Matt Lebrun The programming language used is trivialcompared to having a programmer's mindset. Thereforelogical/problem-solving skills is very important. In thecorporate world, you don't always have a say/choice as towhat language will be used but if you have grasped the basicsyou're well on your way to learning any programminglanguage. Anyhow, if you don't know their language of choicethey'll train you but the classroom/laboratory is the bestplace to instill a programmer's mindset.

Matt Lebrun I've also learned that people skills is evenmore important than technical skills. 85% of your success inbusiness will be affected by this and only 15% by yourtechnical prowess. You'll meet managers/team leadersinferior to your technical skills but the reason they're in thatposition is because they know how to manage people. Thepeople at the top are not necessarily the best at what they dobut they're the best at managing people who are the best atwhat they do. Likewise, our Theology and Psychology classesare very much appreciated in this regard – Technology with aSoul remember?

Matt Lebrun Most of the time students think of the twosubjects mentioned above as a bore and waste, but onceyou're faced with the critical, harsh, demanding, brutal,energy-sucking reality of the corporate world or just lifeoutside the academe you'll value the lessons learned fromthose subjects. The corporate pay thousands just to give theiremployees the lessons we are already learning from thosesubjects. So please value them. Take notes and keep themwith you especially once you step out of school.

13 hours ago · Like

Matt Lebrun Back to our Elective subjects. Since the choiceof path to take after an IT student graduates is vast, could bepossible that the student can have a choice of elective totake? For example if the student wishes to take theNetworking side of IT then would have a choice of having anelective that would teach him more advanced topics in thatfield (Network security and the like). Or if its on thedevelopment/software engineering side the more advancedtopics in this regard can be taken.

Mark Ballesteros Try to integrate Search Engine Marketing(SEM) to the course itself. Since most of the things that arein the internet today can be based on Social Medias. I, for one neverthought that IT and Marketing can co-exists. I remembered that wetackled at IRM about web crawling, and if it is possible that you cango deeper to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEM. If your brand is Jolibee but you used meta tags related tomcdoin effect when anyone types in search engine 'mcdohamburgers' a jolibbe entry will still appear.

Alvin Boki Some suggestions also for students who areconsidering Software Engineering1. Do NOT take forgranted the lessons about SDLC. It is the lifeline ofthe software engineering line and you cannot just "code and deploy"your program without some proper planning on how you accomplishyour project.2. Do NOT limit yourself to the programming. Clients will also beconfident of your skills if you can configure servers, deployapplications, identify frameworks, etc. But of course you have theoption of being a specialist of your field3. I've seen cases na kahit sobrang dami ng magaling naprogrammers the project seems to go over the budget simply becauseof the technical designs. I can say for myself that the most crucial partof SDLC is the Planning and the Analysis dahil kapag jan pa lang tamaang pagkaka gawa hindi ka na mag kaka problem sa design up toimplementation.

To the students, I suggest you take your english subject seriously. You're going to benefit from it pag labas sa school. I was justwondering kung bakit wala kaming technical writing nung time namin. It would be such a great help.

Rodelio Barcenas Thanks for the input. Yes definitely thedirections of IT is moving towards the Cloud computing... Insome countries, they are downsizing the IT personnelrequirements.this is a trouble in the near future. There would be lesserrequirements for programmers, etc.

I agree to the idea of giving attention to the managing part ofit... The cloud system does not work on single computers only

thanks paolo on the input... it just confirmed my thoughtsabout it

I'mcurrently using varieties of open source CMS like Drupal,Joomla and Wordpress to provide website authoring and easemanagement of Contents in web.. PHP still is the most powerful webprogramming language but why not try introducing web frameworkslike Django(Python based). CSS3 and HTML...

Rodelio Barcenas Hi, thanks for the inputs... currently weare introducing PHP frameworks to the curriculum, MVC -Model View Controllers.CMS and other PHP based apps are doing it throughframeworks. PHP cake, Code Igniter...

Do you use frameworks...

Friday at 2:36pm · Like

Christian Jesus Cerillo I've tried using sir Code Igniter, much better than any frameworks available. Tapos inaral kodin Zend but I've find it difficult. Much better if theprogrammer must come up with his own version offramework. Important po kasi para mapabilis angprogramming.

Rodelio Barcenas I agree to that... Sir King too was havingproblems with Zend.. Sir Alvin introduced this to an Electivesubject, MVC Model View Controllers... enjoy sila...Siguro pa-train ko pa yung teacher regarding thistechnology... Thanks very much...

Aletheia Maclang Sir, yung paggawa po ng documents...From requirements gathering up to the maintenance of theproject. Na-experience ko po kasi sa work na mas mahirap gumawang system kapag hindi clear yung requirements ng client... andnasasayang yung time kapag pabago bago yung requirements lalo nakapag walang proof kung ano talaga yung napag-usapan ng bothparties.

I used to work using .NET pero ngayon more on VBA ang ginagamitko.Thursday at 11:16pm · Comment · Like · Flag

Rodelio Barcenas Thanks aleth for the inputs... yan ngatalaga ang problem, not the programming side...May ginawa kami sa SOENG413 lately na naging connectedsiya sa actual stakeholder. Maybe a real hands on typeactivity will help train students. Expand pa siguro....SOENG413 more....

Aletheia Maclang yeap... hirap din magturn over ng mgaprojects... lalo na kapag walang documents... kaya kapaginexplain sakin yung process, kailangan maintindihan ko siyakagad as a whole kasi po kapag hindi.. mammroblema naako kapag nagsupport ako ng system. :P

Tsaka sir, more problem solving sa programming... Not tomake them memorize the syntax, but to enhance theirproblem solving. Since na-practice ako sa school ngpagpprogram, I find it easier to develop a system kahitanong technology gamitin kasi na-practice na ako samag-analyze ng process tsaka kung pano siya ieexecute. :)

Giovanni Petrache mas mahirap gumawa ng system kapaghindi clear yung requirements ng client....- i regularly encounter this problem cause of languagebarrier(talking to a french project manager who doesn'tspeaks english that well). there are tickets assigned to methat has no specs, and there are also bugs needed to be fixbut no explanation why it is a bug. what i do is, keep askingquestions till i understand the requirement and document itand show it to him. we really cant rely on client in making thedocumentation so we have to do it on our own.

Aletheia Maclang @Iyoy: kaya nga.. hehehe.. :) dapatmaexercise yung pag-create nila ng process... hindi sila dapatmagrely sa syntax.. :P hehehe... mas mahalaga yungprocess flow. :P

Aletheia Maclang @Giovanni: I agree... usually I keep onsending e-mails to the client to confirm kung yun yungtalagang gusto nilang ipagawa.. kasi kapag nagpabago bagosila ng requirements, tapos wala kang document/proof namaipapakita na iba yung pinag-usapan niyo... lagot ka..hahha

Rodelio Barcenas Any inputs re ABAP?What is it? a database? SQL? or Other?

Friday at 2:38pm · Like

Rodelio Barcenas Medyo mahal ang SAP but I think thereis a work around... Meron nag punta dito from fast tracksolutions and gave me the framework of SAP. I think thereason why it will be harder for a grad to participate isbecause of the many jargons in business operations.

I'm planning to introduce thishttp://www.weberp.org/WeberpFeaturesThis can be adapted by accounting, finit and MIS

Carlo Arcilla I just wanted to note that maybe it wouldtremendously help the department if they will beretrofitting/reorganizing the curriculum based on the current trends. Most of us found ourselves in a middle of a jungle when we 1st set outto work.Thursday at 11:14pm · Comment · Like · Flag

Carlo Arcilla We are currently involved in SAP practice andbased on my experience so far, our curriculum was based onan idea that students should be well equipped on all aspectsof technology within the scopes of IT. But I believe thatmaybe being a sort of "jack of all trades" makes us "aces ofnone." so maybe a little focus or maybe having a major in aparticular technology can greatly benefit to the student'smastery of that practice.

Rodelio Barcenas OK. copy... our current free elective isnot really free elective... offering a large range topics canhelp students choose their specializations... what do youthink?

Thursday at 11:30pm · Like

Christian Tan | I agree with James. For me, the wholeLinux mania didn't help at all. We were made to believe thatwe have the "edge" if we know Linux. I believe thecurriculum should focus more on what's REALLY out there inthe industry the likes of SAP, Oracle, Cisco -> knowing thesesystems will really give you a headstart in playing the game.

Christian Tan | One more thing, since it is I.T., we shouldgive more focus in programming since that's what we'reexpected to do when employers learn that we graduatedfrom that degree. Put the other subjects aside or atleast givelittle emphasis on them. C, Java, PHP - the students need todevelop the art of analysis, logical thinking and programming.Just my 2 cents.

Technologyshould just be the icing in the cake. This would mean teachers handling subjects in the loweryears should have a real good curriculum...Enjoy ako dito sa inputs ninyo... mababasa naman nila ito....thanks

Thursday at 11:41pm · Like

Christian Tan | Exactly Sir. Analysis and Logical thinkingare the keys. Programming language won't matter once youmaster the keys. Which brings me to my point, spend moretime on programming not on arts, psychology et al. And whatreally gave me a problem back then in college wasremembering the lessons discussed - I hope mabago yungschedule. Make the major subjects (programming) run 3x aweek. Atleast 2 hours a day. Hasahin sila ng mabuti. Lunurinsila sa programming. It is true that practice makes perfect.

More lab time. More exercises. Just to share, I learnedprogramming by using pen and paper only. Mahirap at firstpero when I switched into doing it on the computer, piece ofcake.

And please, NO MORE TAKE HOME QUIZZES/EXAMS.

Kudos to you Sir and the whole IT Department. I wish I wasable to experience Oracle and Cisco din. Mabenta saemployer kasi when they see those in your resume.
