DAY 1 FLY TO GUATEMALA. Welcome to Guatemala City, the capital, known for its strong Mayan and Spanish colonist influences. Meet your NETC Tour Director and begin exploring.

DAY 2 ANTIGUA GUATEMALA. Step back in time with a visit to Antigua, declared by UNESCO as “Cultural Heritage of Humankind.” A full day of exploration begins with a visit to historic monuments, starting at the Main Plaza. Head to the village of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, famous for its textiles and handcrafts. Then continue to the Indigenous village of Santiago Zamora to learn about Maya- Kaqchiquel culture and enjoy a typical lunch prepared by local women artisans. This afternoon, opt to take a tour of a coffee farm and visit the Traditional Mayan Music Museum, Casa K’Ojom, at the Centro Cultural La Azotea.

DAY 3 PACAYA VOLCANO. In the morning, climb one of the 33 volcanoes in Guatemala, the active Pacaya Volcano. Enjoy views from the top and see where Lava Rivers have invaded the landscape. This afternoon, return to Antigua to create and enjoy traditional Guatemalan cuisine in Buen Provecho!

DAY 4 CHICHICASTENANGO MARKET- LAKE ATITLAN. Head to Chichicastenango to shop in the most colorful and picturesque market in Guatemala, where locals buy and sell fruits, vegetables, grain, animals, flowers, textiles and handicrafts. En route to Lake Atitlán, visit Santo Tomas Church, where the Maya- K’iche’ pray to their gods according to the old Maya traditions.

DAY 5 LAKE ATITLAN. One of the most beautiful lakes in the world awaits you, Lake Atitlán, formed by a caldera (collapsed volcanic cone). Hop aboard a boat to the village of San Juan La Laguna. Learn more about its cultural and artistic traditions when you interact with associations and ccooperatives from the local community.

DAY 6 SANTA CATARINA PALOPO-FLORES. Your Tour Director leads you through the village of Santa Catarina Palopó, well-known for the colorful (aqua-blue) costume worn by the locals. Visit with local students during your Guatemalan School. Return to Guatemala City to board a flight to Flores, Petén.

DAY 7 TIKAL NATIONAL PARK. Join a local guide for a tour of this majestic Mayan city, considered the largest and most monumental of all the sites discovered in the Mayan World. Wander around the most important plazas, complexes and temples while enjoying the tropical forest, nesting place to hundreds of exotic birds and home to a wide variety of wildlife. Fly back to Guatemala City (or stay one more night in Flores if you chose to extend your trip to Belize).

DAY 8 RETURN JOURNEY TO THE UNITED STATES.

DAY 8-10 BELIZE EXTENSION. Opt to extend your stay with two nights in San Ignacio, Belize. Enjoy a hike to one of Belize’s premier caves, Che Chem Ha Caves. Continue to Che Chem Ha Falls. This waterfall tumbles 100 feet in the jungle creating a refreshing swimming pool at the bottom. The next day visit the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Upon arrival, stop at Green Hills Butterfly Ranch for an introduction to the ecology of Belize in relation to butterfly diversity. Then drive to Barton Creek Caves. Glide through the remote underground water cave system of Xibalba “she-bal-ba” (Maya for Underworld) in your self-paddled canoe.

Belize ExtensionDAY 8-10: Extend your stay with two nights in San Ignacio, Belize.  Enjoy a

Antigua Spanish Language Study

DAY 1 — ANTIGUA Depart the USA on Sunday and arrive in Guatemala City. Transfer to Antigua and meet your host family. All the host families live within walking distance of the school and offer full room and board.

Private classes (one on one) for 6 hours daily at the oldest of the Spanish language schools in Antigua and the only school which teaches Spanish and also, various Mayan languages.

Students will have shared rooms. All meals will be taken with your host families, except your arrival day dinner which will be arranged at a restaurant.

DAY 2 — ANTIGUA Attend morning and early afternoon language class at the language school. Afterwards, enjoy a visit to Museo del Café. Overnight with host families.

DAY 3 — ANTIGUA Attend morning and early afternoon language class at the language school. In the afternoon you will visit a Macadamia Nut Farm and the village of San Antonio. Overnight with host families.

DAY 4 — ANTIGUA Attend morning and early afternoon language class at the language school. During afternoon class each teacher-student combination will do a walking tour of Antigua's colonial past. Overnight with host families.

DAY 5 — ANTIGUA Attend morning and early afternoon language class at the language school. The afternoon is free to explore the sites of Antigua. Overnight with host families.

DAY 6 — ANTIGUA Attend morning and early afternoon language class at the language school. Enjoy an afternoon visit to Ciudad Vieja, the site where the second capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala was founded. In 1541, it was destroyed by volcanic eruptions that engulfed the town. The original church was excavated intact. Overnight with host families.

DAY 7 — ANTIGUA Today there is a full day excursion to Chichicastenango and Panajachel. Chichicastenango, located at a higher elevation, is famous for unique indigenous religious ceremonies and the largest open-air market in Central America. Continue to Panajachel in the shores of the beautiful and scenic Lake Atitlan, which is dramatically surrounded by three volcanoes. Overnight with host families.

DAY 8 — DEPARTURE Transfer to the airport in Guatemala City for your flight back to the USA.
