or similar

On day 3 after breakfast, we visit the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, followed by lunch in a restaurant.

In the afternoon we travel by speedboat to Tintoreras Island - a deep crevice with clear and calm waters frequented by Tintoreras (white-tip sharks) as well as penguins, sea lions and marine iguanas. Enjoy swimming, snorkeling or just relaxing before returning to our hotel. The snorkelling site will be chosen depending on the swimming and snorkeling ability of members of the group.

Included Activities:n Isla Tintoreras

n Isla Isabela - Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre

Day 4: Sunday 8 May Isabela IslandMeals: 1 BreakfastAccommodation: Casa Marita Hotel or similar

Day 4 is free for us to take on different optional activities. Take a (long) walk or (easy) bike ride to the “Muro de las Lagrimas” (Wall of Tears). From 1946 to 1959, the Ecuadorian government designated Isabela Island a penal colony. Prisoners were obligated to build a wall with enormous blocks of lava. The arduous labour and harsh conditions in which the prisoners lived earned the site its name “Muro de las Lagrimas”.

Day 5: Monday 9 May Santa CruzMeals: 1 BreakfastAccommodation: Solymar Hotel or similar

Today, we take a private speedboat to Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) and are transferred to our hotel. We drop off our bags, grab cameras and head off to the Charles Darwin Research Station. The station’s visitor centre is an essential stop for anyone interested in the archipelago’s natural and human history, and keen to learn more about conservation efforts to preserve the unique ecosystems of the Galapagos. It also offers a great chance for close-up encounters with giant tortoises, and you can see many newborn

and young giant turtles - part of the breeding program to reintroduce them to their natural habitat.

After lunch we continue exploring Santa Cruz Island on a walk to Tortuga Bay, a picturesque beach located approximately 1hr walk (each way) from town - water and snacks are not available in Tortuga Bay so be prepared.

Included Activities:n Isla Santa Cruz - Charles Darwin Research Centre

Day 6: Tuesday 10 May Santa CruzMeals: 1 BreakfastAccommodation: Solymar Hotel or similarDay 6 is free for you to continue to explore Santa Cruz island. You can opt to take on a vehicle based tour to the highland and see the Giant Tortoises in their natural habitat.

We join our tour leader for a group dinner before returning to Quito tomorrow.

On day 7 we are transferred to the airport in time for our late morning flight back to Quito. We can expect to arrive at our hotel by the afternoon. We are free to relax and enjoy Quito at our leisure, before the farewell dinner (own expense).

Day 8: Thursday 12 May QuitoMeals: 1 BreakfastOn Day 8 there are no group activities planned for the last day of the trip and you can depart at any time. Hotel check out is normally at 10am.
